On Sunday, you caught Day 1 of our 3-day road trip with Garden & Gun Magazine and the great state of South Carolina.  It was filled with some of Greenville’s tastiest of bites and a magical night’s stay at Hotel Domestique.  And while Day 1 was one for the books, as the sun rose in Traveler’s Rest we knew we had to keep movin’, so fueled by coffee and pancakes, the crew pressed onward.

We took a quick pit-stop in Camden to do a little antiquing and after scoring a few favorite records and a trinket or two, we got back on the road and continued to the tranquil shores of Pawleys Island, America’s oldest seaside community. In true low country fashion, Pawleys’ sleepy marshes and cypress-sided cottages proved to be just as endearing as imagined, and we were eager to settle in for a relaxed evening at the Pelican Inn

Pelican Inn, just 7o miles north of Charleston, turned out to be the most charming beachfront bed & breakfast.  Being built in the 1840’s, it’s one of the several original houses remaining on the island and its relaxed charm was undeniable. Nestled behind the island’s highest dunes and tucked beside mossy sprawling oak trees, the Inn is one of those places that reminds its guests to turn your iphone on silent, slow down and simply unwind.  The idyllic porch hammocks, private dock stretching over the salt marsh, well-loved rocking chairs and eclectic antiques beckoned us into a world of endless summer.

After touring our new digs, we hopped into the car to venture around Pawleys Island and grab a bite to eat.  A torrential rain shower had other plans, and we found ourselves running into Pawleys Island Tavern for frozen cocktails and oysters, because sometimes you just really need a good dive bar and a pina colada to round out a day on the road.

The rain showed no sign of passing, so sweaters and sweatshirts came on and we staked out a covered gazebo with a hammock by the shore.   We brought the jams (Taylor Swift obviously), easy bites and of course wine, and in that moment it was like time stood still.  No one felt the need to check their phones or snap a picture for Instagram, we just lived in that space.  And long after the sun set, we snuck back to our rooms, cracked our windows and fell asleep to salty air and a sweet lullaby of crashing waves on the shore. Truly, MKR

P.S. With one day left in our #TakingCarolina road trip adventure, we eagerly looked forward to Beaufort in all its moss-draped, Antebellum glory. Tune in Friday to read more! xo

Project Organization

This year one of my biggest resolutions is to get organized.  We’re talking an organized office/work space.  An organized (and simplified closet).  An organized kitchen.  Basically an organized life.  Though undoubtedly I make this resolution every year, it seems to have an urgency in 2014 that it hasn’t in the past.  There’s a need to bring order to the chaos of my day to day, and to truly simplify.

The easiest place to start was organizing my desk, my thoughts, and my daily routine.  For my desk I wanted it to hold just the every day necessities with plenty of open space to create.  With having a Shop that carries an obscenely beautiful amount of desk accessories and paper this task turned out to be harder than one would think.  However, with the technology in place (my Mac & Wacom tablet) and after lots of editing my desk top is now a clean, yet very “Mandy” space I actually enjoying working at (desk details below).

For my daily thoughts and business, while I take advantage of all that technology provides, nothing will ever take the place of paper.  There’s just something about physically checking off a box on my to do list that provides such satisfaction.  Anyway, the problem is I love planners, and binders, and everything that comes along with the idea behind organization and if allowed would have about 6 different ones.  But that’s really an exercise in futility as having too many spaces to collect my thoughts and plans actually disorganizes me rather than organizes me.  So I’ve broken it down to two…my Emily Ley Simplified Life Binder and my Whitney English Day Designer.

My Simplified Life Binder stores all of my large project plans, ideas for WOM, goals for the year, and my Lara Casey Power Sheets of course.  This is my big-picture-creative-juices-flowing-dream-big space.  My Whitney English Day Designer is my day to day go-to.  It’s where I pen my daily to do list and editorial calendar.  Other than that I have one large calendar in our butler’s pantry that marks things that both Anthony and I have going on with a black Sharpie for my plans and a blue Sharpie for his plans.

So that my Loves is how I run my life.  It may not be glamorous, but it works for me.  You can find all of the details below, plus links to the technology and apps that help me stay organized and run WOM.  And I’d love to hear in the comments section how you’re staying organized this year?   truly, MKR

My Trick To Taking A Moment of Calm During A Busy Day

My days are busy.  And a lot of times, I forget what day of the week it is!  It’s so easy to get wrapped up in deadlines, projects and deliverables that I feel time moves at warp speed.  I thrive on the hustle of it all though; being an entrepreneur and small business owner and the rollercoaster of running Waiting On Martha is a true thrill.   But as an entrepreneur, it’s impossible not to feel a slight wave of panic when I glance at my never-ending to-do list, and it’s easy to let myself feel drained after a slammed day.  So lately, I’ve really been consciously focusing on taking a breath throughout the day when I need a moment.  And along the way I’ve found a few “tricks” to help me make sure I’m taking those time outs when needed

Like many boss ladies out there, most of those “tricks” can be found in my hand bag.  I always have a pack or two of Orbit® White Peppermint gum, my phone with my favorite meditation app, two notepads/journals, a pen, and a few of my stress-relieving and motivational essential oils.  Funny combination, but these items all work together to help realign and center me.  Allowing me when my day gets a bit too hectic to take a much needed moment; a breath.

For example, there’s nothing better than before a big meeting to sit quietly.  I’ll set my meditation app for two minutes and pop a piece of Orbit White Peppermint gum.  You see I’ve always been a gum person, but the peppermint flavor specifically helps to cool and calm me, clearing away any brain fog I may be feeling.  Not to mention in my line of work with all the meetings and events I attend, fresh breath and keeping my teeth white are also an absolute must!

So next time you’re out and about and in need of a moment, grab some Orbit White Peppermint gum at your local Walgreens and just take a beat; breathe in and out and just let the cool calm sweep over you.  Truly, MKR
