Is your dream job in the lifestyle industry? In the past five years, a blogging career has proven to not only be possible, but it can be very fulfilling. One-woman shows are now successful companies with teams of creative editors and contributors.
I first worked for two and a half years as a public relations professional before becoming an editor for Waiting on Martha. I’ll be honest with you: I put a lot of stress on myself about landing my job, and now, looking back, I would have done some of it differently. At the time, I didn’t understand the importance of being flexible and open-minded. It’s crucial to have a come-to-Jesus-talk with yourself about the definition of your “dream job” and what it all entails, while remaining open to the twists and turns it may give you along the way.
In the slideshow above, I’ve outlined six tips I have for someone interested in breaking into the lifestyle industry through a career with a blog or creative website. There is a plethora of helpful job hunting sites and it’s very helpful to read expert advice, but I always like to tell people to also be curious, stay persistent and be flexible. It’s a constantly evolving dream to chase after, and a lot of the path is new to pave, but it is so rewarding to find yourself in a role that both challenges you and excites you. Good luck! As the temps begin to drop, and Fall quickly approaches, I remember just how much I look forward to and cherish this time of year. The crisp Fall air, cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice everything…the warmth of this season is hard for anyone to ignore. And along with all of the warmth are flavors that truly embody Fall for me, and topping that list of course, is apple. Growing up, my mom made the best homemade apple crisp, and it only seems appropriate that I welcome my favorite season with a take on my favorite childhood treat.
While mom’s classic apple crisp never included pear, it’s always nice to switch things up and offer a different take on a classic. Enter pear. I’ve always loved pear’s hearty and dense texture and combined with my beloved apples and seven different spices, including cayenne and fresh vanilla bean, this crisp truly brings all the warmth that fall encompasses. And I mean, how precious is an apple crisp in an apple dish?!?!
Now I did mention this recipe is a healthy spiced pear and apple crisp. Instead of your typical flour-based and sugary topping I utilized the crunch of Nourish Snacks without the calories of a typical crisp. You may remember I’ve subbed out ingredients for Nourish’s gluten-free, non GMO, snacks before (our Super Simple Cocoa & Fruit Parfaits are a must-try!), and for this particular recipe the combination of Nourish’s Apple Cinn-sational and Berry’d Treasure completely compliment the crisp and provide that crunch I crave. And let us not forget, by taking the healthy topping route it allows us to splurge on the vanilla bean ice cream that every crisp really deserves. If you follow along on IG then you saw I recently returned from a wonderful segway-riding weekend in Raleigh, N.C., where HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams invited me and a few other bloggers to spend a little bit of time in the brand new, and gorgeous, HGTV Smart Home 2016. And by a little bit of time, I mean I pretended I was moving in that weekend.
Designed by fellow Chicagoan Tiffany Brooks, the HGTV Smart Home was a great testament not only for the power of all things tech, but also for the power of paint. The entire home incorporated a great mix of calming, traditional neutrals, but also bold, saturated rooms full of color from the HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Neutral Nuance Color Collection. As I toured the 3,300 square feet of this Southern smart home, I of course was drawn to all things blue and grey; the kitchen and dining room being great examples of how to mix and play off the two. But perhaps my favorite room of all? The nursery with its gender-neutral teal blue walls ( Riverway HGSW3302 and bright playful patterns.
Being chocked full of HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams color I knew the house would quickly remind me of my love for bold color and stoke those fires to redecorate for the umpteenth time, but I didn’t realize just how GENIUS the place would be too. It didn’t earn its name as a “Smart Home” for no reason, friends. High tech additions were designed to make modern life easier, from automated thermostats to integrated entertainment systems, self-watering plants, and doors that can be locked and lights that can be turned off with an app on your phone (!!!). If your mind is as blown as mind was, just go on and read a bit more behind the build.
And I’m sure this comes to no surprise to most of you, but it didn’t take me long in Raleigh to see that it’s a place where I could happily spend a lot more time. We had tons of great food, saw so many interesting sites and got a feel for an inspiring creative business scene that left me feeling energized and inspired. The HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams team organized a great itinerary for the group; we toured Videri Chocolate Factory and Raleigh Denim Workshop, where you could simply feel these creatives pour their heart and soul into their work. We also strolled through the North Carolina Museum of Art, which was beyond beautiful and somewhere I could easily spend days, and we even hopped on some Segways to see Oakwood Historic District (which was sooo fun and a great way to see the historic homes).
Experiencing lovely Raleigh and HGTV‘s brilliant and bold Smart Home with HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams was such a treat, and I’m even more adamant about the fact that paint (especially when we’re talking about the best of the best here) really does set the tone for your home. Truly, MKR
