One Room Challenge Week Five

We’re in the One Room Challenge home stretch now, and dare I say I might actually pull this room together in time?  I wouldn’t have believed it had you asked me last week, but this week the stars have aligned.

First, my old sleeper sofa was made shiny and new with the help of Steve McKenzie’s stunning hand painted loop fabric and Desmond’s team over at Westside Custom Upholstery.  While available in various colors, the custom black loop on oyster white linen called to me, and I couldn’t be more over the moon with the results.  It has completely transformed the loft, and really brought in that fun, Palm Beach, just-a-tad-crazy vibe I was hoping for.  And I know patterns scare a lot of you, but I’m here to say that decorating is meant to be fun and remember fabrics can always be changed! But if you’re still not sold on upholstering a whole sofa, try adding a little pattern play in the form of an ottoman or chair.

The loft space is also very narrow which doesn’t leave much room for a coffee table or additional seating, but Society Social’s Cleo Bunching Tables stacked with books and personal items collected over time prove to be just the right size.  And a tini table from Oomph can easily be moved throughout the room and makes the perfect perch for a glass of wine.

Lastly, my lighting pieces from AllModern arrived.  The Tribeca Franklin Chandelier (pictured) is simple, modern, and extremely easy to install.  Plus the light it puts out is shocking, I can finally see and entertain upstairs.  The chandelier’s sister, the Tribeca Warren Sconce, has found a home in the middle of my soon-to-be-hung gallery wall, and will serve quite nicely both as art, while giving the wall dimension so not to look so flat.  And the Nur Mini has been hung in the hallway providing a consistent feel throughout the upstairs.

I’m still waiting on my jute rug, which will really ground the room and soften up the space because the current wood flooring makes everything just a tad too dark.  And I’ve got to tackle the gigantic gallery wall, which I’m dreading.  This will be the first large gallery wall I’ve hung, and I’m guessing it’ll take at least a day to measure each piece, mirror the desired look on to the floor, then mirror that look with blue tape on to the wall, and finish by banging nails and praying it all works out.  So please, if you’ve got any tips or tricks up your sleeve, I’m all ears!  Truly, MKR

One Room Challenge…Week 2

ORC-Week-2

Last week I shared my grand plans for completely re-doing the WOM office.  This week I’m sharing a little tendency/habit I have called  procrastination.  I’m a procrastinator.  Always have been, and I’m beginning to accept I probably always will be.  I tell myself it’s because I’m juggling so many things or because I’m at my best when the pressure is on, but really those are just things I, and we all, tell ourselves to make the habits we struggle with seem more acceptable.

To be fair I wasn’t sure which room I was going to work on for the ORC and when I finally did decide on my office to say I was already WAY behind the eight ball was an understatement.  I quickly gathered my thoughts and first took care of the layout and furniture as I knew it would all have to be specially ordered (sharing this next week).  Once that was taken care of I moved on to the “jewelry” of the room, specifically custom drapes for my picture window.  Secretly I had been waiting for this moment as there’s nothing more fun to a designer (at least this designer) than fabric choices.  For me fabrics pull the room together, if not create the feel of the room all together.

As I headed into the fabric store I knew I wanted to do a neutral drape with a pop of color lining and a tassel to top it all off.  The neutral was easy, but the lining was proving to be more difficult and as I waded through the sea of fabrics I was beginning to think this might not be a feasible reality and then I saw it.  A glorious mango velvet.  It represented orange, my favorite color, but in a much softer way and all of a sudden my color palette and the entire room came together.  Only problem, it was back ordered 8 weeks.  8 weeks!?  The ORC will be over in 8 weeks!  Deflated and a tad sad I headed to the next fabric store.  Luckily there was another velvet in almost the exact same mango shade, the only problem it was twice the cost!  Twice!  And I needed 13 yards of it!  But this was my palette, this was my centerpiece, I had to buy the fabric.  So buy it I did.  Oh and did I mention I have to rush the order with the work room because the standard time frame doesn’t fit into the ORC timeframe.  My procrastination rearing it’s ugly head again.

But this my friends is the life of design, and more appropriately the life of a procrastinator.  So cheers to embracing all of our habits (both good and bad), to trying to be better everyday, and to spending too much money on drapes that better be fan-freaking-tastic!  Truly, MKR

2016 Fall One Room Challenge: Week 3

How To Add Art To Your Home That's Anything But Boring
Filed Under > One Room Challenge

2016 Fall One Room Challenge

There’s nothing that makes a space quite like art.  It’s the easiest way to infuse personality and really make a space your own.  That’s why in all of my ORC’s and in all of my design, including my own home, there’s always an emphasis on art.  Which brings us to the focus this week.

Next week, I’ll begin to actually show you the space coming together, specifically the art, but this week I thought I’d share my art -focused design board, as well as a few tips that I always adhere to when bringing art into my life.

When talking, designing and buying art, I stick to a few rules.  Rule one: buy what you love.  Like wine, art is subjective, so unless your collecting or investing, then forget about if the art will lose its value, or if it’s well respected, or blah, blah blah.  If you love it, buy it.  End of story.

Rule two: always think three-dimensionally.  Art isn’t just something you frame; it’s African juju hats, baskets and skateboards (see my loft), it’s literally anything you can hang on the wall.  So add a bit of dimension and depth by thinking outside the frame.  Oh, and bonus points if you can fit a swing arm lamp or sconce into the mix.

Rule three: mix it up with frames and sizing.  With so many framing options now available (white, gold, wood, ghost, black) there’s no need to be basic.  Plus digital framing services make it easier than ever; I’m a big fan of Simply Framed.  Same goes with sizing; treat a gallery wall like a puzzle and mix in all shapes and sizes.

Now that you’ve heard my three rules of thumb when it comes to art installations, tell me…do you like to go bold on your walls? What 3-D details are you dying to try? Stay tuned for next week’s peek into the spaces, where I start to incorporate these pieces you see here.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Follow along on Snapchat tomorrow as I give you a few sneak peeks as I actually begin installing the art into the space.
