A few weeks ago the Mr. and I jumped on a plane and headed to the island of Turks and Caicos.  Our destination, a private sanctuary resort, Amanyara, housed in the middle of the clearest, turquoise waters I have ever laid my eyes upon.

Set on the island of Providenciales, Amanyara is a secluded haven embracing the untrammeled elements of the Caribbean. Bordering the pristine reefs of Northwest Point Marine National Park, acclaimed for some of the world’s best wall and reef diving, the resort draws its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’ and yara, the word for ‘place’ in the language of the Arawak Amerindians. And I couldn’t think of two words, peaceful place, to better describe Amanyara, and the island of Turks and Caicos.

Being in complete seclusion getting to Amanyara is an adventure in itself.  Though the resort is only 25 minutes away from the airport, those minutes are spent on coastal un paved back roads that rise to hills then quickly fall away to flat plain covered in nothing but native, untouched landscape.  During our entire drive we passed only one other car and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to asking Anthony more than once if he was sure GPS was leading us in the right direction.  However, with only one wrong turn we arrived at the resort a short 27 minutes later, greeted by what seemed like a small army of staff members with cool drinks in hand.  From that moment we knew Amanyara’s description of being a refuge wouldn’t be far from the truth.

Immediately you’re struck by Amanyara’s carefully though out architecture.  Each airy space designed to allow complete views of the next is both modern, but completely one with it’s surroundings.  The large reception pavilion opens onto a breathtaking central reflection pond surrounded by mahogany trees, framed on one side by the Library and Gallery, and the other side by the Restaurant and circular Bar.  The bar, a natural gathering spot, leads out to the main pool set on the edge of Turks and Caico’s turquoise waters.  A short walk down a stone path to the right lies a private, white sand beach, and to the left all glass pavilions are perched just above the ocean’s edge.  Our pavilion stretched out over a tranquil pond and like the rest of the resort, was tucked away providing complete privacy.  In the mornings we would open every wall of windows and enjoy breakfast, and at night we’d lay on the deck, listen to the complete and utter silence and gaze up at the stars.  After living in a city for so long you forget just how many stars can fill a night sky.

Time on the island just seemed to move slower, and for the first time in I don’t know how long I found myself with four glorious un planned days.  Days we filled with long leisurely strolls on the beach and plenty of swims in Turks’ crystal clear turquoise waters.  We unplugged, re connected, and recharged and when it was time to say goodbye I whimpered as I got on the plane destined to take me back to reality.  As I type I find I’m already yearning to escape and smell that tropical air and find a little bit of Amanyara peace again.  Tell me Loves, where are you planning to escape to next?  Truly, MKR

A Week on the Amalfi Coast

Photographer Kathryn McCrary Shares Scenes from Her Idyllic Vacation to the Vibrant Towns Along Italy's Prized Coast

A few months ago, our photographer friend Kathryn McCrary and her husband jetted to Italy, after dreaming about the Amalfi Coast for over three years. After receiving an unexpected flight voucher, the two decided to take the trip of their dreams to celebrate six years of marriage. (Swoon!)

While we followed along on Instagram, Kathryn and her husband toured Rome, hopped on the train to Salerno, and ferried into Positano to spend five dreamlike days enjoying the best bites and sites the charming coastal town had to offer.  Add a day-trip to Capri and sunset-hike along The Path of Gods, and the couple couldn’t have had more of a magical time.

“We knew we wanted one last taste of summer, and the beaches of Positano were the perfect location to celebrate and relax,” said Kathryn. “My favorite memory, however, was the boat ride back to Positano from our day trip to Capri. We were all drinking wine and the boat driver stopped to let everyone take a swim. The water was chilly, but jumping off the front of the boat into the deep and salty Mediterranean Sea was one of the most freeing feelings of my life.”

If our wanderlust was strong before, it was even more so after seeing Kathryn’s sweet scenes from her week along The Amalfi Coast! I then of course asked her the question we all were dying to know: what was your favorite thing you ate?!

“All of the food we ate was great (especially the gelato!), but my absolute favorite spot we went to was Franco’s Bar.  It is the new hip bar of the ultra luxurious hotel, Le Sirenuse.  The view at sunset was amazing and the atmosphere was unreal.”

P.S. We asked Kathryn if she’d change anything about the trip if she did it again. Her answer? Probably extend the trip by a few more days and stay two nights in Capri or possibly Amalfi. xo

Sugar n' Spice White Russian

The Best White Russian Recipe and a Nod to The Big Lebowski
Filed Under > Cocktail Hour

The best White Russian cocktail recipe, Waiting on MarthaThe best White Russian recipe, Waiting on Martha

When throwing our annual Holiday party, the Mr. only has one request.  White Russians.  Or rather a Caucasian as he and all his cronies (I’m talking to you Gaines) call it because they’re obsessed with The Big Lebowski.  But when I received a little package from Smirnoff containing their newest gem, Cinna-Sugar Twist Vodka, I decided to kick the standard up a notch and created a Sugar n’ Spice White Russian.  A combination of sugary spice and cinnamon which reminds me of all things wintery and warm.

Though our Sugar n’ Spice White Russian is sure to be a hit with the ladies it might be a tad on the sweet side for the gents.  My suggestion is to set up a White Russian DIY Station.  Display the necessary ingredients on the bar (or even on a side table close to the bar) and let your guest decide how sweet they want their Russian.  Cheers Loves!  truly, MKR

DIY White Russian Station:
  • Vodka
  • Cinnamon & Sugar Smirnoff Vodka
  • Kahlua
  • 1/2 and 1/2
  • Ice
  • Cinnamon Sticks or Cinnamon Spice
  • Spoons or Stir Sticks
  • Straws
  • Rocks Glasses (I used our Dwell Studio malachite ones above)
