When I heard about Caitlin Crosby’s charity The Giving Keys, and the story behind it, I was literally floored how one chance encounter and one act of kindness can literally change lives forever. The story goes a little something like this…
Caitlin met a homeless couple, Cera and Rob, one day on Hollywood Boulevard holding a sign that read “Ugly, Hungry & Homeless.” After falling in love with them and their story she decided to hire them to stamp the Giving Keys with inspiring words to be purchased by one individual and handed down to another in need of a little pick me up. All the proceeds from the keys would go to keeping Cera and Rob off the streets and once that goal was reached the extra money would go to shelters and transitional homes for the homeless. Within a couple of months Cera & Rob started making enough money to stay in a motel for a few months. Rob started taking GED classes and Cera got accepted into a transitional home which provided counseling and shelter while still working for The Giving Keys. Cera then got a job at the San Diego Zoo to save up more money and work towards her goal which of becoming a massage therapist. Rob took his GED and passed with all A’s, applied for college at LACC and is currently enrolled. Cera and Rob got their happy ending and are continuing to work for The Giving Keys alongside their other endeavors.
It was a simple encounter and an even simpler idea of Caitlin’s to “Pay It Forward.” One kind act can literally change thousands of lives. So the question is now that you know what will you do?
