What To Pack || Napa Valley

Filed Under > Dressing the Part

packing tips napa valley

By the time most of you read this I’ll be wheels up beginning day 1 of my 12 day wine county adventure with Ma(i)sonry and Orison Wines.  If you’re a regular reader of the blog then you’d know I’m a big (BIG) lover of wine so I couldn’t have been more thrilled when Orison and Maisonry wanted to collaborate on a best of Napa Valley piece.  I’ve been to Napa a few times, but I don’t think anything can rival what we have planned.  And while I can’t divulge too much as I’ll be sharing all of my thoughts when I get back I wanted to at least share a few what-to/how-to pack tips with y’all.  So without further ado, and before I’m 3 cabernets deep, my 5 favorite packing tips.  And fair warning…my Instagram feed will be nothing but California sunshine and grapes as far as the eye can see the next 2 weeks.  Cheers!  truly, MKR

No. 1 –  Garment racks are  your friends.  When I began styling I purchased a few rolling garment racks and now I could not imagine packing (or my every day) without them.  They’re great for planning outfits and corralling all of your items in one place.

No. 2 – It’s all about the mini.  When regulations changed and didn’t allow anything over 3.4 oz. carried on it made all of beauty begin creating products in a smaller/travel size which saves a TON of room when packing.  I mean nothing takes up more suitcase space than my every day 20+ oz. can of hairspray or hair volumizer!  So I now buy everything you can in the smaller size and keep them in my beauty bag so all I have to do is grab and go.  I even got my tanning lotion in a mini…how convenient is that?!  And if you’re only carrying on might I suggest storing everything in one of these to make security a breeze.

No. 3 – Expect the unexpected.  When traveling anything can happen; delays, lost luggage, bumps, etc., so best to be prepared.  If you’re checking luggage always carry on your must have beauty products, change of under garments, 1 change of clothing, a bathing suit (if you’re going somewhere beach like all you need is a bathing suit), a back up charger, and a comfortable pair of shoes (I travel everywhere with these in my purse).

No. 4 – Create an itinerary.  Wether it be in your Google calendar, printed out and in your purse, or set up in Outlook have an itinerary with all pertinent addresses and phone numbers (hotels, rental cars, restaurants, etc.) easily accessible.  And make sure any travel companions have a copy, as well as anyone back home that may need to get in touch with you in case of emergency.

No. 5 – Be in the moment.  I’ve lost a lot of peace, a lot of moments to trying to capture them or freeze them in time.  To being stuck to a plan.  To not being willing to take the unchartered path.  No more my Loves.  Traveling is all about the adventure.  And while yes you have to be planned, you have to be ready, you have to pose for those pics so you can record them forever you also have to be willing to throw it all away and go on the grand journey.  Because every day, wether it be on vacation or during your daily commute to work, is a day you’ll never get back so you might as well enjoy the ride.

The 5 Apps We Can’t Stop Talking About

discover more mindfulness throughout your day with these simple apps
Filed Under > Everyday

Headspace Meditation App and other apps we can't stop talking about on Waiting on Martha

I LOVE discovering helpful, new apps.  I mean there’s literally an app for everything; they’re not just limited to social media and online banking anymore.  And both MKR and I have been raving about several new-to-us iPhone apps lately, and we honestly now can’t imagine life without them.

These apps I’m sharing below, including the Headspace meditation app and the MyFlo period tracker, are definitely technology for GOOD, and they’re improving our day-to-day routines with more mindfulness and intention.

When we started The Well Code, our sister wellness brand, we wanted to tap into the feeling of “keeping your well full.”  These apps I list below all help us do that, whether it’s through yoga on-the-go, a few minutes of meditation and more understanding of our health and our own bodies.

I’m really excited to share these new finds with all of you in hopes that you’ll enjoy the simple benefits of them throughout your day, too.  I’d love to know if you use any of them, or which ones you’re downloading today!  And if you’re on a downloading spree, check out these apps too.  Cheers, Kat

P.S.  MKR and I have both reformatted our apps on the phone by categorizing them and putting them into folders.  We’ve found that this has been a real game-changer in keeping us streamlined when we pick up our phones!  This way we don’t get as distracted or inundated with the ever-growing ability to access just about everything at the touch of a button. xo

Meditation has been shown to help people stress less, focus more and even sleep better. Headspace is meditation made simple, and both MKR and I swear by it. Headspace is the go-to app for making meditation simple.  The voice is absolutely amazing (he’s Australian I think?) and the messaging is extremely relevant and helpful in introducing more mindfulness in just a few minutes each day. Highly, highly recommend this app!

Relax Melodies

This one’s pretty simple and straight forward, but one not to be missed.  Sometimes you just need some relaxing melodies without all the fuss.

I find myself needing soothing background music and white noise a lot of times throughout my day if I’m trying to meet a deadline, taking a few moments to meditate and breathe, and of course when I’m falling asleep at night.  This app is one of my favorites, and it’s free!

MyFlo

A period tracker & fertility app

I’ve been really fascinated with hormone health lately, as I’ve been learning how much our hormones affect our energy levels, our metabolism, our moods, and really just overall health.  After reading this post and this post, I was ready to give MyFlo a try.

This period tracker and fertility app tells you what to do to be symptom-free and feel 100% all month long.  You can learn why you have specific symptoms during each of the four phases of your cycle, and what actions to take to fix them, like workouts to do, conversations to have, foods to eat, and simple self care reminders.  This app has changed my life!

With more than 4,000 classes, this easy app helps you practice mindfulness on-the-go wherever you are.  At $18/mo and a 15-day free trial, it’s cheaper than one class at most studios, too.  MKR uses this app to take classes throughout her week, and loves that they can be as short as 5 minutes and as long as 120 minutes. The app syncs to all of your devices too, in case you want to toggle between iPhone, iPad and laptop.

MKR can’t stop hyping this app and I really just need to download it now.  It boasts mood lighting with a sunrise simulation, which is HUGE this time of year as it starts to get darker in the mornings. It also features real-time traffic alerts, seamless Spotify integration to get you going with your favorite playlist, USB charging and more.

Two Different, Non-Dairy Ways to Nespresso

A toasted coconut latte and warm almond milk honey latte recipe to mix up your daily grind
Filed Under > Breakfast & Brunch

I remember seven or eight years ago reading about a new machine that promised to brew Italian espresso with just a touch of a button.  Sure, an Italian espresso machine was nothing new.  But, unlike espresso machines we were familiar with, this new machine promised to be a fraction of the size and at a fraction of the cost.  But while the size and cost may be smaller, we were assured that the taste of the espresso would not. It was called Nespresso.

This promise was a huge selling point for me living in a limited space, one-bedroom Chicago condo.  Not to mention, I didn’t feel like investing thousands of dollars in one appliance.  Fast forward years later, and I’ve had four different Nespresso machines, still enjoying that perfect promised Nespresso moment day after day.

One of my favorite things to do is to get creative with my Nespresso.  Because I try to stay away from dairy products my go-to milk alternatives are always almond and coconut milk.  Alternative milk options have come a long way in the past few years making it easier, and healthier, than ever to mix up your daily Nespresso.

Recently, the recipes I can’t get enough of are a warm Honey Almond Milk Latte and a cold Toasted Coconut Nespresso.

Nespresso Machine | Glass | Livanto Capsules | Linizio Lungo Capsules

The toasted coconut recipe is beyond easy.  Over a glass full of ice simply add 2-3 chilled espressos, cold coconut milk, a drop or two of coconut syrup to slightly sweeten the Nespresso and top with fresh toasted coconut. This would also be amazing as a frozen drink, simply freeze Nespresso into ice cubes like I did here and blend away!

The Honey Almond Milk Latte combines fresh, local honey and frothed almond milk, for the perfect warm and toasty way to start the day.  I prefer mine with two shots of Nespresso and just love sprinkling just a touch of cinnamon on top for that extra bit of warmth.  And I suggest putting the honey in first, just covering the bottom of the cup.  As you add the hot Nespresso it will naturally begin to melt and blend the honey.

Nespresso takes no shortcuts in their process of creating the perfect pod.  As Nespresso says, “the path from bean to cup is a complex one.” Knowing that a single faulty coffee bean can taint a whole batch Nespresso takes control of the quality down to the very last bean.  Not to mention they source responsibly.

Focusing on sustainability of the coffee tree and coffee world in general.  To address the issue of coffee’s future Nespresso created the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program in 2003 in conjunction with the non-profit, Rainforest Alliance. This approach enables Nespresso to safeguard the future supply of the highest quality coffee, while paying farmers a higher income and protecting the natural environment. Win, win!

With all of this, it’s no surprise why I’ve been pressing that Nespresso button every morning for the past eight or so years.  I’ve shared both of these recipes below for you to give them a try at home.  Tell me, is a Nespresso machine on your holiday wish list?! Truly, MKR

P.S. Did you see their holiday pods? I’m definitely snagging their holiday coffee & chocolate assortment!
