X-benches (in leopard, no less!), ottomans and rattan stools. Moroccan poufs, Tini tables, lacquer shelving units and rolling bar carts. These are a few of my favorite things, friends. It’s really no surprise though, because I think of all of these versatile pieces as ones that “move” with your life. They’re the kind of pieces that come in handy for a little more surface, an extra seat and a major boost of style.
As you saw in this week’s One Room Challenge reveals (see part I and part II), I included several items that “play double-duty” as I like to call it. In the first few weeks of the project, I quickly realized that the quarters were tight and the were floor plans were unique. So, the perfect solution was to use these versatile furniture items, because small-space living should never mean you have to sacrifice style or comfort. But my favorite part? These items easily fit into life no matter the size or shape of the space that you call home. I mean, you can’t find me without my Tini tables at home these days. So check out my top ten picks of versatile furniture and decor pieces below, but then tell me which ones you’re eyeing for your own space! Truly, MKR
Shadow Gold Leaf Etagre with White Lacquer Shelves
This perfect little bar cart (under $100!) can be wheeled around the whole place in a pinch. Of course, I’d put a few necessities for the perfect libation on it. But as I shared here, I used it as a surface for a statement decor piece like this gold starburst statue. The best part? You can switch it up whenever you want!
This modern take on a trunk-turned-coffee table is perfect for small-space entertaining. The top and side opens up to reveal storage for all of your bottles and barware, making it super simple to serve a cocktail with no bar cart in sight.
I used these rattan side tables in this round’s One Room Challenge and couldn’t love them more. The room didn’t allow for a coffee table, so these tables were a great solution, offering just enough surface area when needed. And of course, they’re movable to be a foot rest, side table and even another seat!
This faux python console table is my go-to surface for styling an at-home bar (as seen here). The table’s size allows for room for all of the important stuff (a lamp, tray, books, and flowers), while still fitting quite nicely into the space. In this round’s One Room Challenge, I used the console table behind the sofa for additional surface area since we had to forgo a coffee table.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Oomph’s Tini Tables, as I introduced in my very first One Room Challenge final reveal. In fact, we teamed up with Oomph to create an exclusive WOM design this time last year. They’re a made-in-America, handmade piece that’s probably my favorite way to accessorize a room. While small and lightweight, they’re the perfect surface for your morning cup of coffee, reading material and of course, your glass of vino.
This x-shaped bench is a design I lean on time and time again when styling a room. The ottomans are incredibly versatile, being the perfect size as an extra seat, a foot rest, or an end table. Now I typically don’t play it safe when it comes to colors and prints (as seen here), but this option above is a great affordable pick for anyone.
I love me a moroccan leather pouf, especially when it’s gold. These versatile additions are designer favorites when an extra seat or final pop is needed. Try placing yours in the living room or even bedroom (seen here) to complete the room, and know that you can move it around whenever your heart desires!
As promised, we’re sharing the final reveal for our second apartment in this year’s One Room Challenge. While our space from Reveal One felt most like me now, this space feels most like me about five years ago. Fun, loud, un-apologetic, and full of show-stopping moments such as our custom banana leaf sectional, a bright cheetah headboard, and lots of deep orange velvet.
But before we can dive into the details of today, let’s do a quick recap again for those just joining us. As I shared yesterday, I set out to transform two model high end apartment units in the heart of Buckhead, one being a two-bedroom with a young couple in mind. Today’s space: a one bedroom apartment fit for a single, sassy girl boss.
While the install had a few complications like any typical design project, it was otherwise smooth sailing working with such a beautiful slate. Pulling together the large living space was perhaps the most difficult since it was just that…one big space. I needed to help future tenants visualize fitting the majority of their home into a undefined box. Which of course, meant defining each area: living, dining and office.
Starting with the living room, I went big with a custom banana leaf sectional sofa. The sofa allows great separation of the living/dining room, but because the sectional isn’t tall, it still allows for an open view of the entire space and makes everything feel spacious. I also chose to again forego a standard coffee table, and instead use two smaller, (moveable) tables. I talked a little about this in yesterday’s reveal as well; I like to incorporate pieces that can move with your life. By having two smaller side tables (here’s a similar option from Society Social) rather than one, you can scoot them around to reach guests at opposite ends of that large, glorious sofa. Lastly, the killer antique mirrored console table with statement stools topped with a smaller collage of framed art from Minted serves as a great piece to house books, the cutest little gold lamp, and most likely a necessary DVR.
Next, the floor to ceiling windows jut out, creating an enclave just large enough for a major desk and chair moment. The burl wood and brass desk and orange velvet chair that literally steal the show, become the perfect place for anyone to sit and pen their plans. I kept the desk‘s surface simple by placing a white and gold lamp and easy planted boxwood front and center. Just about anything would have looked amazing in the foreground of these views, but this combo is one of my personal favorites in the space.
For the final defining area we come to the dining room. A room, which if I’m playing favorites, might just be it. The table alone is EVERYTHING, and paired with these chairs and this abstract print it’s the perfect area to both read the morning paper and celebrate the happiest of gatherings. Rounding out the room is a small bar cart (obviously) and three orange velvet bar stools that tie together all three spaces.
Lastly, moving into the bedroom, I obviously didn’t hold back with bright, bold and beautiful girly prints. This custom made headboard plays so well with the colorful throw pillows, cozy throw blankets and the prettiest bedding from Pine Cone Hill. But the color crush doesn’t end at the bed; I brought the bold green to the bamboo dresser with this gorgeous green lacquer table lamp from Worlds Away.
And that my friends, wraps up our fourth ORC! Tell me, would you go bold in a space like this? I’d love to know in the comments below. And of course, in the meantime, I’m counting down until WOM’s next One Room Challenge. A big thanks to Linda, House Beautiful and all of the generous vendors for helping me achieve another design dream. Be sure to check out all of the product details in the credits below. Truly, MKR

The day of a final reveal in the One Room Challenge is always the best day! And in our case, and lucky for you, this year we’re stretching it into TWO full reveal days. It’s just really the only way to show you both spaces in all of their completed glory.
But first, let me back up; if you’ve been following along for the past six weeks, you’ll know I’ve made it my mission to transform two model apartment units in the center of bustling Buckhead. Of course, that has entailed an entirely different challenge than any of my former spaces, which were either rooms in my own home or the the WOM office (see ORC 1, ORC 2 and ORC 3). All of these spaces allowed for me to pull my signature go-big-or-go-home moves, whether that was with custom lighting and fixtures, paint or wallpaper.
While these apartments limited me in a few ways (they are rentals, after all!), they also had me starting with a bright, beautiful and clean slate. As you can see here, our first apartment was already stunning, with plenty of natural light and the most high end, modern fixtures (you can find “before” photos here). But even with the bumps, when you’re designing any space in just a few short weeks there are bound to be a few trials and tribulations along the way, (to get a full picture be sure to read Week 4‘s update if you haven’t yet).
All that being said, I’m absolutely thrilled how today’s space came together. I designed this two-bedroom apartment with a young couple in mind, and wanted to create an elevated, eclectic feel with of course, a gender-neutral palette. I stayed true to my favorite blue and whites with a few pops of color here an there and infused plenty of details and accents that are full of texture, interest and personality…I hate for a space to feel generic, safe and downright boring.
Looking to the separate spaces themselves, the living room had a very unique size and layout I had to work within. While seemingly difficult to design, I was able to work around both obstacles by utilizing versatile pieces that can pull double-duty when needed. For example, I rather than your traditional coffee table, which honestly wouldn’t have fit in the space, I used a table on wheels that can be moved out of the way when needed and can double as a fantastic bar cart when entertaining. Similarly, I turned to my go-to faux python console table, placed behind the custom sofa. The console table provides a place for a table lamp, can easily hold items you’d typically place on the coffee table, plus houses a basket full of additional pillows and throws (because you can never have too many).
While this apartment was a two bedroom unit, I opted to turn the second bedroom into an office. The campaign desk suits the space perfectly, allowing the rest of the room to comfortably have the custom Taylor Burke Home settee, the perfect chair and ottoman for reading, and the collection of art (all fun, affordable prints from Minted, plus some framed pom pom tassels which I just love). My hope was that while I chose to turn this space into an office, each possible future tenant could easily see this as either a bedroom or office, or even both if you get a pull out settee!
As we step into the bedroom, I can’t help but dote on the beautiful headboard from Noir, custom artwork by Blayne Macauley, and luxurious bedding from one of my favorites, Pine Cone Hill. I’ve always been a big advocate for great bedding. You spend so much time in bed, so why not make it a true oasis with the good stuff?! Actually, more on that to come; we’ll be sharing a complete how-to for properly dressing the bed here on the blog soon. Anyway, along with the fantastic bedding, because space was again an issue, I did away with your traditional nightstands which would have made the space feel too cramped and instead brought in a smaller side table and my favorite wall sconce to provide an always needed night light.
So that’s that. I’d love to know, what’s your favorite piece in today’s big reveal?! And stay tuned tomorrow for the second apartment in all its fabulous girly glory. Be sure to check out the credits below with all of the links to each piece pictured, and of course my other fellow participants’ final reveals today too; I know what I’ll be doing for the next few hours! Truly, MKR
