Organizing your linen closet in 2016 via Waiting on Martha

As we shared on Thursday, this laundry room organization post was one of our most popular in 2015!  It only made sense to archive this oldie but goodie as we all switch gears into organization mode for the coming year.  With these few simple organization hacks, you’ll be well on your way to a more organized linen closet in 2016 (and I’ll cheers to that).

As MKR shared, the linen closet is one of her home’s biggest downfalls.  Located inside the guest bathroom, there’s really no hiding the chaos.  So her solution?  Baskets!  With a combination of both woven AND wire baskets, she created a space that’s just as appealing on the eye as it is functional.  The wire baskets work great for items more frequently used, like bath and beach towels.  The larger woven baskets work best for bedding, while the smaller woven baskets corral cleaning supplies, bathroom necessities and everything you need to cure a cough or bandage a wound.

Lastly, hand-written labels (by our talented girl, Jenn Gietzen) provide that extra dose of OCD-pretty.   Consider adding a few that even say “help yourself” so guests feel welcome to grab a towel or toothbrush.  Voila!  Easy linen closet organization complete.  How are you tidying up your space this year?  Cheers, Kat

10 Open Shelving Photos To Inspire You to Declutter, Edit & Organize

See Why We're Letting This White-Hot Design Trend Inspire Our Spring Cleaning
Filed Under > Ideas & Inspiration

Naturally, spring cleaning is on all of our minds right now here at WOM, and as we try to channel our inner Marie Kondo, we’re hoping to edit down our lives and organize everything once and for all.  And you know what?  I say that open shelving (even just looking at photos of it!) can help inspire you to do so. Now, now, before you roll your eyes, I can attest to the power of this personally; I completely overhauled my closet this week after seeing this photo alone. (Next step: order these.)

This idea of mine plays into the concept of taking better care of properly edited-down (read: consign or donate the unwanted stuff!) items, and displaying them for them to truly shine. This may sound silly, but I had an “ah ha” moment this week when I realized I could create the look of a clothing boutique in my own closet with all of the items I already own.  And in turn, I’ll take better care of the items I love, and hopefully throttle back on my current wish list. Win-win, right?

Whether you have open shelving in your kitchen, living room, bathroom, closet (you lucky ducks!) or not, I think you’ll agree that all ten of these photos in the slideshow above make a solid case for simplifying your stash to achieve a well organized and curated home.  And for the record, I don’t think the open shelving trend is going anywhere anytime soon, either.  A proper #shelfie is a fantastic way to showcase the very items that make your home a home.  Don’t be afraid of showing a little personality!

So what do you think about open shelving?  What organization projects do you hope to tackle this spring? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.  Cheers, Kat

Get clothing wrinkles out in a pinch

Get clothing wrinkles out in a pinch

I’ve heard people say putting your clothes in the shower while it’s steaming can help get wrinkles out (I’ve tried it; doesn’t work every time). BUT a trick that does work: put a damp washcloth or paper towel in the dryer with your wrinkled item. In 5-10 minutes, you’ll be wrinkle-free! If you’re too lazy to iron or pressed for time, you’ll enjoy these other lazy ways to remove wrinkles.

Clean your stove the right way

Clean your stove the right way

Contrary to logic, you should NEVER use the self-clean function to clean out your stove. Instead, a little baking soda, vinegar and elbow grease will help get your stove looking spick and span. You’ll want to make a baking soda and water paste, which then will be left in the oven overnight to coat the grease spots. After it’s sat overnight, you’ll wipe out the oven with a damp cloth and spray a little vinegar for any remaining baking soda residue. A final wipedown will have your oven looking beautiful once more! For more info, check out The Kitchn’s step-by-step tutorial.

Make a red wine stain disappear

Make a red wine stain disappear

I’m the person that completely panics when a red wine spill happens. I’ve recently learned that the key is to blot, NEVER RUB, and a generous amount of salt and boiling water will help make it disappear. The longer you wait to clean it up, the more likely it is to set. For more info, check out this list of home remedy options to try. And as a side note, my friend recently spilled red wine on a white dress and our DIY Thieves household cleaner got it right out too.

Remove germs from your sponges

Remove germs from your sponges

Microwaving a smelly sponge is one of the easiest ways to clean and deodorize it. Thanks to Reader’s Digest, we now know about this little life hack. First, pour a small amount of lemon juice into a bowl of water. Then, soak the sponge before putting it in the microwave on high for one minute.

Make your metals shine again

Make your metals shine again

Vintage brass objects are such fun finds to pick up while you’re antiquing, but they can be absolutely filthy and covered in tarnish. Luckily, it’s pretty simple to get the tarnish off with a mixture of lemon, baking soda and water. One of our favorites Emily Henderson shares a great tutorial here.
