I could live without many of life’s little luxuries, fresh flowers however would not be one of them.  Flowers bring instant joy and life to a room and they make a house feel like a home.  And where there’s fresh flowers there must be vases. Currently I’m obsessed with quirky vases, or rather vases with personality.  Vases like these white and gold animals.  I mean you can’t look at these little guys and not be happy!  They’re perfect for holding just a few bright blooms (because lets face it fresh flowers can be expensive) and they make the perfect hostess gift.  Plus when they’re not brimming with peonies or tulips on your nightstand or coffee table they’ll look fabulous on your desk full of pens and pencils.  So Loves which animal are you most fond of?  truly, MKR

It isn’t a true barbecue without all of the traditional sides, everyone knows that.  And this year I kicked it up a notch with my take on homemade coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad and last but not least, skillet baked beans. And you know the funny thing about all of these side salads (besides the beans of course)?  They all use the same main ingredients: Veganiese/mayo, mustard and sugar.  Easy breezy.

We kicked off our barbecue week on Monday with the best ever grilled veggie burgers and peppercorn crusted beef burgers (which are to-die-for, if I do say so myself…well okay, I’m taking the Mr.’s word for it on the beef burgers). And yesterday, we shared a few of our top must-haves for anyone hosting the barbecue this Memorial Day weekend.  But today may be my favorite of all simply because I could live off of sides alone, and a barbecue always has THE BEST sides. 

The thing about all of these side salads is it’s really all about how you like it, and you can adjust the recipes accordingly to make them creamier/spicier/soupier/etc. truly making each one your own. For example I like my coleslaw like KFC‘s…(#noshame) nice and dressing loaded and my potato salad more on the mustardy side. 

And lastly, the only side that doesn’t include copious amounts of mayo…my skillet baked beans.  They’re just as divine as they sound.  There’s something about the sweet BBQ flavor alongside the tangy side salads that’s just second to none.  This year, I chose the the cast-iron skillet over the Big Green Egg rather than the oven, and being a vegetarian, I actually smoked the bacon and put it on the side for guests to add if they prefer.  I also changed up my recipe a bit this year by adding green peppers and onions, which I hadn’t done before.  But after reading and taste testing a few different recipes, I decided it was a great addition to an already winning recipe.

Almond Milk Matcha Tea Latte

A Dairy-Free Take on Enjoying Matcha Tea at Home

Matcha, the finely ground powder of green tea, is the star of today’s recipe, and a fast-new favorite ingredient of mine.  I’m sure you’ve seen it around the web and your Pinterest feed like I have.  With its vivid green color, strong aroma and high, grassy notes with a subtle, lingering sweetness, matcha has been served and prepared ceremoniously for centuries in China and Japan.  And while I’ve had it loads of time while out and about I’ve never, until now, began making it at home. In fact, matcha tea has become part of my weekly routine in latte form in the morning or mid-afternoon, but you can see just how new it all is to me since I whisked it in my cup rather than the bowl.

Matcha got my attention when I caught wind of its world of beneficial effects on the body.  As one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, I knew it was widely known for its power to give us a little healthy energy boost.  But thanks to Thrive Market, I recently learned that green tea can also help with cardiovascular problems, terminal illnesses and even bad breath!

But nutrition aside, perhaps my favorite part about making matcha tea is the ritual.  The simple art of making the tea requires you to take your time; there is no “instant” in matcha tea.  As opposed to regular tea where you steep the tea leaves in hot water, matcha tea requires a suspension of the powder in the hot water. You achieve this by whisking the loose powder with a chasen, or bamboo whisk, in a tea bowl known as a chawan.  A sifter will help break apart any clumps in the tea powder as you use the chashaku to carefully scoop the powder into the chawan.  If you’re like me, you’ll find these traditional parts of the process make the slow ritual of making matcha tea as relaxing as the drink is satisfying. 

You can drink matcha tea both warm and cold, by itself or with accompaniments like almond milk, half & half and honey or agave sweetener.  I prefer mine as a Matcha Tea Latte, thanks to Bon Appetit; enjoyed warm with a dash of almond milk, making the drink completely dairy-free.  As you’ll see in the recipe below, there’s room for a little experimenting on what flavor and temperature you prefer to enjoy yours at home. 

Lastly, upon my recent infatuation with all things matcha tea, I stumbled upon this great post that goes into further detail about the nutrition side of things, as well as the importance of storing your matcha tea carefully, as its sensitive to light and it’s actually quite delicate.
