Spicy Boiled Peanuts

An Addicting Southern Snack, Made Spicy the Rye Way
Filed Under > Appetizers & Sides

Spicy boiled peanuts recipe, Waiting on Martha

I’ve always loved peanuts. Buy me a bag at a baseball game and I’m a happy girl, even if it’s nowhere near the ninth inning. So when we moved to the South, I was introduced to boiled peanuts.  I honestly didn’t even know they were a thing!  The first time I tried them I thought they were gooey, maybe a bit slimy, seemed a lot like chickpeas and lastly, they needed more seasoning.  But even with that I also thought, man I love these!

So I recently set out to make my own stash of spicy boiled peanuts, and was thrilled to find just how easy it was.  And the hero to this story is definitely the crockpot.  You’ll simply slow-cook the unsalted, un-roasted, raw, in-the-shell peanuts in the crockpot all day with all of your seasonings (see below on my favorite mixture), tasting about halfway through and adjusting accordingly.

Speaking of seasonings, it should come to no surprise to you that I like my boiled peanuts with a little (read: a lot of) heat. With fresh jalapenos, full cloves of garlic, Old Bay, chili powder, smoked paprika and cayenne, you have yourself some spicy boiled peanuts the Rye way.

I’ve been known to stand over the crockpot and eat a few dozen spicy boiled peanuts on end, but I also pack up several helpings in glass mason jars to store them in the fridge (they make great snacks later). Just a word to the wise when storing: you’ll want to include some of the stock so they don’t dry out before they’re enjoyed.  Truly, MKR

Sweet & Spicy Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Here's What To Do With Those Leftover Pumpkin Seeds...A Great Recipe From The Archives
Filed Under > Appetizers & Sides

Sweet & Spicy Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

While staring at some tired-looking pumpkins on my mantel (or does it just appear that way because Halloween has past??), I remembered our super easy, super yummy recipe for both sweet and spicy toasted pumpkin seeds, and knew I had to pull it out of the archives to share today.  If you find yourself with a few pumpkins you’re tired of looking at, or simply want a recipe for a great festive snack with some pepitas, you’re in luck with this one.

MKR originally whipped up both batches while craving something with a mouth-on-fire and cinnamon-sweet effect.  And while the spicy version is definitely calling my name, having both options in front of you is nothing short of addicting…something you’ll quickly come to find out.  As you saw on MKR’s snapchat (username WAITINGONMARTHA) this week, she’s already whipped up her batch of both sweet and spicy.  Cheers, Kat

P.S.  These would make a lovely Mother’s Day gift!

How To: Succulent Arrangements

Ingredients
  1. Succulents of all different shapes and sizes
  2. Soil; gritty, sandy, and rocky soil only.
  3. Pots; any type of pot or container will work as long as there is a drainage hole.
Instructions
  1. Fill your pots 3/4 full with soil
  2. Remove succulents gently from containers tapping off access dirt. Arrange the succulents however you see fit.
  3. Add additional soil and gently pat around the arranged succulents.
  4. Water lightly (see below for watering instructions)
Notes
  1. Sunlight. You want your succulents to have sun, but not all day sun which is surprising as these plants are known as dessert plants. Things to look for; yellowing of color can mean too much sun or overwatering, but leaning towards the light source can mean not enough.
  2. Water. During the warmer months succulents go through their growing phase and should be watered once a week. Don't drown your arrangement with a cup of water, pour a little and wait until the dirt has completely absorbed the water, then repeat 1-2 times. When it cools down succulents enter their dormant phase and need much less water.
  3. Re-potting. Though it may not look like it succulents are growing and should be repotted once a year.
