Fall is FINALLY here (I know you’re probably sick of us talking about it by now, but it’s my favorite), and you know what that means…a trip to the pumpkin patch was on the top of my to-do list!  I treasure the trip every October, being on a serious mission to pick out the best of the best to spruce up our front door.  And of course the pumpkin patch gives me the perfect excuse to practice my fall #OOTD, which usually looks a lot like today’s perfectly plaid shirt layered under a cozy sweater, with a pair of great jeans, a ball cap, tote and a blanket scarf (because #duh).

Hands-down the best part about dressing for fall is the layers, am I right?  And here in Atlanta it’s not just stylish, but a necessity since it’s chilly in the mornings and evenings and warmer during the day.   Lately, my favorite keep-it-casual trick when layering is to roll my sweater up halfway, keeping the shirt underneath tight to the wrist.  It creates that extra pop to any outfit, adding interest and layers to the look while keeping it pulled together, but un-fussy.

And while we’re on the subject, let’s talk about those layers.  I immediately snatched up this plaid shirt and was so pleased to find that it was long enough (which is so important to me, again because I have a long torso).  In a medium, it was the perfect size; not too loose or too tight.  Plus the material is thin, having a natural wrinkle which looks good 100% of the time underneath a sweater or jacket (read: no wrinkles or creases which prevents those weird indents or bulges that can happen when layering).

When I look at my favorite fall layers, I always love to pull in a little pattern play.  This outfit is no exception; plaid and stripes always pair so perfectly together.  While this sweater would be beautiful dressed up with a nice pair of slacks (ivory on ivory would create an amazing monotone look), it can also mix and match with a casual plaid blouse like I did here.

But what I’m really raving about are these jeans…I was honestly a bit shocked with how good they were!  They’re mid-rise, and fit me in all of the right places especially since I recently realized that I shouldn’t be wearing low-rise jeans with my long torso.  And these jeans are the answer to all of my dressing room woes.  With enough stretch in them, they’re beyond comfortable but they also never lose their stretch on the second day. Believe me, I know the perfect jeans are hard to find, but this pair has earned a solid spot at the top of my list.

And with that, I had what I consider a perfect fall day and found my go-to fall outfit this year.  Tell me friends, what does your perfect fall day look like?  Truly, MKR

P.S. Next week we’ll be sharing a recipe for one of my favorite fall treats that pairs perfectly with a trip to the pumpkin patch (hint hint: donuts) so stay tuned! xo

Laundry room organization tips

In the dream world, we’d all have huge laundry rooms filled with endless cabinets and impeccable organization systems in place.  But the truth is, many of us have tiny spaces for some of the most important household chores.  Last year, MKR teamed up with Pottery Barn to tackle laundry room organization, eliminating clutter and maximizing her space as much as possible. As she showed us, laundry room organization wasn’t so hard.

First, she traded in her old hampers for a conveniently divided woven hamper.  It amazed MKR how much the presorting helped keep the room organized, load after load of darks and lights.

Second, she relied on both wire baskets and woven baskets (both currently marked down!) to hold her Costco-sized household products and all of her other cleaning necessities.

Head on over to the original post to read more easy laundry room organization tricks. As you’ll learn, it’s really as simple as adding a few key pieces to keep the space tidy, functional and clutter-free.  Cheers, Kat

Selecting the Right Rug for Your Space

Quick Tips for Settling on This Important Home Decor Buy
Filed Under > Styling "How-To's" & Tips

I’m a firm believer that a rug can make (or break) a room.  A great rug can instantly add much-needed dimension and grounding to a space.  But just as quickly, when sized too small, a rug can dwarf a room and cripple its design appeal.

When selecting the right rug for your space, you’ll need to consider color, texture, and most important of all: size.

Rugs, unfortunately, are notoriously expensive, and the sticker-shock of a pricy piece can steer even the most confident buyers away from the right rug.  And while rugs need to stand the test of time (read: foot traffic), it’s important to invest in a rug that’s high quality.

Some of my favorite sources for rugs include Scott’s Antique Market here in Atlanta, and online at Lulu & Georgia and One Kings Lane.  Selecting the rug can feel so intimidating, and the purchase is nothing to rush or skimp on.  Good news, though?  Once you settle on the perfect rug, it’s an investment piece that you’ll enjoy for years and years to come.  Below, I’ve outlined a few quick tricks and things to keep in mind when selecting the right rug.  And if you’re looking for specific sizing specs + diagrams, this one is really great to reference. Good luck!  Truly, MKR

No. 1…When choosing a rug for your dining room keep in mind size.  The rug must be big enough for the chairs to slide back and still be on top of the rug.

No. 2…For a living room rug, consider how you can “anchor” the space with the rug.  Either stay consistent with all furniture legs on top of the rug, or only the front legs of the chairs and sofa.  Consistency is key here; you don’t want some to be all the way on top of the rug and others to be drifting off of it.

No. 3…If you find yourself with a rug you love, but is too small think about layering which also adds texture, depth, and style.  Start with a large jute rug or sisal rug and layer a smaller rug, preferably with a different shape on top.  If your top rug is the same shape place it diagonally across your bottom rug.  Some of you may remember I layered this faux cowhide rug (which is the best faux cowhide I’ve ever, EVER seen) on top of a large jute rug in our most recent One Room Challenge project at the WOM office

No. 4…Avoid a round rug if you’re styling a rectangle or square room.  I have seen round rugs done well in foyers and dining nooks, but end up looking a bit awkward in other spaces.  The only exception to the rule; drawing attention to the center of a room by adding a round rug under a table or object that is the rooms main focal point.

No. 5…Consider placing small rugs at high-traffic areas like the base of your kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and doors, but be sure to include a rug pad to keep it from slip sliding all around.
