Life As I Know It…Rav4 Inspired Weekend Away

When I was 16 I had big dreams of my first car, big dreams.  And all I wanted was a brand new Toyota Rav4 (I wasn’t high maintenance at all).  Long story short, I didn’t get the Rav4, however it has always held a special place in my teenage dreaming heart.  So when Southeast Toyota tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I’d like to go on an adventure in the Rav4 I jumped at the opportunity.  Since it’s an all new, redesigned bright and shiny Rav4 the thought process behind their big redesign is to simply inspire others, #rav4inspired.  And since I was in need of some major inspiration, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Hence the picture on the top right, that was the beginning of our weekend and you can see the pure joy in getting the heck out of town.

Anyway, we picked up the Rav4 (holy roomie and so chic! Major improvement there), and after a quick tutorial on all of it’s bells and whistles I had my iPhone synced (yes I did make a special weekend away playlist) and we were off!  First, we headed north to the lake to spend a few days out on the water and with all of our dock mates.  I know you all see me on this blog looking fancy, but the truth is I’m from Michigan (pure Michigan).  I grew up on the lake and in the woods (I was wearing heals in the woods probably, but they were the woods nonetheless).  So there’s something about the lake that puts me at immediate peace.  It allows me to get back to who I am at the heart of it.  And in this hustle and bustle, crazy world we live in, a little breathing room is a MUST.

After a few glorious days up north we then headed south to Serenbe.  Serenbe is the amazingly beautiful farm community out in the middle of nowhere.  And I say farm loosely as the farm is surrounded by gorgeous homes and fantastic restaurants.  After discovering all of Serenbe’s secret passages, feeding some goats, and jumping on some trampolines we settled in to the Inn for a little impromptu picnic.  I suppose it wasn’t really impromptu though as you can see the picnic basket, and ice bucket and blanket in the Rav4, but I like to think of it as a spur of the moment decision, so that’s what I’m going with.

Sadly, it was time to head back to the city, and the grind.  The weekend was amazing, and exactly what I needed.  Truly, I didn’t know how I would feel about the new Rav4 (as it held such a special place in my heart from younger days), but I was crazy impressed.  I’m trying to convince the hubs that this should be his next car.  Big thanks to Southeast Toyota, and make sure to check out the other bloggers #Rav4inspired adventures.  xo

This post was sponsored by Southeast Toyota, however all opinions are completely my own.

Atlanta Food & Wine Festival: Asian Inflection

A Magical Rooftop Dinner, with crafted details and simple settings

While Atlanta Food & Wine Festival‘s pop-up urban vineyard was show-stopping, the next night was just as magical.  With the help of the Lee brothers and Blooms of Dunwoody, we set an absolutely stunning Asian inspired dinner for the festival’s Connoisseur Dinner Series on the Loews Hotel rooftop.  The theme for the evening celebrated and explored the Asian influence on Southern food, and offered a multi-course meal with award-winning wine and cocktail pairings with each dish.  And just to walk you through the vision of our Asian inspired dinner: we were literally surrounded by a concrete, mirrored, glass jungle, and we then created a zen-like oasis with paper lanterns and live orchid garland hanging from a chuppah canopy made of live birch trees. #Swoon.

The setup, however, didn’t go off without a hitch (like most outdoor events, am I right?!). The rooftop proved to be incredibly windy (I mean WINDY) and we watched with panic in our eyes as the chuppah swayed from side to side with each new gust.  We quickly brought in sand bags and stabilized the canopy, but the wind was so strong that we all had to make an executive decision to bring the long dining tables inside for guests.

To my relief, the result was just as magical; guests enjoyed cocktail hour outside to then join along long dining tables in clean white linens stretched down the inside hall, adorned with simple votive candles and low, airy white florals snaking down the expanse of the table.

When recreating this event (on a smaller scale, I expect!), consider simple linens and monochromatic florals for an understated, yet elevated effect. And while big centerpieces are always beautiful, the short, square glass vases were the perfect vessels for the florals because they didn’t risk obstructing the view around the table. This is a great thing to keep in mind if you’re hoping for conversation to be flowing (just as much as the wine) at your dinner party. And of course, placing votive candles (the long-lasting ones!!!) is one of my favorite, easy and affordable ways to bring the magic by soft candlelight to any tabletop.  Truly, MKR

Athens Part I

Just an hour outside of Atlanta lies a city that feels a whole world away, Athens.  Best known as the home of the University of Georgia Bull Dawgs, but as I was about to quickly find out Athens is not just about Saturday football games.  Athens is a community, a tightly knit one at that.  Athens is a community filled with local proprietors that have been open for generations, food that rivals that of any metro market, emerging artists in every shape and form, and families where parents do the daily commute to Atlanta just to raise their children in a place they feel is home.  This I all knew from hearing friends speak passionately about the town, but I was excited to experience it for myself and see the things to do in Athens, Georgia.

First stop (per everyone’s suggestions on Instagram),  Last Resort.  A restaurant that has been serving locals for decades.  The food was fantastic and better yet cheap.  I noshed on a southwestern salad and the best grilled okra I’d had since being down south, Kathryn the grilled vegetable pasta a staple from her days as a Dawg.  We washed it all down with some rose of course and cake which was worth the hype.  A quick walk up the street we met Cheri and friends at Heery’s Closet to do a little shopping and attend the Empire State Finery trunk show.  From Tibi (a local Athens girl herself) to Tory, Joie and Theodosia I quickly understood why Heery’s was your best bet when it came to shopping local.  I snagged another ESF piece for my collection and even though the temperatures were in the 90’s I couldn’t resist this perfect Vince cashmere for fall.
