Well today is the day, The Big Reveal for the One Room Challenge.  Over the past five weeks, you’ve watched my loft come together, and you’ve seen the colorful and quirky vibes that inspire the space.  Today, I couldn’t be more excited to show you the final product.

A cozy reading corner with a hanging rattan chair seemed like an obvious choice in the room.  Paired with white sheepskin rugs and my favorite gold pouf, the pieces created a separate and distinct sitting area still in view of all the gorgeous art.  And I love that I can easily pull my tini table away from the main seating to provide a place to set my wine and current reading materials.

The sofa upholstered in custom Steve Mckenzie’s loop fabric, which you caught a glimpse of last week, is grounded by a classic jute rug that lightens up the dark wood floors and brings the vibe back to casual.  Society Social’s python parson table in stone provides the perfect set up for our bar and the Cleo Bunching Tables work perfectly for the odd room size, while allowing space for books and personal items.  And because seating is limited my funky, marabou feathered poufs are ready to be put to use as additional seating or to pull up for a quick game of backgammon.

Finally, rounding out the room, and really putting the cherry on the sundae, is my gallery wall.  With 24 total pieces hung on one gigantic wall I mixed and matched 3d items such as a gold hand hook, skateboard, and sconce with classic photographs and one of a kind paintings from the likes of Gray Malin, Britt Bass, Minted, and Sally King Benedict to really give it a collected and personal feel.  Plus there’s room for the wall to grow and evolve as I continue to find and add new pieces.

Well my friends, that completes my second One Room Challenge (check out the past 5 weeks HERE).  The space may have turned out more Palm Springs than Palm Beach, but regardless, I hope you love my loft as much as I do, and I hope that it inspires you to be bold and have fun with design.  Life is too short to always play it safe.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Big thanks to Linda from Calling It Home for having me and for all of the people and brands that helped bring this room to life including: Rustic White, Steve McKenzies, Westside Custom Upholstery, Society Social, Minted, Oomph, AllModern, Britt Bass, Times Two Design, and Mark & Graham.

One Room Challenge Week Five

We’re in the One Room Challenge home stretch now, and dare I say I might actually pull this room together in time?  I wouldn’t have believed it had you asked me last week, but this week the stars have aligned.

First, my old sleeper sofa was made shiny and new with the help of Steve McKenzie’s stunning hand painted loop fabric and Desmond’s team over at Westside Custom Upholstery.  While available in various colors, the custom black loop on oyster white linen called to me, and I couldn’t be more over the moon with the results.  It has completely transformed the loft, and really brought in that fun, Palm Beach, just-a-tad-crazy vibe I was hoping for.  And I know patterns scare a lot of you, but I’m here to say that decorating is meant to be fun and remember fabrics can always be changed! But if you’re still not sold on upholstering a whole sofa, try adding a little pattern play in the form of an ottoman or chair.

The loft space is also very narrow which doesn’t leave much room for a coffee table or additional seating, but Society Social’s Cleo Bunching Tables stacked with books and personal items collected over time prove to be just the right size.  And a tini table from Oomph can easily be moved throughout the room and makes the perfect perch for a glass of wine.

Lastly, my lighting pieces from AllModern arrived.  The Tribeca Franklin Chandelier (pictured) is simple, modern, and extremely easy to install.  Plus the light it puts out is shocking, I can finally see and entertain upstairs.  The chandelier’s sister, the Tribeca Warren Sconce, has found a home in the middle of my soon-to-be-hung gallery wall, and will serve quite nicely both as art, while giving the wall dimension so not to look so flat.  And the Nur Mini has been hung in the hallway providing a consistent feel throughout the upstairs.

I’m still waiting on my jute rug, which will really ground the room and soften up the space because the current wood flooring makes everything just a tad too dark.  And I’ve got to tackle the gigantic gallery wall, which I’m dreading.  This will be the first large gallery wall I’ve hung, and I’m guessing it’ll take at least a day to measure each piece, mirror the desired look on to the floor, then mirror that look with blue tape on to the wall, and finish by banging nails and praying it all works out.  So please, if you’ve got any tips or tricks up your sleeve, I’m all ears!  Truly, MKR

One Room Challenge: Week Four

Filed Under > Ideas & Inspiration

Hanging rattan chair

Last week, you saw One Room Challenge progress in the form of my loft bar. This week, I’ve got nothing.  Between all of my recent travel, wrapping up a few major design client’s projects, and prepping for WOM The Brick & Mortar and our new office at ADAC, I haven’t even had a moment to hang a picture or style a coffee table.  And while I may not have any progress pictures to share, I have made a few behind-the-scene strides.  I dropped the sofa at the upholsterer to get reupholstered in a hand-painted loop brushstroke fabric from Steve McKenzies and I pulled the trigger on all of the lighting (here, here and here), plus I snagged a rug.  But since decisions were made late, and I haven’t received shipping notifications yet, I’ll be racing against the clock to finish this project on time (shocker).  But if there’s anyone who likes a race, it’s me, so I say, fire up the music and let’s go.  I only have an entire gallery wall to hang, lighting to install, a rug to lay down, furniture to arrange, a coffee table to style, and quaint-cozy-hanging-chair-reading nook to create.  Easy-breezy.  What personal design dilemmas have you run into lately?  Truly, MKR
