Waiting on Martha The One Room Challenge 2016 mood board

And so it begins, friends.  The One Room Challenge 2016.  I didn’t even think twice when Linda at Calling It Home tapped us for our third ORC.  Of course we’ll take part in this fabulously fun, high energy interior design project… it’s been a HUGE highlight for the team in both 2014 and 2015.  The challenge introduces us to new friends, connects us with some of our favorite fellow bloggers, and it’s always the perfect kick in the butt to get going (or rather finish) a design project.

As you’ll probably remember, stress usually runs at an all-time high as we take you through a full room design at record speed (well, for me at least!)…in just six weeks.  SIX weeks!!!  Think delays in product shipments, a hold-up at the upholsterers, a problem with assembly…let’s just say that it can turn into some of the fastest six weeks of our lives.  But this year, with two years under my belt, I’m thrilled to tackle what I know will be our best One Room Challenge yet: our stunning WOM office space in ADAC, located in the heart of Atlanta.

So what can you expect?  Many of you know by now that I never shy from bold, dramatic decor (hello, bright gallery wall + funky loft!).  But I think you’ll be surprised in the One Room Challenge 2016 I’m welcoming a calmer, softer palette, and really relying on textured fabrics, rugs, and a mix of modern and vintage furniture to make the room.  I’m even stepping outside my color comfort zone and keeping the walls white, which is something I’ve never done before!!  While timing is always a hurdle, this go-around, my true challenge is making the space both beautiful and functional for not only myself, but my growing team.  The space is large; so I’ll try to accomplish this by creating dedicated work and live spaces and a handful of varying vignettes.

My mood board is a little sneak peek of what’s to come, but make sure you’re following along on Instagram and Snapchat (usernamer waitingonmartha) to get plenty of behind-the-scenes access.  And if this is your first introduction to the One Room Challenge, I suggest taking a stroll down memory lane as House Beautiful shares some of its favorite One Room Challenge reveals.  So ,are we ready?!  I know I am, and I have a feeling it’s going to be one of the most satisfying design projects I work on all year.  Truly, MKR

Deciding on the Design Corner Stones for My New Living Room

Blue & White Living Room, 2017 One Room Challenge, Waiting On Martha

If you missed the exciting news last week, or are new here to WOM—welcome!— I’m dishing some design details on my living room today as part of the 2017 One Room Challenge.

The beloved ORC is a high energy 6-week design project with fellow bloggers/designers around the web, and it’s one of my favorite ways to kick my butt into gear to redo spaces that need some attention and a little TLC.

And before you say it; I know the room pictured is already beautiful.  I LOVE this room!  But this photo was taken three years ago.  So you can imagine that the space doesn’t look entirely like it once did.  It’s the most lived-in, most highly trafficked rooms in our home, one been torn apart for many a movie night and photo shoot – I shoot all of my food photo shoots in the living room.  Not to mention, Addison, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has completely destroyed my beautiful Lacefield pillows by using every single one of them as a bed.

But back to the living room redesign.  In tackling this space I face a few key challenges I needed to meet head on from the get go.  First, I don’t have a formal living room. Meaning this room is it.  So the room has to be beautiful yet functional.

Second, the layout is funky.  It’s directly connected to my kitchen and dining nook in an open floor plan, and proves to be a bit limiting when coming up with my big design dreams.  Due to its size and shape it simply HAS to have a sectional in it, but sectionals are large and tend to suck up the entire room.  Especially a room this size.

Which brings me to my third challenge.  I need to find accent pieces, think side tables, bar carts, and additional seating, that can easily be brought in and out of the space when needed.

Luckily, this isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to the space and after hours of pouring over and testing out the cornerstones pieces of the room I think I’ve finally settled on a design and can get moving.

Below—BlogLovin’ friends be sure to click into the post to see the full detailed list!—I’m sharing those five design elements that I am leaning on to pull together the room and truly act as “anchors” for the design. Truly, MKR

The Ideal Sectional Sofa

So sectionals are hard.  I think the problem is that they’re either super masculine-leather-and-oversized, they’re very formal, or they’re one of those stiff, uncomfortable ones.

When I set my eyes on this L-shaped sectional by Bassett, I knew instantly that it was the perfect piece for our space.  It’s just modern enough; the envelope shape of the cushions along with the more traditional base is simply gorgeous.

Besides the fact that it’s going to be incredibly comfortable and basically a cloud for our at-home movie nights, it’s also really easy to move around and adjust.  Seriously…you can move around the pieces of the sectional as you can see the video here.

I’ll be talking alllllll about the selection process of a sectional sofa later, but until then I’ll be hanging tight until it gets delivered.  With furniture like this, you always get a little nervous about timing.  So that’s why I knew I needed to get this baby ordered ASAP.

A Rug to Ground to the Room

A rug is obviously functional, but it’s also the perfect way to infuse that hint of modern, that pop of color or that vintage detail.  It’s how I like to add personality or feeling into the room.  And when done right, it grounds the entire design.

I’ve seen this rug by Karastan, what I like to call an Antelope Rug, in various designed spaces.  I’ve always, always loved it as a stair runner.  I’m especially drawn to it for this space because it will hold up well in such a high traffic area.

I’m also a big mixer of patterns and prints.  Very much like my Thibault wallpaper as seen in my home office, the print is really just a pretty neutral that adds interest. It’s one of my favorite statement pieces for this space!

P.S. I’m so over rug pads in general.  I’m officially converting to rug tape to secure a large piece like this one.

Texture to Add a “Wow” Factor

I knew I wanted to incorporate tons of texture to the room.  Texture’s just my thing.  And in my opinion, fabric is one of the most fun things to pick out.

But once you settle on a design, you need to remember that it all takes time to upholster and reupholster furniture, and create custom drapery.  It can take up to 6 weeks for even the simple projects.  And just because it seems simple to you, that doesn’t mean it will be a quick turnaround if your upholsterer is busy.  A good rule of thumb?  Always allow for at least 10 days cushion for anything custom (drapery and upholstery), or you may get slammed with a hefty rush fee.

As for my status, well I’m really pushing it right now because I first need to finalize the sectional and the rug – the two biggest pieces of the design – before moving forward with any of my fabric orders.

I do know that I want to use the same grasscloth wallpaper from Bradley that I used in our shoppe in Atlanta.

I’m also debating between a couple of Stroheim fabrics, along with a fun trim for the drapery.  And yes, I’ve decided that I will be keeping the bamboo window treatments.

When we do share more about the new drapery in upcoming weeks, I’ll go into detail about measurements and rules of thumb when doing this at home.  I’ve found that it can be a bit confusing!

I’m also going to be recovering the x-bench stools as seen in the photo above with another Stroheim fabric that will complement the rest of the room.

Functional Pieces

As I mentioned above, my living room is THE room in my home.  I don’t have a formal living room or a formal dining room.  It’s attached to the kitchen and dining nook in an open floor plan.  That being said, I always need to consider functionality for the pieces in the space.

So here’s what I’m on the hunt for: a large surface to serve as a coffee table that also stores and displays accents and necessities, baskets for blankets, a side table and/or foot stools, etc.

I’ve already scored this beautiful Bassett Mirror bar cart.  Its unique silhouette and easy mobility make it a truly versatile addition to the room that I’ll be thrilled to put to use.

Because the sectional is such a large piece, and because my living room is a limited space for all of this living, all of these pieces need to be small enough to be placed, and used, throughout the room.

Lighting as the “Jewelry” of the Room

I absolutely love custom lighting and fixtures in a space.  I’ve always considered them to be the “jewelry” on the room because they are the icing on the cake when the design all comes together.  Really, really pumped about the chandy I’ve settled on.

I’m really lucky with this space when considering what piece to invest in because I don’t need to worry how much light the chandelier puts out.  I have a ton of natural light and recessed, or can, lighting already in place.

I do however need to worry about my husband’s 80″ television. I can’t have the chandelier hanging low enough so that it blocks the view of the TV from the sofa.

The One Room Challenge 2016: Final Reveal

Friends, the day is here!  The Final Reveal of another One Room Challenge is always one of my favorite posts, showing the culmination and result of six insanely fast weeks of design and transformation.  This go-around, I set out to tackle the Waiting on Martha office in ADAC, a whopping 950+ square foot space to house my growing business and team

After creating my original mood board with warm neutrals and a wealth of textures, I aimed to make the space feel inspiring and welcoming, but faced the challenge of pulling together such a large space. My solution, then, was to break down the large space into several smaller vignettes—or moments, as I like to call them.  The result was an office perfectly designed for collaborating, #GSD’ing and visiting with clients and guests.

To start, the entryway effortlessly welcomes you with styling details fit for an entryway found at home. Everything I used in this vignette is both beautiful AND practical…its mirror, console table, custom stools and statement lamp all serve a purpose by the door and set the stage for the rest of the design.

Compared to past desks you may have seen of mine this desk area is uber clean and very work-friendly with plenty of space to actually work!  My modern, clean, and large white desk with our amazing light box (with every changing quotes that resonate deeply) sells this vignette as a strong focal point, anchoring the room and is probably everyone’s favorite part of the space.

In the back corner of the room, I wanted a place for a conference table for team meetings and team meals, but not your typical, boring conference table.  So instead I chose a vintage 1920’s Parisian wedding table to give warmth to the meeting space, (story goes, for outdoor weddings families simply nailed together found boards to create these simple, yet stunning tables, similar here). The Society Social accent chairs upholstered in Lacefield fabric flank the table for a punch of blue & white (you know it’s my fave), while simple, modern shell chairs fill the rest of the table. Beneath our feet you’ll find my favorite rug combo; a large jute layered with a faux white cowhide rug.  And how could I forget about my new giant print, from Minted?!  The photograph captures the juxtaposition between bold and minimalist to a T, and its pretty copper frame compliments the room perfectly.

Next, our DIY fabric covered bulletin boards with their brass “library” light fixtures ended up serving as great anchors to the most expansive wall and the perfect backdrop to our sitting room. I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy any reason to sit in our “sitting room” because of how gorgeous this vignette turned out…Our Taylor Burke Home Settee with Lacefield pillows and West Elm velour metal armchairs in blush (a similar style in more muted colors is available here), our white side table, Gregg Park coffee table, and a MAJOR vintage rug from Bellwether (phew, that’s quite a list). Any “sitting room” wouldn’t be finished in my book without a bar cart, and this simple gold bar cart offers just the right amount of surface for all of our refreshments mid-meeting.

Opposite our bulletin boards is another massive wall which I lined  with two cube shelving units and my ever-growing collection of cookbooks and design books.  When styling the bookshelves to achieve the ultimate #shelfie, I ended up flipping the books around so their spines didn’t show.  As you know, I hoped to achieve a softer, calmer look to this space and as I was filling the shelves, the colors and titles ended up looking busy and a bit garish.  A quick solution was to turn the books around, and arrange them by category (so I still know where to find them!).

Because our job isn’t your typical 9-5’er, our office tends to be a revolving door, which means no one really “calls dibs” on any specific surface.  That being said, I knew we needed to designate an actual work space before we all ended up on the floor with bean bag chairs (not that I really hate bean bag chairs).  Therefore, I kept it simple by combining two Ikea desks, a couple of killer Mac screens with laptop plug-ins, all tied together with a simple yet statement making Taylor Burke pendant and a piece of art from Hayley Mitchell that speaks for itself.  AH-MAH-ZING!

Lastly, while everything shown in the office is beautiful to look at, the office needed a practical storage solution to keep things organized (and fuel our coffee addiction, duh). Enter my handy cabinet and simple wall shelving from Lowe’s. I turned Allen + Roth closet organization units topped with Allen + Roth baskets into a refreshment station and storage closet stowing our office printer, modem, phone, and all that necessary jazz.  A sheepskin runner from Lulu & Georgia finishes off the area and adds that bit of soft touch to what could be a colder space. FYI I’ll be doing an additional post in a week or two sharing how this area came together with plenty of organizational tips to boot so stay tuned for that.

Whew!  That was a mouthful and it was one heck of a six weeks, but I couldn’t be more thrilled with the end result for the new Waiting on Martha team office thanks to The One Room Challenge!  A huge thanks to Linda, House Beautiful, all of the incredibly generous sponsors and Rustic White for capturing the space to share with you all today.  Be sure to check out the other participants’ final reveals in the links below, and I’d love to hear what you all think of the design in the comments!  Truly, MKR
