By the time December rolls around, I’m usually knee-deep in the holiday crazy, and I find myself engulfed in my absolute busiest time of year.  Between the Shop and editorial shoots, I can usually be found frantically running around town with my head cut off.  So you can imagine my excitement at the opportunity to jet away for a warm Caribbean retreat.  To be completely honest I was a bit anxious at the idea of truly unplugging during the December madness, but Kat assured me that a girl’s trip and a little “island-time” living was exactly what we needed.

And after what turned out to be a mad-dash to the airport, during one of Atlanta’s worst traffic moments (we barely caught our flight thank you Mr. Good Samaritan for opening the gate for us!), Kat and I settled in for our three-hour flight to St. Thomas with the thought of sun on our backs, sand beneath our toes, and Painkillers in-hand.

For generations, people have made their way to Caneel Bay Resort for a luxurious, yet refreshingly simple getaway. Families and friends seek out, and always return, to this Caribbean destination to escape their daily hustle and instead drink in the relaxing, laid-back vibe on this quiet bay. It’s a place to truly unplug; no telephones or televisions can be found within the rooms.  But in its simplicity, lies what I consider true luxury; Caneel Bay‘s plush bathrobes and comfortable amenities gently reminded us to slow down and reset.

If Caneel Bay Resort is unfamiliar to you, don’t be surprised.  Caneel Bay may be one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, though the reviews speak for themselves.  What makes it truly unique is its claim to 170 acres of St. John’s vibrant and lush National Park, as well as seven seriously stunning, pristine beaches.  We couldn’t possibly narrow it down to a favorite beach—seeing as there’s a beach for every day—but we may have been partial to the ones where we caught sight of the sweet wild donkeys roaming and happily grazing. They were just too cute!

For all of you history buffs, Caneel Bay was discovered by none other than Laurance Rockefeller on a sailing trip, and the resort stays true to its promise of upholding Rockefeller’s dream to preserve the splendor of its natural setting. You truly have the feeling that you’re stumbling upon a hidden sanctuary, safe from tourist traps and high-rise hotels, a secret tucked in the Caribbean.  Our ocean-front views were idyllic, and the fact that our rooms were merely steps away from the water’s edge was a perk that simply could not be beat.  While the warm, friendly Caneel Bay Resort staff was happy to set us up with a slew of activities: oceanfront massages, diving expeditions, paddle boarding, snorkeling and sunset cruises, we spent most our our days relaxing in lounge chairs and just soaking it all in.

To say we had exquisite meals on our trip is a major understatement.  Atop the resort’s 18th-century sugar mill, Zozo’s restaurant and bar welcomed us with open arms on our first evening.  We shared delightful dishes while enjoying its stunning open-air perch that overlooked the entire resort.  But of course, we were then blown away by Chef Nicholas Arnold and his culinary team at Turtle Bay Estate House, taste testing and sipping through the evening with each bite and gulp better than the last.  And while the resort is where we spent most of our time we did wander through the streets of downtown St. John which embodied island life; happy, bright, and beyond welcoming.

Looking back through photos, I’m reminded how hard it is to into words just how stunning Caneel Bay Resort‘s crystal clear water really is.  It’s safe to say that we continued our love affair with blues on this vacation, studying the many shades of cerulean, aqua and sea foam floating timelessly…the way the water caught the sparkle of sunlight, and illuminated with such vibrant electricity during the 5 minute island rain showers…well it was something to behold.  And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better a rainbow appeared, but we didn’t need to search for the pot of gold, we had already found it.  Truly, MKR & Kat

Atlanta Food & Wine Festival: Powerful & Delicious

Easy Takeaways from an Elegant Event to Translate to Your Next Dinner Party

If you were following along on Snapchat and Instagram two weeks ago, you got an inside peek into one of the best southern events all year around, in my humble opinion: the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival.  While we were busy (literally, we styled and designed eight of the events during the fun-filled weekend), we agreed that it almost didn’t even feel like work as we saw the beautiful events come together.  And while we of course plan to share the whole weekend with you over the next week, we also wanted to provide a few ideas on how to recreate each look on a smaller, more dinner-party-for-four scale.

First up, the ‘Powerful & Delicious’ dinner.  The night celebrated nearly a hundred of the south’s female business and community leaders, and invited them to an evening to support some of the region’s top female food and beverage talent.  Naturally, I knew that this dinner had to be show-stopping.  And what better way to toast to these powerful women than with an elegant, and proper, southern supper?!

When planning to host and toast these ladies, I knew I wanted everything to be quintessentially southern.  Tables donned in rich, preppy navy and white stripes with the most gorgeous fresh magnolia stems, garlands, and foliage from the amazing Weston Farms in Raleigh, NC,, mint julep cups and blue & white chinoiserie bud vases (my all-time favorites and some I brought from home) full of flowers from Blooms of Dunwoody, and settings placed with a half a dozen glasses (it was Atlanta Food & WINE after all).

While this was certainly a grand evening and the perfect way to kick off The Festival, this spread has a few great takeaways worth applying to get the look at a dinner party at home, too. I think it’s safe to say that these tablescapes prove the power of great linens and lush florals.  But if you look closely, you’ll see I also added height to each table (something I think will always, ALWAYS bump your tablescape up a notch) with the garlands and propped signage. I then varied the heights by incorporating the shorter bud vases among the taller details.

Lastly, this event makes a strong case for pattern-play.  Too often, I see tablescapes playing it way too safe with linens and details (too matchy-matchy is boring!).  Here, I’ve brought in a chinoiserie print that effortlessly blends on top of the bold, vibrant stripes.  When mixing patterns and prints, the key is to stay in the same color family; in this case, blue and white.

But perhaps my favorite part of this southern dinner?  The details at each place setting!  We took this year’s festival theme, #KNOWTHESOUTH, to heart by creating fun, educational cards with southern quips, phrases and facts.  They not only furthered the southern theme, with a nod to even the most arguably defined phrase (“bless your heart”!), but they served as great conversation starters around the table and can easily be replicated at your next dinner party, or might I suggest a progressive supper?!  Truly, MKR

MKR’s Favorite Summer Beauty Buys

A mix of affordable and effective beauty products that I love right now
Filed Under > Beauty & Tutorials

2016-07-27_0011

I think it’s safe to say I’ve been on a bit of a beauty kick recently.  While always on the hunt for a few great, safe makeup and skincare staples, I have been especially eager to try and find the best summer beauty products that will help me get closer to that coveted dewy summer glow.  And in the past few weeks, I’ve discovered a high-low mix of beauty buys that have me looking forward to getting ready (and unwinding) more than EVER before…and yes, some can be found down the drugstore beauty aisle.  From detoxifying face masks to handmade scrubs, essential oils and all-natural (and totally affordable) lipstick, here’s what I think is the best summer beauty products  Truly, MKR

No. 1…Luxe Apothecary Coconut Flower Scrub.  Handcrafted here in Atlanta, this mixture is my go-to when I want a long soak in the tub. The coconut milk is super moisturizing, and the floral essential oils create the most heavenly smell.  Not to mention, the picture-perfect packaging had me at hello.

No. 2…Smith & Cult Plastic Beach Warrior Nail Polish.  While you’ve heard me gush over the entire Smith & Cult line of nail polishes and lip glosses before, I’ve turned to the punchy pink shade Plastic Beach for my summer mani.

No. 3…Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.  I saw this body cream and honestly just had to see what the fuss was all about (with these reviews, the stuff sounded like a miracle cream).  First of all, it smells amazing.  But most importantly, it’s a fast-absorbing moisturizer that claims to tighten and smooth skin.  I especially love how it doesn’t feel too heavy or goopy as a moisturizer on my skin…which is key during this current heat wave we’re in.  Since using it regularly on my legs, arms and torso, I can’t say I’ve noticed tighter skin, but I have noticed a more even, improved overall skin tone.

No 4…Nude Skincare Pro Genius Rescue Oil. I recently tried a few of this natural beauty brand’s products, and I’m a new big fan.  With a focus on all of the nutrients your skin needs (omegas, minerals, probiotics and antioxidants) each product helps you regain balance and fight signs of aging and stress.  I’ve applied the Pro Genius Rescue Oil at night and seen a huge improvement in my complexion.

No. 5…Revlon Colorburst Matte Lipbalm in “Shewy”. By now you’re no stranger to my signature pink pout, and when I find the perfect pink I have to stock up.  This is probably my favorite drugstore buy because it’s the best and brightest pink.  I’ve been impressed with its great pigment and moisture, and it doesn’t move for hours.

No. 6…Revive Bath & Body Peppermint, Rosemary & Lemon Loofah Soap.  This handmade loofah soap has become one of my favorite ways to exfoliate and keep my skin fresh this summer.  It’s made of plant-based oils, without all of those harmful chemicals, preservatives, parabens, or synthetics found in a lot of store-made soap. And I’ve found that it’s gentle enough for my sensitive skin.  My favorite part?  The soap is handmade by Atlanta small business Revive Bath & Body, and a portion of sales are donated to women exiting the trafficking trade here in Atlanta.

No. 7…Luxe Apothecary Good Night Essential Oil. Another must-have from the small Atlanta shop, this roll-on essential oil uses a soothing mix of sweet almond oil, lavender and chamomile to help you unwind.  I apply the Good Night oil to my temples and neck before bed to help quiet my busy, busy mind once I hit the pillow.

No. 8…Burt’s Bees Lipstick.  I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about trying a lipstick by Burt’s Bees.  I felt like all-natural lipstick would lack the pigment and lasting power of typical lipstick.  But the price was right, and I remembered that most of the brand’s products score relatively low on the Think Dirty toxicity scale. To my pleasant surprise, the lipstick held color and didn’t feel dry or cakey at all.  And in “Iced Iris”, it’s lightweight and subtle enough for everyday wear.

No. 9…L’Oreal Paris Detox & Brighten Pure Clay Mask.  I am always, always on the hunt for a mask that claims to even my skin tone, and I was intrigued by this drugstore buy.  It left my face feeling super-clean and refreshed.

No. 10…Caudalie Divine Oil. My favorite product to put on after a long day in the sun, Divine Oil is simply luxury in a bottle.  It smells amazing, has a subtle shimmer, and it absorbs quickly into sun-kissed skin.  It’s made up of grapeseed antioxidant polyphenols and it leaves my skin sooooo soft.

No. 11…L’Oreal Paris Exfoliate and Refine Pores Pure Clay Mask.  Well to be honest, I’m always on the hunt for any mask that exfoliates and improves my skin’s texture, too!  This mask got my attention in the drugstore aisle because it addresses large pores, while and improving the overall look and feel of the skin.  Yes please to all of the above.  xo
