The Coffee Table Styling Formula You Should Know

As MKR taught us before, styling a beautiful coffee table is really quite simple.  She summed it up with a fool-proof coffee table styling formula: Books + Flowers + Trays + Objects + Depth.

No matter the size or shape of your coffee table, the surface is a wonderful opportunity to showcase items as part of a collection and reflection of you and your life.  While I know a coffee table can seem daunting the best way to start tackling the table is by thinking of your coffee table in quadrants; designing each quadrant separately, but making sure they fit with the big picture, or rather the coffee table as a whole.

First, coffee table books are an obvious must.  They offer great conversational pieces, offering a hint of personality of the home owner.  Coffee table books serve as the perfect landing for smaller, decorative objects (like the animal magnifying glass), and also play into the depth (part of our fool-proof coffee table styling formula) of the coffee table by adding varying heights.

The next piece of the puzzle is a no-brainer, flowers.  Flowers add life to any space, and who could deny how beautiful freshly cut blooms are?  Of course, fresh flowers on a weekly basis can start to get expensive, so another great option is a small plant like a topiary, succulent or cactus that’s easy to care for (see our list of our eight favorite, easy indoor house plants).  And while I never thought I would once say it, faux flowers have come a long way.

Decorative trays easily corral and organize smaller items so the surface doesn’t appear messy. As pictured above, MKR uses a faux python tray to house her collection of Japanese calligraphy brushes (which also add strong pops of color).  Trays are great especially for smaller items such as candles, matchboxes, coasters, or any other small and decorative trinkets. Lastly, add a few larger decorative objects such as these extra large dominos and voila a perfectly styled coffee table!  Cheers, Kat

A Twist On The Thanksgiving Classics

Walnut, Cranberry & Herb Dressing + Cranberries with Orange Peels & Cinnamon

A Twist on the Thanksgiving ClassicsThanksgiving Recipes via Waiting on Martha A Twist on the Thanksgiving Classics via Waiting on Martha Thanksgiving turkey and monogrammed turkey platterThanksgiving stuffing with cranberries and pom seeds

You know, there’s really not much straying from the usual dishes on Thanksgiving (turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, etc.) but every year, I try to do a different take on the classics.  Especially when it comes to the stuffing and the cranberry sauce (I’m really obsessed with cranberries right now).

I always really enjoy a good crunch with soft bites, and I’ve found that Thanksgiving stuffing is the perfect dish which to add a little crunch.  By adding cranberries, walnuts, plenty of fresh herbs and a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds to the stuffing, the dish welcomes another depth of  flavor and texture.

But I’m sure you have someone around the table that wants their dishes how they like it, year after year, no changes (in my case: my entire family).  Luckily, my Thanksgiving stuffing recipe doesn’t change much even with my addition of cranberries and pomegranate seeds.  Per the recipe those are added at the end making it easy to incorporate those to just half of the dish, while leaving the other classic.

A quick way to elevate your cranberry sauce, another Thanksgiving classic, is to add freshly grated orange peels, juice from the orange and a sprinkle of cinnamon.  The cinnamon adds a level of warmth while the orange adds a new crisp bite of citrus.  And I like to think my cranberry sauce is even more gorgeous atop with fresh orange peels.  Don’t the colors just pop!?

This year I also traded out our standard dinner rolls for the buttery, melt in your mouth, croissant roll.   And no I didn’t slave away for hours in the kitchen making them from scratch, instead I opted for the taste-like-made-from-scratch-but-really-they’re-frozen croissants from Williams Sonoma.  These guys, including the chocolate, have always been a Christmas morning tradition for my family so I thought why not enjoy them on Thanksgiving as well.

Lastly, I’ve found that pre-cutting your turkey to serve makes it so much easier for guests to help themselves (not to mention it’s such a more gorgeous presentation!). After all, nobody wants to stare at a turkey carcass while they dig in for seconds. Oh, and a brass serving set and fresh eucalyptus from Trader Joe’s (for only $5) instantly elevates the turkey platter to impress everyone around the table.  TRULY, MKR

A Southern Thanksgiving

You may have heard through a little bird, or a very loud bird called Twitter, that I’ve joined SMP Living as one of their newest editors.  Eeek!  And I thought what better way to kick off this new partnership/love affair, than with my Southern Thanksgiving captured by the talented Rustic White.

In the South few things are held as high as tradition and family. And what’s more traditional than gathering around a Thanksgiving table with family and friends to feast on the season’s bounty?  Inspired by my love for a classic Thanksgiving, I combined rich browns and oranges with an unexpected twist of coral and sage greens to create a picturesque Southern table.  Pomegranate’s Aviary patterned linens, pom pom placemats and napkins were the ideal backdrop for my faux bois and gourd patterned plates, rose gold silverware, and feathered napkin rings.  I finished the tablescape with ivory candles along with fresh florals in burgundy, orange, and green.

The centerpiece, a smoked turkey (courtesy of my Big Green Egg), was presented on a monogrammed platter.  I accompanied the star of the show with side dishes like sweet potato au gratin, green bean casserole, and foccacia with chestnut stuffing housed in my fabby Staub pumpkin cocette.  I’ll be sharing all of the recipes this week and next so you can be ready for Thanksgiving Day, but in the mean time I’ve teamed up with SMP and Pomegranate for a little giveaway to help you recreate this entire look.  One lucky winner will receive $460 worth of Pomegranate Linens…
