Everyday Essential Oils, The Well Code

Have you noticed how the term “wellness” is pretty popular these days?  Every single thing we see and read seems to be about wellness.  Not health, but wellness.  And over the past year this trend has caused us to ask ourselves what “wellness” honestly looked like for us.  You may have noticed the results here on the blog…we’ve delved wellness topics like Ayurveda, all-natural beauty, seasonal eating, superfoods, smudge sticks and even healing crystals.  As a result, that research unearthed a surprisingly true passion for “wellness” and led us to a bigger question…how do we keep our wells full?

Here’s what we came up with.  Our well is full by focusing on what we put both on and in our bodies. It’s full through the mental and physical goals we strive towards, the relationships we cultivate, the careers we work for, and the daily routines we keep.

Sounds good right?  The problem was we knew a lot of you, like us, desired to live a cleaner, calmer, more “all natural solutioned” everyday life.  And you, like us wanted an authentic, yet attainable approach to holistic remedies without getting to “woo-woo.”  And you, like us, wanted a mind, body and soul approach to wellness, not an approach focused on a number on the scale. And, I guarantee you, like us couldn’t find this place.  That is until now.  Welcome to the beginning of our latest venture, The Well Code.

On The Well Code, you’ll find the focus is yes, essential oils.  But, this my friends is just the beginning.  You see our wellness journey really started with oils, so it’s only fitting that that’s where we begin.  It’s also fitting since oils are a huge part of both Kat and I’s daily routine, (don’t even get Kat started on Peppermint Oil).  But as I said, this is just the beginning.  We have plans to launch a complete wellness site early next year, but what that will look like is still taking shape.  So for now, we’ll be sharing everything The Well Code right here on the Blog and TWC’s social channels.

So what will we be sharing?  Don’t worry what you’ve come to love and expect on WOM will not change, I promise this will not become a wellness only site.  In fact, most of you won’t even notice a difference, just a little bit more content with a bit more focus in the wellness category.  Content like DIY’s, essential oil food and beauty recipes, essential oil remedies, cleaning and overall well-being. We’ll also be sharing relevant articles, tips and resources for the lifestyle we want to create.  A life where all of our wells are full.

And with that we are thrilled to welcome you all to The Well Code.  I hope you’ll check out TWC’s main page as well as our FAQ’s page.  The FAQ’s are especially helpful to any of you that are new to oils or are just beginning to dip your toe in the oils water.  And make sure to sign up for our email newsletter and  follow along on Instagram for our latest projects.

Lastly, to celebrate the exciting launch of The Well Code, we’re giving away* one Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit ($300 value, pictured and discussed in greater length HERE). In the spirit of Small Business Saturday we’re also offering free shipping* (up to $20) to all new members with the purchase of any premium starter kit, this includes the Thieves all natural cleaning kit.  The Thieves Kit is great for anyone who may not be into oils, but loves using all natural, chemical free cleaning products!

I guess all that’s left is to say is thank you for always supporting WOM and welcome to The Well Code.  We’re so thrilled to have you on this journey with us!  Truly, MKR & Kat

Christmas has definitely come early for me and my WOM family.  You see, a key was delivered earlier this week, a key that unlocks something I’ve been dreaming about since before I can remember.  A brick and mortar Shop.  That’s right Loves, this Holiday Season Waiting On Martha will transform a big (like really big) empty space at Shops Around Lenox, into an actual window-display-open-seven-days-a-week-how-can-I-help-you-Shop.

Like everything we seem to do the timeline is tight.  We have just a little over a week to make this all happen with doors swinging wide open to the public next Friday, November 21st at 10:00 am and we’ll stay open throghout the entire season, closing December 30th.  Along with all of the goodies you can always find in the WOM Shop we’ll also be bringing in local talent with sunglasses from Red’s Outfitters, aprons from Ice Milk Aprons, Jewelry by Avindy, Shoes & Accessories for the ever so stylish gentleman by Res Ipsa, and Ashley Woodson Bailey original prints and her new bag collaboration with Very Fine South.

Another dream coming to fruition will be the chance to spread the love with a little holiday workshop.  On November 22nd and 29thfrom 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, Lindsay Coletta and I will be teaching a holiday entertaining and flower arranging class.  I’ll be sharing different holiday place setting examples plus throughout the class you’ll be toasting and tasting different holiday cocktails, appetizers, and desserts leaving with all the recipes.  Lindsay will be talking all about seasonal arrangements from wreaths to garlands and you’ll work with her to create your very own to take home.  Added bonus, you’ll be able to purchase holiday blooms from Lindsay for future delivery and by taking the class you’ll be entitled to 15% off anything in The Shop that day.  Seating is limited to ten per class and I know there has been a lot of interest so make sure to grab a friend and sign up asap!

So who’s ready to get their jingle on?  Truly, MKR

P.S.  We’re looking to for some holiday elves to work the Shop and ship out orders so if you’re in Atlanta and hoping to spread some cheer please email your resume asap to waitingonmartha@gmail.com.  Also we need a visual artist to help create and install window installations next week…SCAD students can you hear me?  Email or comment below!

When Bahlsen North America reached out to ask if I’d help celebrate their 125th anniversary with a “Let the Good Times Roll” birthday cake contest I was all in.  I mean who doesn’t love cake?  Plus the only rules were I had to use Bahlsen’s signature rolled cookies (which I’ve had at least 100 times) and the recipe must be easy.  Enter my Dark Chocolate Ganache Cookie Cake.  A richer, than rich chocolate cake complete with mini chocolate chips, layers of Bahlsen cookies, butter cream frosting, and topped with a chocolate ganache frosting.  A recipe that is so, so very easy because you can choose to make it from scratch, or simply add ingredients to store bought cake mix and frosting (recipes and helpful baking tips for both below), plus the ganache topping makes it truly a showstopper.  And I promise you ganache is one of those things that looks impressive and extremely difficult to re-create but is beyond simple.

Now, lets break out your aprons and let the good times roll!  Happy Birthday Bahlsen!  truly, MKR

  13. 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  14. ...For the Butter Cream Frosting
  15. 1 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  16. 1 1/2 cup (3 sticks) unsalted butter softened
  17. 3 teaspoons clear vanilla extract
  18. 12 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (approximately 1 lb.)

Instructions
  1. ...For the Cake
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Grease 3 - 8 or 9 inch round cake pans.
  4. In medium bowl, pour boiling water over cocoa, and whisk until smooth. Let mixture cool.
  5. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; set aside.
  6. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at time, stir in vanilla.
  7. Add the flour mixture with the cocoa mixture. Spread batter evenly between the 3 prepared pans and sprinkle mini chocolate chips in each pan.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
  9. While cake bakes crumble your Bhalsen cookies and set aside.
  10. Allow to completely cool before leveling and frosting, you can even allow them to cool overnight.
  11. ...For the Butter Cream Frosting
  12. In large bowl, beat shortening and butter with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla.
  13. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.
  14. Gradually add milk; beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.
  15. ...For the Ganache Topping **begin making this once cake is chilling in the refrigerator**
  16. Cook the chocolate chips and heavy cream in the top of a double boiler over simmering water until smooth and warm, stirring occasionally.
  17. ...Build your Cake
  18. You can make the cake 2 or 3 layers, it's completely up to you.
  19. Level each cake using a cake leveler or large knife. Simply place your hand on top of the cake and cut the top, rounded layer off to make it flat and thinner.
  20. Place your first layer on a cake plate and frost the top with a thin layer of buttercream, add a layer of cookie crumble. Continue with the second, and third layer if desired. Do not add cookie crumble to the top layer.
  21. Once cake is assembled add remaining frosting to the top and begin frosting the entire cake until the entire top and sides are frosted.
  22. Place in refrigerator to chill for 20-30 minutes.
  23. Remove and pour ganache on the top of the cake allowing it to drip down the sides. Add remaining cookie crumble, serve immediately.
Notes
  1. *The easiest way to grease a cake pan is by using a napkin.
  2. *Using an actual cake leveler is the easiest and most accurate way to even out your cakes, however if you do not have a cake leveler simply use a bread knife.
  3. *When frosting a cake you want to make sure your frosting is a light and fluffy as possible. Begin with all of the frosting on top and then slowly move the frosting over the top of the cake, and down the sides. Using an icing spatula continue to frost the sides of the cake.
  4. *For the messy, lined icing look as seen on my cake simply take a think icing spatula and run it all around the cake lightly to form parallel lines. A cake turntable makes this extremely easy.
  5. *Instead of a double boiler I used a Candy/Chocolate Melting Pot to make the Ganache Topping
