The Coffee Table Styling Formula You Should Know

As MKR taught us before, styling a beautiful coffee table is really quite simple.  She summed it up with a fool-proof coffee table styling formula: Books + Flowers + Trays + Objects + Depth.

No matter the size or shape of your coffee table, the surface is a wonderful opportunity to showcase items as part of a collection and reflection of you and your life.  While I know a coffee table can seem daunting the best way to start tackling the table is by thinking of your coffee table in quadrants; designing each quadrant separately, but making sure they fit with the big picture, or rather the coffee table as a whole.

First, coffee table books are an obvious must.  They offer great conversational pieces, offering a hint of personality of the home owner.  Coffee table books serve as the perfect landing for smaller, decorative objects (like the animal magnifying glass), and also play into the depth (part of our fool-proof coffee table styling formula) of the coffee table by adding varying heights.

The next piece of the puzzle is a no-brainer, flowers.  Flowers add life to any space, and who could deny how beautiful freshly cut blooms are?  Of course, fresh flowers on a weekly basis can start to get expensive, so another great option is a small plant like a topiary, succulent or cactus that’s easy to care for (see our list of our eight favorite, easy indoor house plants).  And while I never thought I would once say it, faux flowers have come a long way.

Decorative trays easily corral and organize smaller items so the surface doesn’t appear messy. As pictured above, MKR uses a faux python tray to house her collection of Japanese calligraphy brushes (which also add strong pops of color).  Trays are great especially for smaller items such as candles, matchboxes, coasters, or any other small and decorative trinkets. Lastly, add a few larger decorative objects such as these extra large dominos and voila a perfectly styled coffee table!  Cheers, Kat

DIY Fabric Covered Bulletin Boards Are an Easy, Must-Have in any office space

What’s a truly functional office without its bulletin boards?  I’ve always had a love affair with bulletin boards, especially when they’re covered in a beautiful fabric and pinned full of everything you need to inspire; inspiration seems to literally just ooze off of them!  DIY fabric covered bulletin boards are an effortless way to edit and organize ideas, inspiring pages torn out from magazines, paint and fabric swatches…you name it.  And in turn, they end up looking as beautiful as they are helpful.

I knew I wanted to have these bulletin boards front and center in the new WOM office, serving as a nice focal point behind the “sitting area.” I settled on three large boards, and I’ve designated them as following: one for current projects, one to keep track of our editorial calendar and ideas (because I’ve always preferred literally writing things down and mapping them out), and the other to serve as an inspiration mood board.  The boards are covered in a lovely, warm neutral fabric (similar HERE), which was just a match made in heaven for our Taylor Burke Home Settee and Lacefield pillows. The brass “library” light fixtures from Barbara Cosgrove serve as the “jewelry” for this vignette; offering not only practical lighting over a large expanse of wall, but also anchoring the boards for the eye.

These DIY fabric covered bulletin boards make for an incredibly easy project; simply pull your favorite fabric taut over the boards, stapling it securely in the back. I’ve also used my ever-popular Thibaut Tanzania wallpaper in the past (get the easy DIY bulletin board tutorial here), and absolutely adored the finished product.  Tell me friends, what’s your favorite approach to the bulletin board?  Truly, MKR

P.S. Our final reveal goes live NEXT WEEK! Be sure to tune in as we share the entire space, designed in six short, crazy weeks thanks to The One Room Challenge.  xo

How to Give Yourself a Bedroom Refresh

Creating an Inviting Retreat is Actually Quite Simple
Filed Under > Living

MKR proved to us last year that one of the quickest ways to give your bedroom a refresh is actually an easy update; it starts your bedding.  She shared that her bedroom is truly her happy place, and I can’t help but think of my bedroom as mine. And since now it’s harder than ever to get out of bed in the morning, what better time than now to bring this bedroom refresh post back out of the archives to share again.

I honestly get excited to get ready for bed, so you won’t be surprised to learn that I’m such a sucker for good bedding. It’s the first thing you feel when you climb into bed every night, and it’s one of the most intimate details of your daily life. My rationale: I spend a lot of my life sleeping or in bed, so why skimp on making it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible?

I don’t really think you can go wrong with bedding if you pay attention to the quality of the fabric and simply enjoy its feel.  MKR keeps it simple in her bedroom with classic grey bedding from Crane & Canopy as pictured above. I, too, like to keep things simple, though I usually always stick with crisp white sheets. There’s just something so clean and fresh about an all-white bed!  My favorite part about simple bedding: it’s classic.  Accenting the simple bedding then is easy with a cozy throw and tons of throw pillows

Tell me, do you stick with simple bedding at home?  Are you particular on thread count when finding the perfect bedding? Do you have a favorite brand you’ve used for years and that I need to know about?  Cheers, Kat

P.S. If you’re not asking yourself “why leave?” in the morning, you’re doing it wrong. Check out these picks to make it the inviting retreat it can be.  xo
