The One Room Challenge Week Five

a week full of both problems and progress
Filed Under > Living

Typically when week five of the One Room Challenge hits I’m running around finalizing one last project and grabbing everything I need to style and have my room shot for the big reveal.  But if you read last week’s post, then you know that this is not a typical ORC for me.  This ORC has been full of more challenges than all of the last five ORC’s put together.  Challenges that are both professional and personal, and have taught me the meaning of grace under fire.

So where do I stand for week five? Unfortunately it’s not pretty.  The two largest pieces of my room are still yet to be determined; the sectional and coffee table.  And I’ve still got custom draperies and benches hanging over my head. While all my gorgeous Stroheim fabric arrived on time, my upholster was OOO (out of office), so this morning I’ll be in his office praying he’ll be able to make a miracle happen.

The good news going into week five is that I was able to paint last week and thankfully Farrow & Ball’s All White was able to cover up my navy blue ceilings.  It took about four coats, but the room has been transformed perfectly to white and bright.  I also hung my Jonathan Adler chandy, laid down my Karastan rug, and had the hubs help me put together the bar cart.  So it’s not all doom and gloom over here.

I will be sharing some snaps on my Instagram Stories today of the pieces that have arrived and progress made so check them out there. And definitely read about all of my fellow ORC participants progress via their links below.  Fingers crossed their a bit farther along than me.  Thanks for following along, and fingers crossed next week brings a bit more to share.  Truly, MKR

P.S. This image is from my fourth ORC and is speaking to me today!

2016 Fall One Room Challenge: Week 3

How To Add Art To Your Home That's Anything But Boring
Filed Under > One Room Challenge

2016 Fall One Room Challenge

There’s nothing that makes a space quite like art.  It’s the easiest way to infuse personality and really make a space your own.  That’s why in all of my ORC’s and in all of my design, including my own home, there’s always an emphasis on art.  Which brings us to the focus this week.

Next week, I’ll begin to actually show you the space coming together, specifically the art, but this week I thought I’d share my art -focused design board, as well as a few tips that I always adhere to when bringing art into my life.

When talking, designing and buying art, I stick to a few rules.  Rule one: buy what you love.  Like wine, art is subjective, so unless your collecting or investing, then forget about if the art will lose its value, or if it’s well respected, or blah, blah blah.  If you love it, buy it.  End of story.

Rule two: always think three-dimensionally.  Art isn’t just something you frame; it’s African juju hats, baskets and skateboards (see my loft), it’s literally anything you can hang on the wall.  So add a bit of dimension and depth by thinking outside the frame.  Oh, and bonus points if you can fit a swing arm lamp or sconce into the mix.

Rule three: mix it up with frames and sizing.  With so many framing options now available (white, gold, wood, ghost, black) there’s no need to be basic.  Plus digital framing services make it easier than ever; I’m a big fan of Simply Framed.  Same goes with sizing; treat a gallery wall like a puzzle and mix in all shapes and sizes.

Now that you’ve heard my three rules of thumb when it comes to art installations, tell me…do you like to go bold on your walls? What 3-D details are you dying to try? Stay tuned for next week’s peek into the spaces, where I start to incorporate these pieces you see here.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Follow along on Snapchat tomorrow as I give you a few sneak peeks as I actually begin installing the art into the space.

The One Room Challenge 2016: Week Three

An Inspiring Workspace Made Easy with bxxlght

Friends, it’s all starting to come together and we’re officially at the half-way mark!  Every time I participate in The One Room Challenge, I know it’ll be a whirlwind and these six weeks are no different. I’m thrilled to see my original vision come to life from my mood board at the start of the challenge, and seriously am bursting in anticipation to share the rest of the space with you!

As you remember last week, I talked about how big the Waiting on Martha office space is…a whopping 900+ square feet which was about the size of my first studio apartment.  So in order to define this large room, I knew I wanted to tackle the space with several separate vignettes to offer the team proper places to brainstorm, gather and of course, hustle.

The first styled vignette, or moment as I called them in Week 2, is where you’ll be able to find me in major #GSD mode: my desk. It needed to be just as functional as beautiful, and with clean lines and warm details I feel I’ve achieved both. I settled on a great desk from AllModern, who, just a FYI, have SO many amazing (and affordable) modern desks like this one pictured.  My desk houses a few pretties like a hand-painted brushstroke lamp, leopard vase/pen cup and new personalized stationery, but is also large enough to work on projects without feeling cramped at all, and serving as the perfect clean surface for business meetings and beyond.

Of course, there’s no denying that the hero of this styled vignette is the light box.  The second I spotted it I knew it must be mine. I mean what better place to have this beauty than the team office with a few great words to live by?!  Naturally I went ahead and bought enough letters to be able to switch out one inspiring quote from the next (5 quotes in total to be exact).  And while the light box was a bit of an investment, it’s going to be around forever to offer a bit food for thought in the WOM offices and beyond.

But alas, with Week 3 here and gone, it’s officially crunch-time friends, and that means we’re on the home stretch until the big Final Reveal.  Stay tuned next week for a peak at another styled vignette (the entryway)…and in the meantime I’ll be busy styling what might just be my favorite ORC project yet!  Truly, MKR
