Decadent food.  Meticulously-styled place settings.  Lush florals spanning the table.  All the makings of a wonderful tablescape.  It will come to you as no surprise when I say that setting the table for a special occasion is one of my absolute favorite things to do.

But the life that happens in between those special, planned occasions is what I consider to be the most authentic and cherished.  Those are the occasions I can be found enjoying the casual, and beautiful simplicity of entertaining.  Where the food is effortless, the wine is flowing, and my table is filled with favorite pieces like a collected blue and white pitcher, and a few new finds woven in.

For the next four weeks, join me as I team up with our friends at World Market to share easy, casual dining inspiration.  As you’ll see, simple recipes, curated place settings (and of course, good company), lend themselves to create the kind of gatherings that are both achievable and affordable. Hopefully you too will be inspired to get creative in tastefully mixing and matching old pieces with new.

Today’s spread, to me, is the perfect relaxed vibe for any day of the week.  With a cool California feel, and the help of new additions from World Market in the form of classic linen napkins, washed driftwood chargers, and the most perfectly imperfect ocean blue place settings I’ve ever spied I imagine sitting at this table in the hills of wine country, where I would most certainly stay a long long while.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Tune in next week as I share another table full of casual dining and entertaining inspiration and head over to World Market’s blog for more. xo

A Spring-Filled Table

Whether it’s a table for one or a table for ten, the number of people you’re hosting shouldn’t determine the pomp and circumstance that goes along with being a good host.  Case in point: a light, spring filled lunch I put together earlier this week for just my mother and me.

I set the table with my staples: rose gold silverware, fresh wild flowers representative of spring, and print-heavy jacquard linens.  I then added a few new friends in the form of bold, intricate place settings by Royal Crown Derby.  With blues and greys, to pinks, purples, and even chartreuse, the Royal Crown Derby pieces tied the entire table together with a cohesive look and feel.  And let’s be honest, there was no way I could have chosen just one of the colors; to the dismay of my husband I feel a new collection beginning to take shape!

We noshed on arugula salad, fresh herb and olive oil pasta, honey thyme lemonade with sugared blackberries, and of course plenty of Rose wine.  It was delicious, refreshing, and exactly the kind of afternoon that reminded me of why I moved to closer to my family.

We’ll be sharing the recipes later next week, but in the meantime, I hope you’re spending the weekend around a table—no matter how big or small—and hosting a meal for those you love.  Truly, MKR

P.S. Make sure you’re following both myself and Steve McKenzies on Instagram because we’re giving away a piece from my table to one lucky reader just for sharing a spring place setting you’re feeling inspired by. Snap a pic and share how you’re getting ready to entertain this spring by tagging @waitingonmartha & @stevemckenzies with hashtag #viewfromabove. You’ll be entered to win my favorite spring serving bowl, a $150 value. The winner will be chosen at random on Monday, April 13.

On a day where fall was saying goodbye and winter hello we trekked over the river and through the Atlanta History Center’s woods to a Woodland Wonderland created just for Rue Magazine’s Holiday issue.

With a pristine log cabin providing the ideal backdrop it wasn’t hard to bring my vision to life.  The table was overflowing with sugared fruits and holiday florals flanked by giant candelabras.  Hand cut place cards laid perfectly on Juliska’s Country Estate dinnerware, and gold flatware and glasses provided just a touch of sparkle.  And after dinner guests retreated to the cabin getting cozy by the fire and noshing on wintery cake, pumpkin creme brûlée, coffee, and a whiskey or two.

With everything falling right into place it all was nothing short of magical.  I’ll be sharing all of the recipes from HomeSpun Atlanta over the next few weeks, but for know just snuggle up and enjoy our Woodland Wonderland and a Very Merry Rue.  Truly, MKR
