As promised, we’re sharing the final reveal for our second apartment in this year’s One Room Challenge.  While our space from Reveal One felt most like me now, this space feels most like me about five years ago.  Fun, loud, un-apologetic, and full of show-stopping moments such as our custom banana leaf sectional, a bright cheetah headboard, and lots of deep orange velvet.

But before we can dive into the details of today, let’s do a quick recap again for those just joining us.  As I shared yesterday, I set out to transform two model high end apartment units in the heart of Buckhead, one being a two-bedroom with a young couple in mind.  Today’s space: a one bedroom apartment fit for a single, sassy girl boss.

While the install had a few complications like any typical design project, it was otherwise smooth sailing working with such a beautiful slate.  Pulling together the large living space was perhaps the most difficult since it was just that…one big space.  I needed to help future tenants visualize fitting the majority of their home into a undefined box.  Which of course, meant defining each area: living, dining and office.

Starting with the living room, I went big with a custom banana leaf sectional sofa.  The sofa allows great separation of the living/dining room, but because the sectional isn’t tall, it still allows for an open view of the entire space and makes everything feel spacious.  I also chose to again forego a standard coffee table, and instead use two smaller, (moveable) tables.  I talked a little about this in yesterday’s reveal as well; I like to incorporate pieces that can move with your life.  By having two smaller side tables (here’s a similar option from Society Social) rather than one, you can scoot them around to reach guests at opposite ends of that large, glorious sofa.  Lastly, the killer antique mirrored console table with statement stools topped with a smaller collage of framed art from Minted serves as a great piece to house books, the cutest little gold lamp, and most likely a necessary DVR.

Next, the floor to ceiling windows jut out, creating an enclave just large enough for a major desk and chair moment.  The burl wood and brass desk and orange velvet chair that literally steal the show, become the perfect place for anyone to sit and pen their plans. I kept the desk‘s surface simple by placing a white and gold lamp and easy planted boxwood front and center.  Just about anything would have looked amazing in the foreground of these views, but this combo is one of my personal favorites in the space.

For the final defining area we come to the dining room.  A room, which if I’m playing favorites, might just be it.  The table alone is EVERYTHING, and paired with these chairs and this abstract print it’s the perfect area to both read the morning paper and celebrate the happiest of gatherings.  Rounding out the room is a small bar cart (obviously) and three orange velvet bar stools that tie together all three spaces.

Lastly, moving into the bedroom, I obviously didn’t hold back with bright, bold and beautiful girly prints.  This custom made headboard plays so well with the colorful throw pillows, cozy throw blankets and the prettiest bedding from Pine Cone Hill.  But the color crush doesn’t end at the bed; I brought the bold green to the bamboo dresser with this gorgeous green lacquer table lamp from Worlds Away.

And that my friends, wraps up our fourth ORC!  Tell me, would you go bold in a space like this?  I’d love to know in the comments below.  And of course, in the meantime, I’m counting down until WOM’s next One Room Challenge.  A big thanks to Linda, House Beautiful and all of the generous vendors for helping me achieve another design dream.  Be sure to check out all of the product details in the credits below.  Truly, MKR

Atlanta Food & Wine Festival: Powerful & Delicious

Easy Takeaways from an Elegant Event to Translate to Your Next Dinner Party

If you were following along on Snapchat and Instagram two weeks ago, you got an inside peek into one of the best southern events all year around, in my humble opinion: the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival.  While we were busy (literally, we styled and designed eight of the events during the fun-filled weekend), we agreed that it almost didn’t even feel like work as we saw the beautiful events come together.  And while we of course plan to share the whole weekend with you over the next week, we also wanted to provide a few ideas on how to recreate each look on a smaller, more dinner-party-for-four scale.

First up, the ‘Powerful & Delicious’ dinner.  The night celebrated nearly a hundred of the south’s female business and community leaders, and invited them to an evening to support some of the region’s top female food and beverage talent.  Naturally, I knew that this dinner had to be show-stopping.  And what better way to toast to these powerful women than with an elegant, and proper, southern supper?!

When planning to host and toast these ladies, I knew I wanted everything to be quintessentially southern.  Tables donned in rich, preppy navy and white stripes with the most gorgeous fresh magnolia stems, garlands, and foliage from the amazing Weston Farms in Raleigh, NC,, mint julep cups and blue & white chinoiserie bud vases (my all-time favorites and some I brought from home) full of flowers from Blooms of Dunwoody, and settings placed with a half a dozen glasses (it was Atlanta Food & WINE after all).

While this was certainly a grand evening and the perfect way to kick off The Festival, this spread has a few great takeaways worth applying to get the look at a dinner party at home, too. I think it’s safe to say that these tablescapes prove the power of great linens and lush florals.  But if you look closely, you’ll see I also added height to each table (something I think will always, ALWAYS bump your tablescape up a notch) with the garlands and propped signage. I then varied the heights by incorporating the shorter bud vases among the taller details.

Lastly, this event makes a strong case for pattern-play.  Too often, I see tablescapes playing it way too safe with linens and details (too matchy-matchy is boring!).  Here, I’ve brought in a chinoiserie print that effortlessly blends on top of the bold, vibrant stripes.  When mixing patterns and prints, the key is to stay in the same color family; in this case, blue and white.

But perhaps my favorite part of this southern dinner?  The details at each place setting!  We took this year’s festival theme, #KNOWTHESOUTH, to heart by creating fun, educational cards with southern quips, phrases and facts.  They not only furthered the southern theme, with a nod to even the most arguably defined phrase (“bless your heart”!), but they served as great conversation starters around the table and can easily be replicated at your next dinner party, or might I suggest a progressive supper?!  Truly, MKR

How To Style A Console Table; Dissecting The Design

Breaking Down The Details of a Beautiful, Functional Console
Filed Under > Living

How To Style A Console Table, Waiting On Martha Blog

A styled console table, whether that’s in the entryway, hallway, or living room is one of our favorite times form meets function in every home.  So we thought we’d spend today breaking down just how to style a console table.

The console table pictured above, as well as the console table seen here, are some of our top-pinned images of all time!  In order to achieve a pin-worthy and truly functional space, it’s helpful to understand the different components of console table decor.

When it comes to the actual “how” in how to style a console table, think outside the box. And let’s not forget what a console table can actually do for your home. The possibilities are truly endless; in fact MKR’s favorite version of a console table is actually used as a bar in her home and a coffee bar in the office.

Similar to the endless possibilities of what a console table can do for you is the decor that a console table can hold.  Trays, flowers, candles and art; the styling combinations bring beauty and organization together in one easy sweep.

Balance is key.  Varied height with table lamps, accents and plants, along with bold accents and multiple dimensions all work in tandem to unify the design.  And while this space can be completely customized to show off your personality, it lends itself to frequent redesign with a simple edit of accents.

To go into a bit more detail, below we’ve broken down all of the design elements that make this space beautiful.  We’d love to know if you love a console table as much as we do and how are you using your console table?! Cheers, Kat

The Surface
By starting with the surface, you’ll determine how big of statements you’ll use for the rest of the decor and accents.  Here, MKR has utilized the modern, clean design of a glass console table as the blank canvas to allow room for a show-stopping lamp, colorful art and statement stool to really shine.

Other gorgeous options include ornate tables like this blue raffia, this natural grasscloth, and this bone-inlay console table.

One thing to consider: some console tables like this one have a lower, second shelf.  This will allow for more styling space, but will limit the use of stools and ottomans.

Art
Think of oversize wall art as the anchor of this space.  A bright, bold piece centers the vignette and gives it the dimension it deserves.

Don’t want to invest in an original piece just yet?  Check out Minted and One Kings Lane for beautiful options for framed prints and printed canvases.

The Lamp
The next piece is a no-brainer; the lamp.  Not only will you want a lighting source on in this styled vignette, you will need the added height and interest it brings.  A table lamp instantly unifies the art and the styled items on the table.  MKR incorporated a stunning Mary McDonald statement lamp to great effect.

More gorgeous options include this gold bamboo table lamp, this gilded beauty by AERIN, and this simplistic, and really reasonably priced, white table lamp

Stools & Ottomans
This part is what makes the space so pin-worthy!  Stools and ottomans are the perfect marriage of form and function, and they really take the vignette to the next level.

Whether that’s a Moroccan leather pouf, a set of X benches, the White Hand Stool from Waiting on Martha as pictured above, or two chinoiserie garden stools, this detail always helps tie the space together.  Not to mention, it gives you a place to set your bag in the entryway!

The Book Stack
A stack of books instantly delivers the balance on the table that you’re aiming for; arrange 1-2 stacks with a variety in sizes—they don’t have to be perfect!  Have fun with your book selection, picking out titles and covers that show your personality and interests.  And MKR always reminds us to incorporate a pop of red in a vignette; here she used Art of the 20th Century to do the trick.

Book stacks also act as the perfect pedestal for your favorite accents like a balloon dog, these geometric objects, a brass skull or this gold urchin

Something Fresh
You can never go wrong with fresh blooms or greenery in a styled vignette.  Here, an orchid provides another point of interest and added height.  If you find yourself with a green thumb, having a live plant gives you the perfect excuse to enjoy this styled space throughout your week!  And if you can’t ever keep a plant alive, consider a beautiful faux option like this one

For the Trinkets
When you’re considering how to make this space as functional as it is beautiful, don’t forget a place to stash your car keys, especially if the console table is in the hallway or entryway. Decorative boxes and trinket dishes, like this one and this one, are the perfect additions to your book stacks and accents.
