Easy Apple, Citrus & Cinnamon Stovetop Potpourri

An easy way to fill your home with the smells of the season

Stovetop Potpourri, Waiting On Martha

If you’re a Pinterest addict like me then I’m sure you’ve seen the dozens of pins boasting large pots of seasonal goodness that is stovetop potpourri.

I hadn’t thought of making any DIY potpourri myself because I’m an avid candle lighter and essential oil diffuser.  But recently when faced with an over abundance of fruits that would likely spoil if not used I decided to give it a whirl.  And I’ve got to say, I was impressed.

Easier than easy, stovetop potpourri is basically a giant diffuser filling your home full of whatever citrus, herbs, spices and possibly even vegetable smells you choose to use.  Based on what was in my refrigerator and pantry, I decided to go with a harvest-esq potpourri vibe combining crisp granny-smith apples, grapefruit, lemon, orange, cinnamon sticks, and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary from my garden.

After the potpourri began whirling I noticed it wasn’t quite hitting all the fall fragrance notes I had hoped so I grabbed my favorite essential oils to lend a hand.  By adding just a few drops of clove, cinnamon bark, lemon, orange, and rosemary we were now officially in business.  I mean, the smell…I can’t even begin to explain how wonderful, and festive, stovetop potpourri is!  I’ll definitely be making this before entertaining guests this season.

I’ve included the recipe below, but feel free to mix up the ingredients and play around with the recipe.  I do highly suggest adding in some essential oils though if you have them.  Not only do the essential oils really amp up the smell, they also allow you not to have to add as much of each ingredient which in turn saves money. Cinnamon sticks aren’t cheap people!  Enjoy! Truly, MKR

P.S. If you don’t have any essential oils my question is why not? Read about why I love them HERE and check out the other ways I’ve used them HERE, HERE and HERE.

The perfect ending to any meal

What do you get when you combine two of my absolute favorite foods, coffee and ice cream? Cafe Affogato.  What’s the only way to make Affogato more perfect than it already is?  Add booze.

If that sounds about right to you, then let me introduce you to my take on this classic dessert;  Boozy Salted Caramel Affogato.  Or rather an ice cream sundae all grown up.

Traditionally, affogato is a coffee-based dessert, with a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream “drowned” in hot espresso.  Drowned because Affogato quite literally means “drowned” in Italian, and it sums up the wonderful molten mix of vanilla, coffee and the “puddle” that it makes together.

For me it’s the perfect way to end any evening.  Of course it wouldn’t be my favorite without just a touch of booze and Jackson Morgan Salted Caramel Southern Cream seemed like Affogato’s perfect compliment. It’s almost as if the Salted Caramel Cream was created solely for this dessert.

I always have every Jackson Morgan Southern Cream flavors on hand because I’m constantly reaching for them when it comes to baking not just cocktailing.  Remember my Boozy Chocolate Peppermint Bread Pudding from last year.   But it wasn’t till recently that I thought of adding it to my Affogato.

The Salted Caramel melts seamlessly into the vanilla ice cream and Nespresso resulting in the most delicious Affogato puddle possible.  And just to take it over the edge I added pumpkin seeds and fresh cinnamon to provide that seasonal crunch.

So to review: 1/2 cup Jackson Morgan Salted Caramel Souther Cream, 1 scoop of gelato or vanilla ice cream, 1 shot of piping hot of espresso poured over the ice cream, top with pumpkin seeds and a sprinkling of cinnamon.  Serve immediately and enjoy your caramel Affogato puddle.  Truly, MKR

The One Room Challenge, Week Three

An honest look into why this might be the first one room challenge I can't complete on time

Well it’s officially the half way point of the ORC and today I’ve got nothing for you.  Not a photograph, not a product to share, not a piece of fabric, nada.  To say I’m behind the eight ball would be an understatement.

Now, this is the fifth One Room Challenge I’ve participated in, and I’m always a tad behind.  But this is the first time I’m actually fearful of not being able to pull the ORC off.  I’ve completely lost the past 7 days because of a sinus infection and emergency dental surgery, which by the way is not yet resolved with a second surgery scheduled for next week.  And in looking at the calendar I just realized I’m out of town for my besties wedding the week before the big reveal which is when I always have my ORC space’s photographed. So in reality instead of three more weeks to complete the space I actually only have two. Picture me hyperventilating as I type this.

With this even tighter time crunch the two most concerning areas are fabric choices and the sectional.  I just picked out fabric today and I needed it to arrive like yesterday.  Prayers that the fabric gets here lightning fast and the upholster can work some speedy magic.   As far as the sectional of choice goes, last week I talked in depth about how hard sectionals are to come by and if this one doesn’t work then I’m not sure what I’ll do.

Oh, and just for one more twist I decided to nix the grass cloth.  As much as I LOVE grass cloth we’re planning on putting the house up for sale next year so I thought it best not to wallpaper this room since so much of my home is already wallpapered.  Which means I need to paint the entire living room and ceiling in Farrow and Ball’s All White; so that will be fun.

Yep, that’s what I got.  And since I don’t have any photographic evidence of me sitting in a panic I thought I’d share a few while living room inspiration pics.  As mentioned previously, the goal is to transform this room into a neutral, calming space.  Hopefully.  Which surprisingly, when you search for neutral, or white living room inspiration it’s actually tougher to find than you may think.  So many all white rooms are too modern, too romantic, too beachy, or too shabby chic.  I’m going for more of a California cool vibe…not boho, more California traditional.  Is that a thing? Ha!

Hope my other co-participants are a bit farther along then I am! Truly, MKR
