Chatting with the Talented Lady Behind These Bold, Vibrant Pieces

Chances are, you’ve seen some of these striking faces around the web. Done by talented Austin artist Hayley Mitchell, each of these bold, colorful pieces somehow seem to still tell a separate intriguing story. It’s easy to see how these works can be considered statement pieces in a home, and as you saw in our team office’s One Room Challenge Reveal, an original piece by Hayley simply steals the show. (And in my opinion, neutrals never looked farther from boring!)

Hayley sure knows the staying power of statement art in the home, which has a lot to do with why she loves collaborating with interior designers. But she also shared with us how knowing others find joy in her pieces is the ultimate reward.  Check out our full interview with the talented lady below, go peruse her current originals, and pop over to her Etsy shop to find her prints available for purchase.  Cheers, Kat

WOM: Describe your aesthetic in your own words.
KM: Vibrant and bold. I love a bright, colorful statement.

WOM: How would you say art plays a role in the design of a room?
KM: Art is like jewelry. It has the power to bring a room’s statement to fruition.

WOM: Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
KM: Everywhere! Everyday life, my kids, historical figures and various cultures around the world.

WOM: Who’s your girl crush and/or style icon?
KM: So many but Alice Temperly has my heart.

WOM: Tell us about the creative process for youHow often do you produce new pieces?
KM: I create new pieces daily. My creative process is a bit of a mess. I create and care for 3 little humans simultaneously. I take a very bohemian approach to motherhood and the creative process. All ideas start in my sketchbook. I sometimes pull from sketchbooks from years past.

WOM: Do you ever get attached to any specific pieces?
KM: Yes. I started an abstract series a year ago. I only created 5 pieces but I cannot part with any of them.

WOM: Tell us a little about your journey in pursuing your creative dreams. Had you always dreamed of being an artist? Have you hit hurdles along the way?
KM: Since childhood I’ve wanted to be an artist. At ACU I majored in graphic design. I took some time off from school to travel with my sister in Europe as she modeled. We lived near the Pompidou which was amazing. Wondering around alone in Paris was amazing but I realized my dreams of being forever single might not be for me. I met my husband Ben (from ATL) and married young (21) during the Recession and soon there after found out we were expecting. That bit of time was definitely a hurdle but it was very formative (both literally and figuratively). Within the next 3 years we had a total of 3 kids. Despite the challenges, it fostered a great amount of personal growth that inspired me to really purse my artistic career.

WOM: How has your work evolved over time?
KM: Yes and no. Most of my work (since childhood) have been faces and people.

WOM: Have you had any “pinch-me moments” or significant milestones that have helped solidify your name in the creative world?
KM: Honestly, the moments that mean the most to me are kind words from those that truly love and enjoy my work. That feedback is sunshine for the soul. Knowing that one of my pieces brings someone joy or comfort is everything.

WOM: What would your dream collaboration look like? Anyone you’re dying to team up with?
KM: I love working with interior designers! It would be a dream to work with Eddie Ross or Jonathan Adler.

WOM: Where can fans buy your beautiful work?
KM: My website: hayleymitchellart.com

5 Amazing 2016 Commencement Speeches & What We Can Learn From Them

Great Takeaways from Some of the Most Inspiring Speeches Given This Year
Filed Under > Everyday

I still remember sitting in the folding chair listening to my high school graduation commencement speech.  Sure, it was almost ten years ago (!), but when it’s delivered by former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell (and grandfather to one of my high school friends and fellow graduates)…you listen and take note.

Like any great commencement speech, General Powell inspired us with helpful, yet relatable anecdotes and simple takeaways that can be applied in everyday life.  He shared with us that he went off the college with a solid C average, and had little sense of direction.  But he soon found a sense of purpose when he joined the ROTC program in college, and then he gave it every single thing he had.  It’s apparent that his military career that followed reflects that very drive, as he persevered and dealt with failures by learning from them, rather than wasting time coming up with excuses for them.

I’m sure you’ve seen several 2016 commencement speeches go viral in the past few weeks, and for good reason.  If you haven’t taken the time to listen to any, I really suggest you carve out an hour this week to do so.  I started my week with a cup of coffee and started with Sheryl Sandberg’s speech, and it served as a great, simple reminder for me to change my outlook on several things.  Click on the image above to pan through the slideshow to watch the speeches and read my favorite takeaways we can all benefit from applying to our everyday.  Cheers, Kat

We’re Listening: Waiting on Martha Reader Survey

Waiting on Martha Reader Survey

To think that I’ve been with Waiting on Martha for three years (!) is pretty remarkable. I joined as a bright-eyed intern at five hours per week, and even from those early days I knew I was joining something to be reckoned with.  Mandy Kellogg Rye (or MKR as she signs and everyone lovingly refers to her on here) had been blogging for a little over a year by the time I jumped on board, and even then she had already begun to create a brand that captured beauty in the everyday and celebrated the details that could inspire.  I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at the time, but there was this electric energy in everything she did, and I knew that joining the WOM train would open up my world to an even better place.  It was apparent that MKR’s passion to share the best in entertaining, food & drink and interiors served a growing audience by the day, and I saw first-hand how we made waitingonmartha.com into an online destination for all of that and more.

Now, in our fourth year, waitingonmartha.com shares content across the board, ranging from beauty and fashion to entertaining, tablescapes and interiors.  And let’s not forget about travel, career advice and interviews on some of the best creatives in the biz.  As we look to the summer and beyond, our editorial calendar is as stacked as ever, and we’re eager to challenge ourselves to bring you even better, and possibly different, content than before.

We’re conducting a brief-ish survey for all of our readers to learn what’s working (and what’s not!) on waitingonmartha.com.  I say “brief-ish” because there are under 30 questions, (we’re all busy people here), but we’d really love for you to take your time and be honest with your answers.  Within the survey, you’ll find questions covering general usability, as well as editorial content and topics you wish to see more, or less of.  We have some big updates and projects in the pipeline, and we want to best serve you, our lovely readers and friends, because you help keep this crazy train going.  From all of us at WOM, thank you so much for being part of our world.  Cheers, Kat
