Well today is the day, The Big Reveal for the One Room Challenge.  Over the past five weeks, you’ve watched my loft come together, and you’ve seen the colorful and quirky vibes that inspire the space.  Today, I couldn’t be more excited to show you the final product.

A cozy reading corner with a hanging rattan chair seemed like an obvious choice in the room.  Paired with white sheepskin rugs and my favorite gold pouf, the pieces created a separate and distinct sitting area still in view of all the gorgeous art.  And I love that I can easily pull my tini table away from the main seating to provide a place to set my wine and current reading materials.

The sofa upholstered in custom Steve Mckenzie’s loop fabric, which you caught a glimpse of last week, is grounded by a classic jute rug that lightens up the dark wood floors and brings the vibe back to casual.  Society Social’s python parson table in stone provides the perfect set up for our bar and the Cleo Bunching Tables work perfectly for the odd room size, while allowing space for books and personal items.  And because seating is limited my funky, marabou feathered poufs are ready to be put to use as additional seating or to pull up for a quick game of backgammon.

Finally, rounding out the room, and really putting the cherry on the sundae, is my gallery wall.  With 24 total pieces hung on one gigantic wall I mixed and matched 3d items such as a gold hand hook, skateboard, and sconce with classic photographs and one of a kind paintings from the likes of Gray Malin, Britt Bass, Minted, and Sally King Benedict to really give it a collected and personal feel.  Plus there’s room for the wall to grow and evolve as I continue to find and add new pieces.

Well my friends, that completes my second One Room Challenge (check out the past 5 weeks HERE).  The space may have turned out more Palm Springs than Palm Beach, but regardless, I hope you love my loft as much as I do, and I hope that it inspires you to be bold and have fun with design.  Life is too short to always play it safe.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Big thanks to Linda from Calling It Home for having me and for all of the people and brands that helped bring this room to life including: Rustic White, Steve McKenzies, Westside Custom Upholstery, Society Social, Minted, Oomph, AllModern, Britt Bass, Times Two Design, and Mark & Graham.

One Room Challenge: Week One

Filed Under > Ideas & Inspiration

Palm Beach Inspiration

If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge it goes a little something like this: Twenty designers/bloggers (listed below) have six weeks to completely transform any room of their choosing.  Each week, on Wednesdays, we’ll share our progress and hopefully provide a little insight and inspiration into just how the design process works.  For my last One Room Challenge, I chose to re-design my office (seen HERE), with my biggest hurdle being the time frame.  I tend to procrastinate.  This time I’ve chosen to design our upstairs loft.

I haven’t done much with our loft since we moved in two years ago.  It’s not the most inviting space with an awkward shape and absolutely zero natural light so I have my work cut out for me.  First step; inspiration.  Drawing from the colorful, and sometimes quirky vibe of palm beach I’ll be transforming our loft from dark and gloomy to warm and inviting.  There’s plans for a bar (obviously), a reading nook, and hopefully a spot for one of our favorite games, backgammon.

Truthfully I haven’t even begun so we’ll see how this all plays out, but in the mean time welcome to my second One Room Challenge.  I hope you love this new journey as much as you loved the previous.  And tell me, what room would you redecorate given the time?  Truly, MKR

2016 Fall One Room Challenge: Week 4

Install in-progress & a few road bumps along the way
Filed Under > One Room Challenge

One Room Challenge sneak peek, @waitingonmartha

Week Four is here, and man does it all feel real (wait did I say that last week?  It’s all starting to blend).  But if you’ve been following along, then you know I’ve been busy working away and designing two (yes two) model apartment units. And in the previous One Room Challenge projects, around Week Four I’d be scrambling, finalizing plans and placing last-minute orders (only to hold my breath they’ll arrive in time).  Fortunately this year, I have a strict deadline to adhere to, with everything installed for a walk-through with the AMLI team this Friday. Yes, this Friday!

So this week instead of still waiting for pieces to arrive, I’ve been enjoying perhaps my favorite part of the process; styling and putting the finishing touches on the spaces.  But fair warning, if you know how I design, then you know I’m pretty heavy-handed when it comes to styling.  However, because I wanted to create the perspective where renters are able to envision moving their own life into these spaces, I’ve shown great—and I mean great—restraint when its come to styling each room and vignette.  And I must say, it’s been a breath of fresh air to not over accessorize.

Anyway, like with any One Room Challenge project, I have hit a few road bumps along the way as I began installing each room. But one thing I’ve learned is that you just have to roll with it.  There’s no way you’re going to get through a design project without something getting damaged or delayed.  I of course had to remind myself of this (maybe over and over) this week as I had late deliveries and items arrive that looked nothing like I had anticipated.

Hurricane Matthew got in the way of a handful of deliveries (among everything else!).  Some vendors on the east coast experienced major delays, causing me to surrender a key piece or two that were in my initial plan.  I also had a few surprises; when I ordered these chairs, they appeared a cool, chambray blue.  This week, they arrived looking a charcoal grey black instead. Thankfully, they still look stunning in the space (!).

I also had one console arrive completely broken.  Shattered.  With less than two weeks to complete the project (even less if you count Friday’s walk-through), I knew I had to improvise and quickly come up with a Plan B. One of my rugs also turned out to be a tad too big…which usually isn’t so bad.  BUT I had planned to use it to define an office space from the combined living room.  Luckily, I was able to make it work with a little more lead-in into the living room. Lastly, I ordered a mirror that looks a little more antiqued than I had originally envisioned it to be.  Again, I’m grateful that it still works in the space.

It’s a whirlwind, but now we’re down to the grind!  Wish me luck as I put the finishing touches on everything this week.  Stay tuned for next week when we start sharing a few of the rooms in all their final reveal glory.  Truly, MKR
