Transform your bathroom and #DIY paint your cabinets and trim. @waitingonmartha @behrpaint #spon

Yesterday’s reveal of my bold green bathroom makeover hopefully had you itching to dip the brush into the paint can and get started.  As you saw, paint is one of four easy and inexpensive ways to update and completely transform your bathroom.  And while I get that it can feel a bit daunting to go bold with your color choice, I hope hope you can see from yesterday’s collab with BEHR Paint that going bold with just the right color can be one of the best design decisions you make.

While painting walls is pretty straightforward, it’s the cabinetry and doors that can get a bit tricky.  So I’ve laid out a few easy steps I take whenever I’m tackling a paint project like this.  Check them out below, and tell me, do you have any home DIY projects you’re looking to tackle?  Truly, MKR

No. 1…Remove the cabinets from the hinges, as well as all of the knobs.  This step will make your life a lot easier when you go to sand the surface (which is a must-do). Skipping this step will give you a headache later, so it’s definitely worth your while. Be careful to keep track of all hardware as you do so, as you’ll need it to restore the cabinet doors to their hinges.

No. 2…Sand the entire area of the cabinet doors.  You’ll want to do this in order to sand down the edges and smooth out the entire surface for the new paint. Don’t go crazy with the sanding, just an easy smoothing of the surfaces will do.

No. 3…Start painting.  Generally, I use at least two coats of paint for cabinetry.  Cabinets and doors tend to chip easier than the rest of the room simply because the amount of natural use they get so wear and tear will show quickly.  I’ve found that two coats of paint cover the surface well, and I always keep a can of touch-up paint on hand for when nicks do happen.  And when painting with bold colors, I paint them all by hand.  You’ll really want to take your time with the blue painter’s tape to appropriately line the edges (check out this great blue painter’s tape how-to, or get your most OCD friend to help you here).  By focusing on perfection on this step, you’re less likely to run into any mess-ups you’ll have to fix later.  And one major tip I have for mess ups is to simply keep a small bucket with cold water next to me as I paint by hand.  Being able to act fast using cold water and either paper towels for small spots or a hand towels for larger areas allows you to fix any oops moments.

No. 4…Place cabinet doors back onto their hinges and secure. After the paint has completely dried (please do not rush the drying process), remove the blue painter’s tape and secure your cabinetry back in its place.

No. 5…Add statement making knobs to finish the look. Lastly, place your updated selection of knobs, or as I consider it jewelry, on the newly painted cabinets. I scored some stunning hardware, which compliments the paint color to perfection.

A Weekend in the English Countryside with Farrow & Ball

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting England for the launch of Farrow & Ball‘s latest (and I’d say most gorgeous) wallpaper line.  I had spent a few weeks in London and the surrounding English countryside before (in my college days), but I was eager to escape the Georgia heat and return, this time with fall in the air and design on my mind.  And F&B‘s invitation to celebrate its 70th anniversary gave me the perfect excuse to jump the pond.

With it’s unparalleled paint and beautiful wallpaper designs, F&B has always been an iconic brand and mainstay for us here in the design industry (and beyond).  So I was delighted at the opportunity to step into F&B‘s world and experience where it all began and learn just what makes Farrow & Ball truly the best of the best.

The history proved to be fascinating; F&B was founded in 1946 by John Farrow and Richard Ball, two true paint pioneers.  They met working at a local clay pit, then went on to build their first factory in Dorset.  From there, the brand began its bespoke offering of beautiful paints and a hand-crafted wallpaper line.  In the 60s, the duo sold the company to Norman Chappell (yes, THE Chappell of Chappell Green), and the company was moved to Wimborne, where it currently resides, and where my story begins.

Arriving to Heathrow, a bit jet lagged but excited, the Mr. and I quickly jumped in our car navigating the English roundabouts and wrong-side-of-the-road driving to arrive in Wimborne in just about two hours.  We walked around town, ate fish and chips, but called it an early evening as the next day I’d be joining F&B at the stunning Dean’s Court.

Dean’s Court, with a 1,300-year story, is a beautiful, traditional manor house that boasts gorgeous grounds and 13 acres that have been at the center of a rural English community for centuries. It’s even been in the same Hanham family for nearly 500 years, with the current Hanham descendants still living in it!  Fortunately for us, the estate is open to the public through tours and events, as well as through private weddings and events. During our morning at Dean’s Court, we noshed on scones, were introduced to F&B’s latest wallpaper line, and toured the manor, getting lost in its history.  I was immediately taken with the perfectly manicured lawns and the feeling like I was walking inside history at every step.

After a lovely lunch in town, we headed down the road to where the magic happens; Farrow & Ball headquarters.  We made lampshades with the gorgeous wallpaper, and watched F&B’s custom paint and wallpaper process.  A process that I was thoroughly fascinated by.  Hopefully you were following along on Snapchat and Instagram while I was there, because I shared behind-the-scenes footage of F&B’s process when creating its paint and hand-crafted wallpaper.  The paint process was top notch of course, but the wallpaper was truly mind blowing.  F&B hand-stamps all of its wallpaper, using just three colors.  The paper is first painted with F&B paint, then stamped with a traditional block and trough method (versus your typical ink printing).  Each print has texture to the touch, turning each wallpaper design into an individual work of art in that sense.  The result is simply breath taking.

I walked away from the trip appreciating the by-hand process and procedure behind everything that F&B makes.  While the brand periodically releases new paint and wallpaper collections with limited edition colors, you have to wait every two or three years!  If you remember Chappell Green, you’ll recall that it was an extremely stunning, extremely popular limited edition paint color.  I was crazy about the color when it was released, but grew worried that I couldn’t get it once it was pulled.  BUT what I learned on my trip was that F&B allows you to directly order previous selections through them with the serial number and color code.  So you can rest assured that you’ll always have access to your signature shade when needed years and years from now.  Talk about dedication to the craft and to the design!  Truly, MKR

Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins

A healthy, easy and delicious blueberry muffin recipe...yes it does exist!
Filed Under > Breakfast & Brunch

Easy, Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins

While I’m not a lover of breakfast per se, I am a lover of breakfast baked goods. Muffins, scones, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, and quick breads are my love language. I mean is there anything more satisfying than a warm muffin and a cup of strong coffee in the morning?

But out of all the baked goods, I love blueberry muffins the best.  It probably stems from growing up in Michigan. I have very fond memories of blueberry picking with my mother. We’d come home with buckets and buckets of fresh blueberries, my fingers stained blue from all the blueberries picked.

Most would get frozen to last through the year, but a few quarts would go into making her homemade blueberry pies and blueberry muffins. Two staples I would live on through the summer months.

However, as I’ve gotten older Mother Nature has played her cruel tricks and I’ve found I can’t eat my beloved pies and muffins with abandon like I used to. My cravings for both of these, of course, has not stopped which has sent me on a mission to find a healthier version of my two favorites.

For the pie, I’ve found the best thing to do is re-imagine my mother’s pie into a blueberry handpie. The smaller hand-pie size, which are easily freezable, prevents me from being found sitting on the sofa pie dish in-lap. Portion control is the key.

As far as the muffins are concerned, I’ve tested a few recipes throughout the years, but today’s recipe for Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins is by far the best.

Made with quick oats, chia seed, wheat flour, cinnamon, almond milk and plenty of fresh blueberries today’s Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins recipe is one you’ll definitely want to bookmark. Plus, it’s only 135 calories! Considering that the average blueberry muffin contains 425 calories I would say these muffins are already a winner!

And bonus, because they’re made with quick-oats they’re much denser and more filling than your standard muffin.  So I can have one for breakfast and feel full.  I even tried to eat two for breakfast the other day and I couldn’t finish the second one.

Easy, Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins

What I also love about these Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins is that you can double up the recipe and freeze the second batch. That way when you haven’t properly prepared breakfast you can just grab a muffin and go!

I can honestly say these muffins were incredibly easy to make and completely satisfying. I mean anytime you nail a from-scratch baking recipe on the first try they get classified as easy.  And as far as the statement of them being completely satisfying let me clarify.

Will any healthy-ish muffin ever taste as good as a true butter, sugar, flour, no-counting-calories muffin…no. Just no.  But, these Dairy Free Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins are delicious, and completely quell my craving for that no-abandon bakery muffin.

So trust me on this, pour yourself a cup of coffee and whip up a batch or two of these easy, and healthy-ish Dairy Free Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins this weekend. If you’re following on Bloglovin, click into the post to find the recipe and enjoy!  Truly, MKR
