A Healthy Greek Salad with Spicy Shrimp, Avocado & Hummus Waiting On Martha A Healthy Greek Salad with Spicy Shrimp, Avocado & Hummus Waiting On Martha

Three cheers for an easy meal that’s fresh, healthy and clocks you under 30 minutes.  It was due time I shared the recipe for my healthy Greek salad with spicy shrimp, rainbow quinoa and avocado. Complete with some of the best Mediterranean flavors (cherry tomatoes, hummus, cucumber, arugula, lemon, oregano and garlic), it’s both a powerhouse lunch and a dinner entree that will be on high demand.  I love to add a pinch of cumin and cayenne for a kick (because #duh) and top with my favorite Greek salad dressing.

Of course, you’ll feel great about eating this salad. With plenty of fresh veggies, good fats and lean proteins, it will sustain you without slowing you down.  Instead of feta or another cheese, I opted to use hummus because it still gives you that irresistible creamy texture.  And if you’re looking to make this salad vegan, simply remove the shrimp and sub it for tofu (or nothing at all).  It lends itself to be a fantastic, easy lunch whenever I do so.

To serve, I love to plate the salad on a large platter.  But if you’ll notice in the pictures, I created four miniature salads on the platter, rather than mixing it all up.  This way, when serving themselves, each individual can grab the corner and get every ingredient perfectly proportioned without disrupting the others serving.  Everybody’s happy!  Enjoy!  Truly, MKR

Recharge: DIY Sage Smudge Stick

An Easy DIY to Purify and Cleanse the Air
Filed Under > Everyday

blog-diy-sage-smudge-stick

You may have seen a sage smudge stick before, and you may be wondering what on earth is all this woo-woo stuff on here today?!  I’m here to tell you that these simple DIY sage smudge sticks are my new favorite way to clear the energy in a room at home.  They’ve been used for centuries by the Native Americans for healing, meditation, protection and relaxation.  Sure, the first time you go around the house with a burning smudge stick you may cause a few eyebrows to raise.  But this easy, all natural and ancient tool to purify the air is a great way to “recharge” your space this month.

How does it work, you ask?  The burning sage is said to remove the air of negative energy and impurities.  You simply light the end of your sage smudge stick and let it burn until it smokes.  And when the fumes start to point in one, uniform direction, you can move onto a different room to “smudge” the air there too. Needless to say, the sage sticks also offer a calming herbal scent that is all natural, uplifting and utterly intoxicating.

You can make your own DIY sage smudge stick using bundles of both dried and fresh herbs and flowers. I found that it was easier (and prettier) to make mine with fresh ingredients this week as the stems and leaves were more pliable and bendable. Find a simple three-step tutorial to make your own DIY sage smudge sticks below!  Truly, MKR

Step One…Gather your ingredients. I used dried white sage, fresh lavender, fresh cedar (leftover from the holidays) and fresh rosemary.  The beauty of a DIY smudge stick is that you can add any herb or flower that you enjoy; fresh or dried.

Step Two…Next you’ll want to layer your herbs and flowers, with the bases/stems all at the same level.

Step Three…Simply bind it all together with cotton twine that is long enough to wrap around your bundle a few times. You’ll want to take care to wrap in stray stems to keep it all together as you criss cross the twine and tie it back at the base.

For best results, let your DIY smudge sage stick dry (upside down) for at least 2-3 weeks so that the herbs can properly dry out before burning.

Recharge: The Best Workout Clothes That Will Get You to the Gym

Because New Workout Gear 100% Helps
Filed Under > Dressing the Part

blog-the-best-workout-clothes

Breaking a sweat everyday can not only help you look great, it can help you truly “recharge” after an indulgent, perhaps way-too-stationery holiday season.  And as you’re motivating yourself to get to the gym, remember that there’s no denying the power of a new pair of yoga pants or a fancy new sports bra when you’re on the fence about getting up and doing it.  I’d go so far as to say there’s scientific proof that it helps you workout harder.  Surely it’s out there; I know it’s 100% true with my workout routine.

So if you’re looking for that extra boost this month to get to sweating, check out my picks for the best workout clothes below.  And if you need some workout inspo, see these five great workouts to try (you’ll quickly become as obsessed as I am) as well as these tips on how to stay motivated in your routine.  Good luck, and I’d love to hear how you stay motivated to get active this time of year!  Cheers, Kat

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 33

Nike, $99.95

Not only do they make a heck of a fashion statement in the gym, athletic shoes are obviously key points in your movement. It’s important to replace them on time, too, because you’ll then prevent injuries.  A good rule of thumb is that you should replace your sneakers about every 3-6 months, or every 300-500 running/walking miles and 45-60 hours of basketball, tennis, aerobics, etc.

I know I desperately need a new pair of kicks, and these Nike Air Zoom Pegasus are just the perfect ones.  They have incredible reviews on Zappos for both comfort and style, and price right under $100.

'Cozy to the Core' Sweater Jacket

Zella, $99

Shop Now >

This zip-up sweater jacket is cozy, warm and perfect for getting to-and-from the gym. I suffer from post-workout chills, and having a solid jacket after my body cools down is an absolute must for me. The drawstring collar and thumbholes are a few details that are much appreciated as soon as you try it on for yourself.

Racerback Sports Bra

ONZIE, $48

Shop Now >

Having a great sports bra is a no-brainer for a workout, especially for someone like me that needs the support. A strong sports bra can help prevent irreversible damage that can lead to “sagging” breast tissue.

But it’s difficult, I’m discovering, to find stylish sports bras with strappy, intriguing details that still give maximum support in the front. I’m a big fan of this brand ONZIE as well as Lorna Jane and Lululemon for producing sports bras that can take the impact.

Side Mesh & Contrast Panel Leggings

Beyond Yoga, $110 now $73.70

Shop Now >

I am always on the lookout for amazing new leggings, and I’d say my favorite brand is Beyond Yoga, hands down. They’re soft, moveable, incredibly flattering and well made.  Gone is the day when we think Lululemon is the only powerhouse brand for yoga pants, my friends.

This pair features mesh insets at the sides, and bold black contrast paneling.  The rest of the design has a stretchy space-dyed grey that is, dare I say, timeless in the gym?!

High/Low Jersey Muscle Tank

Beyond Yoga, $50

Shop Now >

Another good product by my favorite, Beyond Yoga, is the effortlessly cool (literally, it’s breathable) muscle tank. This muscle tank is super flattering and pretty much weightless when you’re doing a workout. I like to stick to wearing this one when I’m at a barre class due to the fit and shape.  And with other muscle tanks, I tie them in a small knot in the front when I’m doing a high-intensity workout.

'Active' Perforated Sports Bra

Commando, $68 now $40.80

Shop Now >

Here’s another supportive, yet stylish sports bra that’s a must-own (especially with its recent markdown price). It’s ideal for running, cardio-focused classes like Zumba, Barre3 and high intensity interval training.

Its “fine European microfiber” brings the much-needed superior stretch, yet covetable softness that we all want in a sports bra.  And the breathable perforations and racerback detailing are more plusses in my book, too.

High Waist Leggings

Beyond Yoga, $97

Shop Now >

I hope you’re not tired of my love for Beyond Yoga yet, because these are the best things on this list; the High Waist Leggings that put all of the rest of mine to shame.  They are incredibly flattering on the tush and thighs, and I literally live in them.

From Beyond Yoga: “…exceptional slip-free coverage and comfort thanks to a high, non-binding waistband. Moisture-wicking fabric dries quickly to keep you cool and comfortable, and smooth flatlock seams reduce uncomfortable chafing.”  Done and done.

TechLoom Pro Metallic Mesh Sneakers

Athletic Propulsion Labs, $160

Shop Now >

Perfect for the sneaker-freaker and chic gym-goer, these metallic mesh sneakers are great for running in style.  They feature TechLoom Pro’s signature lightweight mesh that offers ventilation and a dry fit. The second you put these puppies on, you’ll feel the comfort and stability that will inspire you to get moving, believe me.
