Well seeing as how Old Man Winter has finally decided to join us here in the A, I’m doing whatever I can to stay warm.  But with the cold temps, there’s no reason to sacrifice style that is both comfortable and put together, which for me means piling on the layers. . And of course, you know I’ve been dying to rock my penny loafers (which are on MAJOR sale).

Pairing layers, especially those of different fits and styles can be tricky.  When working in layers it’s important to mix in different fits (ie. fitted and loose, oversized and tight), rather than keep it all in the same family.  Doing so gives your outfit shape, and looks put together—rather than sloppy—which can sometimes happen when you start layering. You don’t want to be swimming in a pair of wide-leg flares with a bulky sweater, or looking like one big marshmallow puff in an oversized coat.

An overcoat this time of year is a must (duh), I especially love this one because of its subtle pattern and light weight. I add warmth to this outfit with a super-soft knit vest over my tried-and-true striped button down blouse.  And since the vest is oversized and roomy, a pair of sharp, tailored black pants (my favorite have always been J.Crew’s Minnie Pant!) to keep the outfit fitted and flattering.  I give the look a bit of boyish charm with bordeaux-colored penny loafers.  This pair is a favorite because it’s soft buttery leather that completely forms to your foot not to mention they’re on MAJOR sale.  In fact, pretty much everything I’m wearing is on big time SALE (penny loafers, vest, coat, necklace, sunnies).  I wore the penny loafers ALL day and had absolutely no trouble, no blisters, no pain.  Score!  Lastly, because my look is pretty tried and true tomboy I added that bit of feminine edge by layering on some sparkly necklaces.  Who says you can’t wear loads of diamonds (faux diamonds that is) to work!?   Truly, MKR

7 Beauty Products We’re Currently Geeking Out About

From Snail BB Cream to Aztec Clay Masks and Facial Oils, Our Current Beauty Buys Worth Raving About
Filed Under > Beauty & Tutorials

I’ll be the first to tell you that it’s impossible to deny the lure of new beauty buys after reading about them every day. But if we’re being honest here, I’ll clarify that I don’t really fight it…I love love love discovering new beauty products.  So when I find a great new beauty buy (safe ingredients, good results and a reasonable price-point) from any of my go-to resources (Byrdie, Into the Gloss, Goop & The Coveteur), I want to sing it from the rooftop.  Luckily, MKR is just as eager to try a new beauty buy as me, so we’re always sharing our new finds and swapping recommendations.

This brings me to the five we’re currently geeking out over.  I call it “geeking out” because we tend to be big nerds when it comes to all-natural, creative ways to improve our beauty routine. I’m not above trying BB Cream that involves snail mucus, nor will I scoff at the idea of an ancient Aztec clay mask mixed with apple cider vinegar

Since so many of you loved our post on 8 natural beauty habits to adopt, you’ll appreciate these beauty finds we recently passed around the WOM team.  A big plus?  A lot of these beauty products are reasonably priced, which makes me love them even more.  Click through the slideshow above, let me know if you’ve also had luck with these buys, and of course, share any others you’ve found!  Cheers, Kat

P.S. I’ve included a few more beauty buys on the brain below (specifically by Herbivore BotanicalsRMS Beauty and Tata Harper) that I would love to hear your thoughts/recommendations.  xo

I don’t know about where you are, but here in the A, the weather has been all over the place! I’m talking temps in the 40’s one week to temps in the 70’s the next. So you’ll understand when I say that I’ve been stretched to find outfits lately that are suitable for anything Mother Nature has in mind that day.  My solution?  Layers.

My favorite cold-weather layers and accessories pair with an easy long-sleeved dress, and they’re all pieces you’ve seen here before: my tan shearling vest (seen here), my wool hat and of course my over-the-knee boots.

Speaking of the boots, there’s really nothing better than a great pair of over-the-knee boots.  These are perhaps the best pair of boots I’ve ever bought (you’ll recognize them here).  While giving me that extra layer of warmth, the boots always add a little intrigue to my outfit, too.  They feel sexy in a perfectly understated way, with or without tights.  I love wearing mine with dresses (as you may remember with a feminine boho dress here), but the boots also look killer with a pair of skinnies and even leggings.  Truly, MKR
