‘The French Beauty Solution’ Changed My Outlook on Taking Care of My Skin

Beauty Questions Solved with The French Beauty Solution

I’ve been on a French kick recently.  Thanks to a few great reads, I’ve developed a fascination in all things French, and the differences between us as a culture and our habits, especially as women.  So naturally, next up on my #WOMBookClub list was The French Beauty Solution by Caudalie founder Mathilde Thomas.

I went into The French Beauty Solution prepared to learn.  I literally had a pen and a highlighter with me.  I was eager to understand how to take better care of my own skin.  We have all heard and seen that French women are effortlessly beautiful. They never hide behind makeup, and they always take care of their skin first and foremost.  Growing up in her parents’ Bordeaux vineyard, along with her 20+ years of scientific research with Caudalie, Mathilde knows her stuff.  Her philosophy about beauty throughout the entire book is downright inspiring.  She walks readers through how to eat like the French for a gorgeous glow from the inside out, clarification on how your skin ages, information on skincare ingredients, the good and the bad, and shares easy, affordable DIY recipes for at-home treatments and more.

For brevity’s sake, I can’t share EVERYTHING from the book, but I did want to share how I’ve taken some notes from the French beauty routine.  But be forewarned, you’ll read the book and probably want to run and order a dozen new skincare products, a lot from Caudalie, which, naturally, can add up FAST.  But as Mathilde points out, the best skincare isn’t always the most expensive.  She encourages readers to find what works best for them and their skin, and ultimately enjoy the pleasure of it all.   Cheers, Kat

For the French, their beauty routine is based on prevention and upkeep, and is regarded as an essential, ongoing investment.
They see it as a ritual, and a pleasurable ritual at that. French women live by “The Pleasure Principle,” meaning: your beauty routine should make you feel good at the same time it makes you look good.

Never, ever go to bed without taking all of your makeup off.
Avoid eye makeup remover with any kind of mineral oil; it can be very irritating and pore-clogging. Eye makeup remover should never sting or feel uncomfortable to use.  I currently use organic coconut oil and it works perfectly (even when I’ve had too many glasses of wine and/or feeling lazy before bed).

A good toner will not strip the skin of its natural oils, but instead perfect how you cleanse your skin.
Toner adds moisture to your skin and prepares it for your serum or moisturizer. It also just makes your skin feel so good!  I use this all-natural, incredibly affordable toner that has amazing reviews (and the rose petal version is a #1 best-seller on Amazon).

Exfoliate at least once a week.
If you don’t slough off the dead skin cells, they start to accumulate, causing your complexion to look dull and your pores to look larger. I now exfoliate my face with a gentle exfoliant scrub and charcoal sponge

Different moisturizers work better than others, depending on your age.
In your twenties, use an antioxidant moisturizer. In your thirties, use an antioxidant, anti-wrinkle moisturizer. In your forties, look for one that’s an antioxidant, anti-wrinkle and firming. In your fifties and beyond, use an all-in-one moisturizer containing antioxidants, is anti-wrinkle and firming, as well as brightens and evens skin tone. I currently use this moisturizing cream, which as insanely wonderful reviews wherever I look, as you can see here and here, it smells amazing and has done wonders for my skin’s texture in a very short time.

Don’t forget the eye cream.
The skin around your eyes is four times thinner than the rest of the skin on your face. By gently applying it in a full circle around your eye, not just the eyelids, you’re able to hydrate the skin, loading it up with antioxidants and other nutrients. And good news, this stuff lasts forever.

Apply products in order to be the most effective.
It matters what order you apply all of your beauty products (who knew?). But I guess it makes sense when you start to have more than a handful to use! In the morning, start with cleansing, then user a toner, apply a serum, moisturize, apply eye cream and protect your skin with an SPF (shoot for 20-50).

At night, remove makeup, cleanse with a gentle cleanser (I’m obsessed with this), use toner, exfoliate, apply a serum or facial oil, apply moisturizer and lastly, apply eye cream

It’s the most important to buy a terrific antioxidant moisturizer and serum.
If you’re trying to strategize which products will really get you the most bang for your buck, these two products will provide the most long-lasting benefits for your skin.  It was definitely a splurge for me to buy this moisturizing cream (I think it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a beauty product, ever), but after reading so many rave reviews, and reading about how important a rich moisturizer can be for my skin, I was sold.

As for serums, I haven’t tried this serum yet, but I’ve seen countless people post about how amazing it is…so it’s on my wish-list. But I currently use (and love) this brightening serum and this caffeinated firming serum in the morning.

There is no such thing as a “healthy” tan.
With each change in skin tone,  you’re damaging your skin’s collagen and elastin levels, as well as your cellular DNA.  And as we age, tan lines don’t fade as easily because your skin’s not as elastic as it used to be. As a response to this, it’s a good rule of thumb to wear an SPF 20 every day under your foundation, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and decolette.  Lastly, always look for an SPF that’s labeled as “broad spectrum” to help protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. I’m currently using this anti-wrinkle SPF 20 every day now.

Makeup should never be applied to bare skin.
First, apply either a hydrating SPF or a moisturizer.  It will serve as a proper base for foundation or concealer, and also act as a barrier between the makeup and the surface of your skin.

How I'm Addressing Signs of Aging, from the face to the neck and chest

If you’ve noticed on Snapchat, I can’t stop—well…noticing—the lines on my neck.  Sadly, I know they’re all there as a result of days of past under the sun with no protection, or worse yet with no protection and plenty of tanning oil (ewwwwww). And whenever I see those lines, I can’t help but think about how one’s neck is one of the first “giveaways” when talking about age…do you find that’s true too?  In doing a little research apparently, 70% of women say signs of aging on their neck are more noticeable than around their face, yet only 9% use anti-aging products specifically designed for this area.*

I’d like to think I’m religious about putting a daily SPF on my face by now, but I’m just as guilty as the rest for forgetting to protect my neck as well.  And with a whole what-feels-like-a-pantry-full stash of skincare products by my sink, it’s no wonder I forgot the SPF for so many years.  There’s a lot going on in my skincare routine!  Which brings me to how I recently tried RoC Skincare‘s answer to an all-in-one moisturizer that nourishes skin just as much as it protects it. Enter the MULTI CORREXION® 5 IN 1 Chest, Neck & Face Cream With SPF 30.

I’m pleased to report that this anti-aging cream has been gentle enough for even this sensitive skin of mine (and it smells divine).  I think one of the scary things about a lot of anti-aging products is that they’re actually pretty potent stuff.  Years ago, I wouldn’t have balked at that if the results were showing, but these days I find that my skin has become even more sensitive and really needs gentle products that won’t cause it to become blotchy or dried out.  Instead, the rich cream absorbs so nicely, which I imagine is my skin’s way of letting me know how badly it needed that added moisture and Vitamin E.  And recently, I’ve been talking about streamlining all of my routines, so the fact that I am able to use the MULTI CORREXION® cream on my chest, neck and face is key for me.

So my verdict?  Well I’m on week two and am already seeing great results, which is quite an impressive feat in my book.  Tell me, are you addressing sun damage on your chest and neck now, too?  Truly, MKR

5 Easy Ways We’re Getting Our Skin Swimsuit-Ready

Here's How to Ensure Your Skin is Ready for A Season in the Sun
Filed Under > Beauty & Tutorials

Pool season is officially here, and sure, we’re all working on our bikini bodies with some workout or another, but can we talk for a second about our skincare routines?  Just like winter, summer calls for a dedicated lineup of helpful products and potions to keep the skin looking healthy and glowing.

Of course, I’m no stranger to the art of exfoliation (I loveee a good body scrub, and I’m a new-found believer in dry brushing).  But as someone with dark hair, and as someone that feels like I’m a slave to shaving (especially in the summer), this post is extremely pertinent to me because I feel the burden of lots of maintenance before slipping into my swimsuit.  Nobody really talks about the nightmares that are ingrown hairs and razor burn, and at this point in my life, I honestly had just accepted that I would forever deal with the two.  But so you can understand my insane relief when I recently came across a few products that were complete game-changers for my summer skincare routine.

In the slideshow above, I’m sharing five ways to get your skin swimsuit-ready with affordable bikini skincare products that are safe and effective.  Let me know if you, too, have tried any of them and tell me if I should add some to the list!  Cheers, Kat

Exfoliate

Exfoliate

Proper exfoliation can slough off the dead skin cells clogging the skin, uncovering fresh, healthy skin below. It also allows for moisturizing products to be more effective, as they can actually get to your skin to do their magic. Our favorite way to exfoliate is with a dry brush in the morning, and in the shower two or three times a week with a body scrub.

Avoid Razor Burn

Avoid Razor Burn

Razor blades with 5+ blades actually do more bad than good (who knew?!). According to Oui Shave, a company dedicated to a better shave through beautiful skincare, "razors with multiple blades lift the hair with the first, and cut with the second, while the remainder rake over our skin and cut the hair below skin level. While this may immediately feel like a smooth shave, the end result is razor burn and ingrown hairs." Instead, opt for a high-quality razor with a single or double blade. I recently started using this razor and seriously have already had smoother legs than I thought possible at this point.

Set Aside the Yoga Pants

Set Aside the Yoga Pants

Sadly enough, your Lululemon yoga pants aren't great to be in for hours, everyday. Apparently, spending a lot of time in tight, stretchy clothing can wreak havoc on your skin, causing your hair follicles, especially on your upper legs and butt, to become infected. To avoid this happening, opt for airy, breathable cotton, and if you're already dealing with some breakouts, look for a body wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Say Goodbye to Ingrown Hairs

Say Goodbye to Ingrown Hairs

There's no denying how awful ingrown hairs can be (and lucky are you who haven't ever had to deal with them). But frequent exfoliation will help prevent ingrown hairs because it allows the razor to reach the root of the hair with each shave. But another secret to getting rid of ugly ingrown hairs is Oui Shave's Bikini Body Ingrown Relief Serum. It's an all natural solution that not only smoothes and soothes skin's texture, it also brighten areas darkened from years of shaving (think underarm and bikini line). I don't know about you, but as someone with dark hair that's become a slave to shaving, this serum is seriously what I've been waiting for and I am using it religiously these days.

Maintain a healthy summer glow by moisturizing skin regularly. Coconut oil serves as a great natural moisturizer, though it can become greasy when you're getting ready for a night out on the town. Consider One Love Organics' Gardenia + Tea serum or Beautycounter's Enrich Body Butter; they're both safe, nontoxic body moisturizers that work great and smell divine.
