When in doubt: throw on an all black outfit.  There’s no denying how effortlessly chic an all black outfit is, and when it’s made up of timeless wardrobe essentials…well, you’ll find yourself gravitating to it even when you swear you have “nothing to wear.”

I’m a BIG fan of any versatile outfit that can take me from daytime meetings to drinks after hours. Case in point with this all black outfit…I can run around during the day in comfort in my favorite pair of white loafers (seen here and here). I’ve literally ran in these loafers through the airport when Kat and I almost missed our flight to Caneel Bay. But on a busy day, I can bring along my patent leather pumps to slip on as we make our way to happy hour.  I’ve mentioned this before, but I always stick to patent leather for a timeless black pump because patent leather won’t scuff as easily as soft leather or suede, making them a smart wardrobe staple. And this pair won’t break the bank as quickly as, say, a pair of Manolos.  Though I am a BIG fan of Manolos

By now you’ll recognize my beloved leather jacket, and don’t worry it’s still one of my most valued items in my closet (and it just gets better with age!).  The jacket quickly evens out the fancy feeling my tasseled top brings making everything not too fussy.  I’m also wearing my go-to classic black pants that go with just about everything in my closet all year around.  The pop of “color” to my all black outfit today…well, it’s another neutral which is a-okay with me. My cross-body bag in supple camel is a definite favorite in my closet these days; a bag which I can easily hold or throw over my shoulder as I meet and greet with drink in-hand. Truly, MKR

Pumpkin Spice Drop Cookies & Apple Cinnamon Fritters

The Trip to the Pumpkin Patch with Sweet Treats and Thermos, A Rye Family Tradition

This should come to most of you as no surprise, but I’m one of those people that look forward to pumpkin picking on a Saturday (or any day) in September just as much as waking up on Christmas day.  Well, okay maybe it’s not quite like waking up to Christmas coffee and a glittering tree chalked full of presents, but it’s definitely up there. And over the past few years, we’ve really turned the hunt for the perfect pumpkins into a full day adventure.  With the windows down and songs from Hocus Pocus playing in my head, we pile into our car, loaded up with a thermos or two of warm coffee and apple cider, and our favorite snacks en route to the pumpkin patch.

To us, it’s the perfect amount of time out of the house, away from the computer, and the best way to breathe in the crisp fall air that’s finally here.  And of course, it’s an excuse to wear my favorite fall uniform (think a great plaid shirt and the coziest sweater) and break out one or two of my vintage plaid blankets.  Because I mean, what’s better than rolling out your blanket with a thermos and sweets in-hand after you pick out this year’s pumpkins?  All the feels.

Since this annual ritual is meant to be a fun, enjoyable day, it will never do to be stressed in the kitchen before the trek to the patch.  So I usually pick up a good mix of treats from a local doughnut shop (Revolution Doughnuts or Sublime Doughnuts are my favorites).  When I do have a little time on my hands, however, I whip up some super easy cinnamon sugar doughnuts or stick to two tried-and-true recipes that cannot be beaten: pumpkin spice drop cookies and apple cinnamon fritters.

The second you bite into these, cake-like cookies with their warm, spicy pumpkin flavor, you’ll see why they’ve been some of my favorites for years now.  I’ve found they’re the perfect big-batch recipe this time of year…they’re seriously so simple to make and are ALWAYS a hit with a crowd.  And I’m not sure how golden brown apple cinnamon fritters with a white icing glaze could ever disappoint; they’re lightly fried to perfection with light, pillow-soft centers.  I use THIS recipe because why try to improve on something that’s already pretty dang fantastic?!

Tell me friends, have you made a trip to the pumpkin patch?  What fall treats are always on your list?  Truly, MKR

An Easy Cheese & Charcuterie Board

How to Build the Ultimate, Yet Simple, Winter Cheese & Charcuterie Board
Filed Under > Appetizers & Sides

Winter Cheese & Charcuterie Board Inspiration from Waiting on MarthaWinter Cheese & Charcuterie BoardNew Year's Black Eyed Peas and Cheese + Charcuterie Board

What better way to round out the stretch of gluttony that comes with the holidays than the ultimate, abundant cheese & charcuterie board?  Turn to this easy, no-cook appetizer to serve at your New Year’s cocktail party as guests gather round to mingle and nibble on these tasty bites.

Though you really can’t go wrong with a plate of any cheeses and meats, you can consider a few rules of thumb when creating your board.  Always have at least one stinky, one hard and one soft cheese.  Some of my absolute favorite, if you can find them, cheeses are Cypress Grove’s Midnight Moon, anything from Cow Girl Creamery  and Rogue Creamery.

Also always keep in mind how your guests will enjoy everything you’ve prepared.  I live by the entertaining rule that you shouldn’t have to set down your drink to grab bites from the board, so simplify the presentation for guests to easily enjoy with libation in-hand.

And for the accompaniments?  Think sweet and savory options, with a nod to seasonal fruits (fresh and dried).  In this winter cheese & charcuterie board I stacked salted salami and paper-thin prosciutto. Dried apricots and figs. Vibrant pomegranate. Drunken, pickled tomatoes. A variety of olives and a rich tapenade.  Cocoa-powdered corn nuts and candied ginger to cleanse the palette. And of course, black-eyed peas for good luck! Truly, MKR

P.S. We’re helping take the guess work out of New Years by teaming up with some fabulous Ladies ( Emily McCarthyWomanistaMrs. LilienLavin LabelEat, Chef Made PizzazzerieFancy Ashley, & Libbie Summers) to create an entire NYE menu.  We’ve obviously got your cheese and charcuterie board taken care of, but make sure you to click on everyone’s Blog for a whole slew of cocktails, apps, entrees, and desserts.
