One Room Challenge: Week Two

Filed Under > Ideas & Inspiration

ORC-2

Week two of the One Room Challenge finds me carrying out a plan I actually set in motion over a year ago, the hanging of a gallery wall.  I’ve been collecting pieces, both new and old, for awhile now knowing they’d eventually find a home on the 16 x 12 foot wall a top my stairs.  This space will be the first time I’ve actually put together a large gallery wall, but I’ve been gathering inspiration, designer opinions and Pins for years now and through all of my research I’ve come to the conclusion that gallery walls fall into two distinct areas; completely uniform or a crazy-eclectic-collected mess.  I’m going for the later, a mix of prints, photographs, original commissions all in different frames, mixed with a few 3-d objects and even a little bit of lighting.  I’ve begun the process of blue taping everything out, but am not quite ready to begin, so in the interim I thought I’d share a glimpse into the art that’s inspiring my wall.  Truly, MKR

One Room Challenge: Week One

Filed Under > Ideas & Inspiration

Palm Beach Inspiration

If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge it goes a little something like this: Twenty designers/bloggers (listed below) have six weeks to completely transform any room of their choosing.  Each week, on Wednesdays, we’ll share our progress and hopefully provide a little insight and inspiration into just how the design process works.  For my last One Room Challenge, I chose to re-design my office (seen HERE), with my biggest hurdle being the time frame.  I tend to procrastinate.  This time I’ve chosen to design our upstairs loft.

I haven’t done much with our loft since we moved in two years ago.  It’s not the most inviting space with an awkward shape and absolutely zero natural light so I have my work cut out for me.  First step; inspiration.  Drawing from the colorful, and sometimes quirky vibe of palm beach I’ll be transforming our loft from dark and gloomy to warm and inviting.  There’s plans for a bar (obviously), a reading nook, and hopefully a spot for one of our favorite games, backgammon.

Truthfully I haven’t even begun so we’ll see how this all plays out, but in the mean time welcome to my second One Room Challenge.  I hope you love this new journey as much as you loved the previous.  And tell me, what room would you redecorate given the time?  Truly, MKR

A PIECE OF ART

A PIECE OF ART

INSTEAD OF A MIRROR, CONSIDER ADDING AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF ART OR A COLLECTION OF SMALLER PIECES OF ART AS THE FOCAL POINT. AND A BOLD WALL NEVER HURTS.

A GRAND RUG

A GRAND RUG

FOR A STRONG STATEMENT, GROUND THE DESIGN WITH A GRAND RUG. IF YOUR ENTRYWAY ISN'T A HIGH-TRAFFIC AREA, WE SUGGEST A BOLD OVER-DYED RUG. OTHERWISE, TRY AN INDOOR/OUTDOOR SISAL RUG THAT CAN HANDLE WEAR AND TEAR.

SOMETHING LIVING

SOMETHING LIVING

ADDING SOME GREENERY OR FRESH FLOWERS IS NEVER A BAD IDEA. CONSIDER A POTTED ORCHID OR SUCCULENTS, THOUGH FRESHLY-PICKED BLOOMS LIKE HYDRANGEAS AND PEONIES ARE ALWAYS GOOD IF YOU'RE STILL DEVELOPING YOUR GREEN THUMB.
