The Perfect Outfit To Get You From Cold to Warm Weather In Style

The best airport outfit: military jacket, panama hat, tassel necklaces

The best travel outfit
A comfortable and stylish travel outfit
The best travel bag and luggage

If you’re planning a getaway soon to escape the cold temps for warmer weather and sunny beaches (you lucky duck!), you’ll understand the struggle to decide on the best airport outfit.  MKR is touching down in LA for the week for the Grammy’s (be sure to follow her adventures on Snapchat—username WaitingonMartha—and Instagram), so we had to pull this helpful travel outfit post out of the archives.  Below, you’ll find four things to keep in mind when deciding on the best airport outfit.

No. 1: Think layers…a lot of them.  While layers are always a good idea to stay comfortable in-flight, it’s especially true when traveling between cold and warm temperatures. Layer a light jacket that’s foldable and can easily roll up and stow in a carryon suitcase atop a comfy tee.  A fun, printed scarf is another great layer to keep your outfit stylish and comfortable on both sides of the trip.

No. 2: Wear your heaviest shoes.  Save as much room (and weight) as possible by wearing your heaviest and largest shoes.  Wedges and espadrilles are best worn, while sandals and flats are stowed in luggage.

No. 3: Wear your hat.  Avoid damaging your sun hats and protect them from losing their shape by wearing one (and carefully carrying any additional hats in your purse).  And besides wearing a hat allows for a much easier hair day.

No. 4: Keep essentials close.  Nothing is worse than scrambling to dig out your laptop in the security line or find your new book in the bottom of your bag while others wait in the aisle.  Consider using a bag that keeps all of your necessities and in-flight entertainment within easy reach.

Do you have a warm weather getaway planned?  What pieces do you consider to be the best airport outfit essentials? Cheers, Kat

A Trip To The Farm

A Chilly Visit to See Serenbe's Tiny Houses for Artists

A few weeks ago, my friend and photog Kathryn and I escaped the city to celebrate the launch of the Rural Art Farm Cottages at Serenbe.  The launch gave us a peek at small house living; we poked around the cottages that will serve as artists’ new digs, all constructed by architecture students at Auburn University.  We knew we were in for a treat…especially since our friends (and noted designers) Steve McKenzie & Kerry Howard created the gorgeous interiors

Being back at Serenbe also reminded me just what a little road trip can do for your soul; you feel so removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, and you’re only 45 minutes away.  But when we hopped in the car, I was in no way prepared for just how FREEZING it was that day (I swear it almost snowed)!  Skipping around to get warm in my fave platform sneakers (actually so comfortable), I was happy to at least have my camel Campaign coat and my wool fedora to keep a little heat in. And of course, being hands-free thanks to my Christmas present to myself (talk about a beautiful cross-body bag) helped too.  Now if only I had remembered some mittens!  Truly, MKR

Well seeing as how Old Man Winter has finally decided to join us here in the A, I’m doing whatever I can to stay warm.  But with the cold temps, there’s no reason to sacrifice style that is both comfortable and put together, which for me means piling on the layers. . And of course, you know I’ve been dying to rock my penny loafers (which are on MAJOR sale).

Pairing layers, especially those of different fits and styles can be tricky.  When working in layers it’s important to mix in different fits (ie. fitted and loose, oversized and tight), rather than keep it all in the same family.  Doing so gives your outfit shape, and looks put together—rather than sloppy—which can sometimes happen when you start layering. You don’t want to be swimming in a pair of wide-leg flares with a bulky sweater, or looking like one big marshmallow puff in an oversized coat.

An overcoat this time of year is a must (duh), I especially love this one because of its subtle pattern and light weight. I add warmth to this outfit with a super-soft knit vest over my tried-and-true striped button down blouse.  And since the vest is oversized and roomy, a pair of sharp, tailored black pants (my favorite have always been J.Crew’s Minnie Pant!) to keep the outfit fitted and flattering.  I give the look a bit of boyish charm with bordeaux-colored penny loafers.  This pair is a favorite because it’s soft buttery leather that completely forms to your foot not to mention they’re on MAJOR sale.  In fact, pretty much everything I’m wearing is on big time SALE (penny loafers, vest, coat, necklace, sunnies).  I wore the penny loafers ALL day and had absolutely no trouble, no blisters, no pain.  Score!  Lastly, because my look is pretty tried and true tomboy I added that bit of feminine edge by layering on some sparkly necklaces.  Who says you can’t wear loads of diamonds (faux diamonds that is) to work!?   Truly, MKR
