Travel hacks for your next flight, @waitingonmartha

Every time I come back from a trip, I feel an even stronger pang of wanderlust for more.  And while travel is always so rewarding, the trips can add up FAST.  Luckily there are plenty of travel hacks and tips out there to help lessen the damage to your back account…you just need to know how to work the system. Whether that’s taking full advantage of the best loyalty programs with the leading travel credit cards, finding last-minute (I mean last, last, last-minute) flight deals, or even scoring access to the airport lounge during a hellacious flight delay, there are ways to get the most bang for your buck and enjoy even more comforts while you’re on the go.

You may remember my 11 tips for traveling like a pro, but today I’m sharing five of my most recent tricks in the slideshow above.  Check out five easy travel hacks below, and get ready to say hello to smarter travel for your next trip!  What are your favorite travel hacks?  Cheers, Kat

No. 1…Score Access to the Airport Lounge. If you find yourself with a lot of time to kill thanks to a hellacious layover, cancellation or flight delay, consider checking out LoungeBuddy to see if it’s worth it to book one-day access to an airport lounge. The app partners with lounges in some of the busiest airports in the world, making exclusive members-only airport lounges a thing of the past.

No. 2…Choose the Right Travel Credit Card. The right travel credit card can offer fantastic benefits and rewards for your next trip. This list offers a comprehensive look at the pros and cons of the best options in 2016, and urges customers to look beyond the initial signup bonus to choose a card that works for them.

No. 3…Work the In-Flight Seating System. If you’re traveling with someone, and can select your seat assignments, book the aisle and window seats. You’ll then leave the middle seat open, which may deter someone from booking that seat at all (if the flight is not fully booked), thus leaving three seats at your disposal. If someone does book however, a simple request to switch seats can allow for you to sit with your travel partner as planned.

No. 4…Make Same-Day Changes. To most, the thought of changing your flight the day-of is either a) impossible, b) nerve-racking or c) unnecessary. But contrary to popular belief, same-day changes can be easy to do and can actually save you some money. By calling your airlines the day-of, you can inquire about cheaper reservations at different departure times. The change is free on airlines like Southwest and only $50 on other airlines to change the day of your flight.

No. 5…Land a Free Stopover (& Double Your Vacation). As many travelers discovered last year, creative planning can sometimes lend itself to a free stopover in an amazing destination (think Iceland, Casablanca, Istanbul, Sydney, Aukland and more). By landing a free stopover, you’ll be able to visit two cities on one ticket for almost the same price to fly directly to your destination. Though it does take a little research, it’s definitely worth the reward. You can find stopover information via search engines like this site.

I Tried Acupuncture For the First Time & Here’s What I Learned

My First Visit Proved It Won't Be My Last
Filed Under > Health & Wellness

I suffer from terrible tension headaches every month.  I also recently had a temporary lower back injury from a workout class gone wrong (I don’t want to talk about it).  But it was the headaches and the back pain, and my new curiosity about natural medicine and wellness, that prompted me to try acupuncture two weeks ago.

I have obviously seen buzz about acupuncture (especially in the beauty world) and I know some people swear by it.  I read this piece on the basics and then this piece on why you should ditch your derm for acupuncture sure got my attention.  But it was only after talking to a few friends at a recent happy hour that made me consider trying acupuncture myself. My friends shared their experiences of turning to acupuncture to treat their anxiety, back pain and migraines, so I knew it was finally time to try it for myself. Click through the slideshow to find out what I learned as a newbie (and new fan).  Cheers, Kat

It Doesn't Hurt

It Doesn't Hurt

The needles are nothing like hypodermic needles. They're extremely thin and solid, causing you to feel little to no sensation upon insertion. I felt a very faint and fleeting pinch from only one or two needles during my first acupuncture visit, and the acupuncturist was really helpful in explaining the process. Should any needles cause too much discomfort, they will simply remove the needle.

It's Not Invasive

It's Not Invasive

Contrary to what I imagined, and all of the images I've ever seen of acupuncture, it was not invasive. Meaning, I didn't have to take my clothes off. I scheduled an appointment at a local clinic and opted for "community acupuncture" which meant I was in a room with a handful of others. I stretched out on my recliner, put my eye mask on, and was (almost) lulled to sleep by the soothing music overhead.

It's Tailored To You

I appreciated the private consultation I had before sitting down for my first acupuncture session. I was able to share my current ailments and symptoms that I hoped to address with the acupuncture. I learned that the needles are placed strategically on different pressure points throughout the body, dependent on what healing responses you're hoping to achieve. Since I was interested in helping my back pain and hormonal headaches, I had several needles placed on my feet and some inside my wrists.

It Can Be Affordable

It Can Be Affordable

I had always assumed acupuncture would be something I wouldn't need or even afford if I had wanted to try it. Fortunately, there is a growing movement for affordable acupuncture throughout the country, and many clinics offer a "community" option along with their private sessions. I really appreciated being able to try acupuncture this way as a first-timer, and only paid $30.

The visit lasted a little over a half hour, and the entire experience was incredibly relaxing and soothing. Sure, the atmosphere was very zen, but I walked out of there feeling more balanced and appreciative that I could turn to an ancient, natural practice to help my body.

3 Days At The Southern C Summit + We’re Giving Away A Seat At Our June Social Media Intensive

A Recap of Another Amazing Southern C Summitt And A Chance To Win A Seat At Our Upcoming Social Media Intensive
Filed Under > Life Skills

2016-05-06_00112016-05-06_01702016-05-06_00832016-05-06_01072016-05-06_00302016-05-06_00982016-05-06_01682016-05-06_0153 2016-05-06_00472016-05-06_01692016-05-06_0099 2016-05-06_00322016-05-06_0171 2016-05-06_0008

We’re back from The Southern C Summit and feeling as re-energized as ever.  Like in previous years, I attended the engaging conference for creative entrepreneurs and left with ALL the feels. I walked away with a renewed sense of purpose, SO much excitement over seeing old friends and meeting new…and big plans for the next few months.  And of course, Charleston wooed me once again.  I don’t think I’ll ever, ever grow tired of Charleston’s soft, pretty pastels, its charming cobblestone streets and the cascading window boxes worthy of magazine covers.

I knew we were in for a treat with this year’s Summit lineup, but Cheri, Whitney & Team really blew us away this year. We set up camp at The American Theater and William Aiken House, both beautiful PPHG venues, for three days of informative and inspiring sessions with some of our favorites: Eddie Ross, Kimberley Schlegel Whitman, Libbie Summers, Chassity, Grace, LizCaroline, the Leapfrog PR ladies and so many more. The space was, of course, stunning thanks to Vine Garden Market, Beachview Event Rentals and BMA at Home.

During the week, we had the pleasure of dining next to friends new and old. Wednesday’s dinner by The Bad Bitches at Fritz Porter on Wednesday night was a magical evening, and a result of a true dream team. The fare from Grow Food Carolina was right up my alley: quintessential farm-to-table (I’m talking it was in the ground no more than 24 hours before our plates!) and the tablescape by Bellafare, Ooh Events and Peace Love Flowers with touches by Minted, Rebecca Atwood, Snowe Home and Suite One Studio was simply stunning. And Thursday night’s dinner at Tara Guerard‘s place…well it took my breath away. Tara showed us all how it’s done; setting the table for nearly 30 of us beneath the canopied light for a wonderful last night alongside some of the industry’s best.

I, of course, enjoyed a glass or two (or five) of wine Thursday evening with my keynote session on social media behind me…ha! But all jokes aside, Thursday’s session was fantastic; Kat live-Periscoped for everyone at home who couldn’t make it to Charleston for The Summit, and most importantly we announced our upcoming Social Media Intensive, which I absolutely cannot wait to host here in Atlanta in June.

After past requests we’ve been trying to figure out how we could make a social media intensive happen, so when the opportunity to team up with The Southern C came about it was a no brainer.  This all-day session at ADAC will be a deep-dive into the nitty-gritty of each social media platform with attendees being put to work (computers required) diving into each platform in real time.  With two different tailored tracks, attendees will leave with a notebook full of best practices, be able to ask questions pertinent to their brand and business, and will walk away with plenty of practical takeaways.  Since we’re keeping things intimate, seats are very limited, and if you haven’t already secured your spot you’ll want to do so ASAP.  And we hope you’ll be joining us the night before at Steve McKenzie’s for a fabulous cocktail hour…more details to come!

We’re releasing the last tickets to our readers here today, which can be bought here.  And because I’d love for everyone to have a chance of coming, we’re giving away one ticket in the widget below!  Truly, MKR

P.S. And if it could get any better…the next Summit is to be held on beautiful Sea Island in February 2017. Who’s coming?! xo
