The Perfect Holiday Batch Cocktail to Ring in the New Year

As promised when you saw a sneak peek on Instagram last week, I’m sharing the recipe for a delicious and easy batch cocktail to enjoy on New Year’s Eve: my Pear, Apple & Cranberry Sparkling Sangria.

Whether you’re sipping long before the ball drops, and/or well into the new year, this white sangria recipe hits just the spot.  It’s light, bubbly and refreshing, while having that lovely, wintry warmth thanks to whole cinnamon sticks and fresh rosemary sprigs from the herb garden.  My recipe calls for Pinot Grigio (here I’ve used one of my faves, Santa Margherita), which I’ve found marries the sweetness of the apple and pear and the tartness of the fresh cranberries and lemon to perfection.

And in terms of serving this gorgeous drink,  it’s safe to say that you can’t go wrong. The deep, ruby reds of the cranberries speak for themselves, but when the pristine slices of crisp apple and pear are added, the drink is truly tantalizing.  Thanks to my time with the Epting brothers in Athens this summer, I now have an appreciation for a great crystal collection—the definition of heirloom pieces—and I recently started my own collection that can be passed down from generation to generation.  This year’s batch of sangria looks truly stunning in my Waterford crystal punch bowl (which will also find its home on my bar cart as an ice bucket), allowing guests to serve themselves (with the most adorable holiday tongs) and see all of the gorgeous, sparkling contents afloat.  So tell me, Loves, how will you be toasting to the new year?  Truly, MKR

{MUST Eat} Alon’s Bakery & Market

I think we’ve had this discussion before so excuse the repetitiveness, but the BEST thing about moving to a new city is discovering all of the new food!  And last week my journey continued when I had the pleasure of attending a tasting at Alon’s Bakery and Market in Dunwoody.

Alon’s has been an Atlanta staple for 20 years delighting customers with a plethora of sweet treats, baked goods, wine, foodie gifts and so much more.  But Alon just installed a wood burning pizza oven that cranks out 11 different pies from scratch.  So what better way to break it in than to throw a little party.

The pies were nothing short of fantastic.  With classics like Margherita combining crushed tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil, and basil infused olive oil to the unexpected like anchovies with fried capers.  There’s literally a pie to please every discerning (or not so discerning) taste bud.  Shockingly my two favorites couldn’t have been more opposite; the habenero olive oil with Italian tuna and the Taleggio with fig balsamic, truffled honey and marcona almonds.  The Taleggio would be perfection paired with some good wine.

So yes, Alon’s will be making it on to my Atlanta MUST Eat list, and Alon can plan on seeing a lot of me in the near future.  A lot.  On a side note, sorry to all of you loves that don’t live in Atlanta, but as a takeaway we can all appreciate to always try new things.  Had I not, I wouldn’t have found my 2 fav new pizzas!  xoxo

10 of Our Favorite Southern Artists

From Abstracts to Flowers and Figure Studies...We're Lusting After It All By These Talented Artists
Filed Under > Worth Noting

Don’t you think discovering a new favorite artist is a lot like finding a great new song?  It’s those kind of new discoveries that I always want to sit back and simply revel in, while also containing the urge to share them with everyone I know.  I’ve been introduced to several amazing, new-to-me artists while working for Waiting on Martha over the past few years…and it’s pretty cool realizing that the majority of them can call the South home. (I may be a bit biased since moving nearly a decade ago, but I say the region’s beautiful surroundings have a lot to do with the great art that comes out of the place!)

From Atlanta to Austin to Charleston and beyond, I’ve rounded up a few of our favorite southern talents worth noting in the slideshow above. But like any list, this list is made to grow, and I’d love to add some of your favorites to our list of top southern artists.  Leave your recommendations in the comments below, and if you’re ready to bring a few of these beauties home (this one is calling my name), be sure to read these 5 things to consider before starting an art collection of your ownCheers, Kat

Sally King Benedict

Oh man, Sally King Benedict is a big team favorite. Her bright, fresh pieces always seem to steal the show in some of the most beautiful spaces we've pinned. While I'll forever lust after a piece from her "Faces" collection, her landscapes are almost too cute to handle!
Sally has also teamed up on several amazing collabs...we especially love the partnership with Lizzie Fortunato and Marysia Swim.

It's safe to say that Charleston artist Teil Duncan captures the sunny joy of being beachside...even for those of us who are far from Charleston's sandy shores. Teil's beaches and "nudies" are crazy-popular in the design world as well as the blogosphere...and for good reason.
