By the time most of you read this I’ll be wheels up beginning day 1 of my 12 day wine county adventure with Ma(i)sonry and Orison Wines.  If you’re a regular reader of the blog then you’d know I’m a big (BIG) lover of wine so I couldn’t have been more thrilled when Orison and Maisonry wanted to collaborate on a best of Napa Valley piece.  I’ve been to Napa a few times, but I don’t think anything can rival what we have planned.  And while I can’t divulge too much as I’ll be sharing all of my thoughts when I get back I wanted to at least share a few what-to/how-to pack tips with y’all.  So without further ado, and before I’m 3 cabernets deep, my 5 favorite packing tips.  And fair warning…my Instagram feed will be nothing but California sunshine and grapes as far as the eye can see the next 2 weeks.  Cheers!  truly, MKR

No. 1 –  Garment racks are  your friends.  When I began styling I purchased a few rolling garment racks and now I could not imagine packing (or my every day) without them.  They’re great for planning outfits and corralling all of your items in one place.

No. 2 – It’s all about the mini.  When regulations changed and didn’t allow anything over 3.4 oz. carried on it made all of beauty begin creating products in a smaller/travel size which saves a TON of room when packing.  I mean nothing takes up more suitcase space than my every day 20+ oz. can of hairspray or hair volumizer!  So I now buy everything you can in the smaller size and keep them in my beauty bag so all I have to do is grab and go.  I even got my tanning lotion in a mini…how convenient is that?!  And if you’re only carrying on might I suggest storing everything in one of these to make security a breeze.

No. 3 – Expect the unexpected.  When traveling anything can happen; delays, lost luggage, bumps, etc., so best to be prepared.  If you’re checking luggage always carry on your must have beauty products, change of under garments, 1 change of clothing, a bathing suit (if you’re going somewhere beach like all you need is a bathing suit), a back up charger, and a comfortable pair of shoes (I travel everywhere with these in my purse).

No. 4 – Create an itinerary.  Wether it be in your Google calendar, printed out and in your purse, or set up in Outlook have an itinerary with all pertinent addresses and phone numbers (hotels, rental cars, restaurants, etc.) easily accessible.  And make sure any travel companions have a copy, as well as anyone back home that may need to get in touch with you in case of emergency.

No. 5 – Be in the moment.  I’ve lost a lot of peace, a lot of moments to trying to capture them or freeze them in time.  To being stuck to a plan.  To not being willing to take the unchartered path.  No more my Loves.  Traveling is all about the adventure.  And while yes you have to be planned, you have to be ready, you have to pose for those pics so you can record them forever you also have to be willing to throw it all away and go on the grand journey.  Because every day, wether it be on vacation or during your daily commute to work, is a day you’ll never get back so you might as well enjoy the ride.

5 Things to Know About Healing Crystals

In Case You Were Wondering What on Earth This is All About
Filed Under > Health & Wellness

I’m not going to lie, when I first heard that people were turning to crystals for healing powers, I thought it sounded a bit loony and sacrilegious.  I first heard about them via Snapchat thanks to author Kelly Oxford‘s recent obsession with them.  My initial stream of consciousness went a little like this this: “Those crystals are kinda pretty…but I won’t ever do that hippie stuff… I don’t need any more knick-knacks around my bedroom…wait, could they help me?!”

Curiosity got the best of me, and I decided I at least wanted to learn the basics about healing crystals.  I turned to some of my favorite wellness sites (Hello Glow, The Chalkboard Mag and Well+Good) to see what this craziness was all about.  A little research quickly taught me that healing crystals are simply used tools to help you meditate and channel your focus and energy on improving something in your life.  They can be applied to your diet and nutrition, your beauty routine, your work and even your love life.  You most certainly do not pray to them (#phew), and you pick the crystals you personally feel drawn to.  While I still haven’t decided if I’m going to buy some (it may still just be too willy-nilly for me), I must admit I am intrigued by the thought of this ancient wellness practice. I may just stick to the beauty products infused with ’em for now.  Here’s a list of more than a dozen crystal-infused beauty products.

So as a COMPLETE newbie to the healing crystals game, I’ve broken it down to five basic things you should know about them in the slideshow above.  And because I’m intrigued to know more, I’d love to hear it: do you use healing crystals??  Cheers, Kat

P.S. If you know someone who would be into it, check out Little Box of Rocks; it’s a great way to gift a few healing crystals to someone based on the occasion (and GP and Cameron Diaz have both apparently endorsed the brand).

Crystals have been used since ancient times to serve as a tool to quiet and train the mind in different ways. According to history, they have never taken the place of God.

I especially enjoyed how the ladies behind Energy Muse described the role that crystals play in a wellness practice. In this post they explain, "The mind is what controls us – until we are able to train ourselves, through methods like meditation, to no longer let it control us...Crystals are a tool to help you quiet your mind and bring you to this state of a connected center."

While all from the earth, different crystals can be applied to different areas and stresses in your life. Some basic crystals include: agate (helps ease anxiety and helps you detox), amethyst (promotes positive energy and relieves fatigue), carnelian (boosts creativity, courage and passion), citrine (helps focus and increases opportunity), fluorite (grounds you and protects you) and rose quartz (nurtures self-love and helps you connect deeper with others).
