5 Things You Actually Don’t Need When Hosting a Dinner Party

Practical Entertaining Tips from Amanda S. Gluck of Fashionable Hostess

When I think about throwing a dinner party for friends, it sounds pretty overwhelming.  But not because the desire to host and entertain isn’t there. It’s the opposite case; I recently kicked off a monthly supper club with my friends, and together we’re slowly navigating the casual dinner party waters.  It only took us a month or two to find that timing the dishes’ cook times, setting a beautiful table and not being stressed out the ENTIRE time comes with lots of experience.

It’s easy to find stunning tabletops, inspiring centerpieces and gorgeous bar carts these days, thanks to Pinterest and Instagram.  It’s easy to find checklists of anything and everything you should have on-hand when hosting your picture-perfect dinner party.  But while those checklists are helpful, the reality is that you won’t always have ALL of the so-called “essentials”, (and you won’t always want to go out and get them).

That’s why I tapped entertaining guru Amanda Gluck of Fashionable Hostess for a little practical entertaining advice for us here today.  Amanda makes it look SO easy to pull together pin-worthy spreads, so she was my go-to gal for some solid insider advice.  Instead of having her share everything you DO need when hosting a casual dinner party, I invited her to share the five things you can actually do away with.  Whether you have a lot of entertaining experience or not (*raises hand*), I think you’ll find this list helpful when planning your next get-together. Cheers, Kat

No. 1…A full set of silverware. A fork and knife will suffice, especially if you are eating casual. Make dessert finger-friendly, like cookies or brownies so you don’t need dessert plates or forks!

No…2. Place cards. While for large parties it’s great to assign seats so people will mingle, keep small parties casual and let people sit where they choose.

No. 3…A table cloth. I often times use placemats, or even just chargers and plates!

No. 4….Multiple courses. When I get together with friends or family, I put out all the food on on my buffet in my dining room with serving pieces and all at once everyone gets up and eats! I always encourage people to get up and take seconds too!

No. 5…You don’t need to do everything! Ask one guest to be in charge of dessert, another to bring a fruit salad, another to bring wine. You would be surprised but people love helping out!

How to Make Your Home Holiday Ready

Keeping Things Fresh This Holiday Season with Febreze

There’s no denying that Christmas is one of my all-time favorite holidays.  Cozied up with loved ones in cabin socks next to the Christmas tree, sipping mulled wine while watching Home Alone?  That’s my definition of an “entertaining” holiday season.

But along with that cozy picture I just painted comes a lot of additional holiday hosting duties.  And the truth is, hosting during this time of year can quickly become a little chaotic and even quite stressful. In the Rye household, it usually consists of a few holiday dinner parties, several out-of-town houseguests and a kitchen full of dirty dishes after Christmas morning brunch.  And all that chaos, while lovely, can leave my home in need of a little refresh. Think full guest bedrooms (and bathrooms), the smell of holiday recipes lingering for hours after we’re full, and wine stains on just about every surface…you get the picture.

So long before guests arrive, and long after they’ve left, I prepare by festively spritzing the heck out of my home.  As you’ve seen on Snapchat, Addy loves to lounge on our designer pillows and just about every bed in the house, so those of course all need a quick spray before guests arrive.  And since we always have an artificial tree, we miss the smell that comes along with having a real one.  Needless to say, I did a little happy dance when I found Febreze’s Jolly Pine Air Effects spray to get us that whiff of pine I love so much.  I also find the Cranberry Cheer to be helpful in the kitchen when all I want to do is join everyone on the sofa after dinner (the dishes may or may not wait until the morning…). And without question, I make sure to have the original spray and plug-ins in those high-traffic areas.  A little spritz here, a little spritz there…and the entire place feels clean, yet festive.  When preparing for houseguests, these thoughtful details that are sure to keep everyone comfy and me sane this season.   Truly, MKR

P.S.  Our friends at Febreze take holiday entertaining sans smells seriously just like us. And for all of you fellow Glee fans, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison put it quite perfectly in a nice little parody on the truths of having holiday houseguests and the 12 stinks of Christmas…a vid that will sure make you smile.  And we’re giving away a prize pack full of goodies to keep the 12 stinks away!  Head over to Facebook to enter.  Happy holiday houseguesting Loves!

A few weeks ago Home Depot asked me to participate in their style challenge, “outdoor games.”  I had to create an outdoor game that celebrated summer and got people outdoors with friends and family.  You know a little less texting and social media scrolling, a little more put-the-phone-down-fun.  While I was all “yes  #letsdothis” the only problem was we live in the city which means we have a teeny-tiny backyard and most or our time spent outdoors is at one of the beautiful parks that grace our city streets.  So the answer?  Create an easily portable game, grab some friends, and plan a little picnic in the park.

I love to picnic.  And the recipe for a good picnic can really be boiled down to five essentials: a great blanket, the perfect basket, simple portable food that can withstand the heat, entertainment such as ladder toss, boccee, backgamon, etc., and portable tunes.  Mix with your nearest and dearest friends and you have a day that summers are made for.  Check out all of my picnicking essentials below and cruise on over to Home Depot’s blog for my step by step instructions to build your very own ladder toss.  TGIF Loves!  truly, MKR
