The One Room Challenge, Week Three

An honest look into why this might be the first one room challenge I can't complete on time

Well it’s officially the half way point of the ORC and today I’ve got nothing for you.  Not a photograph, not a product to share, not a piece of fabric, nada.  To say I’m behind the eight ball would be an understatement.

Now, this is the fifth One Room Challenge I’ve participated in, and I’m always a tad behind.  But this is the first time I’m actually fearful of not being able to pull the ORC off.  I’ve completely lost the past 7 days because of a sinus infection and emergency dental surgery, which by the way is not yet resolved with a second surgery scheduled for next week.  And in looking at the calendar I just realized I’m out of town for my besties wedding the week before the big reveal which is when I always have my ORC space’s photographed. So in reality instead of three more weeks to complete the space I actually only have two. Picture me hyperventilating as I type this.

With this even tighter time crunch the two most concerning areas are fabric choices and the sectional.  I just picked out fabric today and I needed it to arrive like yesterday.  Prayers that the fabric gets here lightning fast and the upholster can work some speedy magic.   As far as the sectional of choice goes, last week I talked in depth about how hard sectionals are to come by and if this one doesn’t work then I’m not sure what I’ll do.

Oh, and just for one more twist I decided to nix the grass cloth.  As much as I LOVE grass cloth we’re planning on putting the house up for sale next year so I thought it best not to wallpaper this room since so much of my home is already wallpapered.  Which means I need to paint the entire living room and ceiling in Farrow and Ball’s All White; so that will be fun.

Yep, that’s what I got.  And since I don’t have any photographic evidence of me sitting in a panic I thought I’d share a few while living room inspiration pics.  As mentioned previously, the goal is to transform this room into a neutral, calming space.  Hopefully.  Which surprisingly, when you search for neutral, or white living room inspiration it’s actually tougher to find than you may think.  So many all white rooms are too modern, too romantic, too beachy, or too shabby chic.  I’m going for more of a California cool vibe…not boho, more California traditional.  Is that a thing? Ha!

Hope my other co-participants are a bit farther along then I am! Truly, MKR

2016 Fall One Room Challenge: Week 1

Sharing This Round's Mission & Revisiting Favorite Shots from Past Rounds

It’s that time again, friends!  The 2016 fall One Room Challenge officially starts TODAY. I’m absolutely thrilled to participate, and as an ORC vet, I’m feeling good with a few past projects under my belt (my home office, upstairs loft and the WOM team office).  Though vet or not, I assure you, there are unforeseen disasters that are just waiting to happen during the 6-week whirlwind that is the ORC.  But disaster be damned, I’m betting big and promising to make this my best and by far the biggest ORC challenge I’ve done to date.

So how exactly will this be our biggest?  Because this go around I’ll be taking on not one room, not even one home, but I’ll be designing TWO “homes” (surprise Linda) in just six short weeks.  Our 2016 fall One Room Challenge official mission: make two model apartments feel like home.  The goal: ridding the space of impersonal, nondescript details and bringing in warm, welcoming design full of textures, motifs and decor that anyone would want to call home.

Luckily for me, both apartments are brand-spanking-new with gorgeous fixtures, flooring, and spare no expense kitchen and bath areas.  Plus amazing natural light (hallelujah), with floor-to-ceiling windows.  But this won’t be a cake walk by any means.  Both spaces have extremely tricky floor plans and NO allowance for my standard big statement moves such as wallpaper, dramatic light fixtures, and bold paint.  Remember these beauties are about to be for rent, so it wouldn’t be fair to have tenants fall in love with details they aren’t allowed to implement.

In true ORC form, I only have six weeks to transform both apartments, and just to clear up any misconceptions, these apartments aren’t even fully completed yet.  So if you think I’ve had months to work on them, you’re wrong.  I’ve only been allowed in to measure and it was a complete construction zone, so when I say we’re doing this in 6 weeks, I mean we’re doing this in 6 weeks!!  And the reason we’re sharing this transformation all in one ORC is while they’re two distinct homes this really is one large project.

Next week, I’ll be sharing my mood and inspiration boards for the spaces, and who exactly I had in mind when I designed them.  But for today, I thought I’d just hit replay on a few of my favorite moments of ORC‘s from the past.  Truly, MKR

Week three of the One Room Challenge had me focusing on the upstairs bar, obviously. While impossible to say that the bar has just one show-stopper, it’s hard to argue that the beauty and grandiosity of the Paul Marrot Feathers doesn’t steal the show. Mounted on linen and framed in thick lucite, Feathers is sure to spark a conversation or two over cocktails.

Then there’s the natural agate lamp from Times Two Design. This stunner adds just the right amount of femininity while it’s also the perfect size. Since the room already had lots of color aspects (not all pictured here), I chose the white agate, but the turquoise and emerald agate are jaw-dropping as well.

And of course, how could I forget about the grey python table from Society Social, a constant go-to of mine. The python creates great interest and adds texture to the room, while its stone coloring is the perfect neutral. I’ve put the table in my home, my parent’s home, and I’m currently adding two of the tables to a client’s home. We’re halfway through the One Room Challenge and I’m loving how the loft is coming together thus far.  What is your favorite element?  TRULY, MKR
