Heirloom Gift Ideas: Past & Future Finds Worth Sharing

Six Thoughtful Ideas of Items to Collect & Give to Future Generations
Filed Under > Noted By

I’m turning into a sap in my old age.  Some of my most prized possessions right now have recently been handed down to me, and I cherish the stories behind them just as much as the item itself.  Luckily my mom is as sentimental as I am, and I have several special family heirlooms that I can hold onto and share with my future family someday.

Of course, heirloom items can be old AND new, and you can start collecting items today to share with future generations someday.  Many people immediately assume heirlooms are limited to fine jewelry.  But I think a piece worth handing down can be anything well-loved and tied to a special memory.  It can be a timeless piece of furniture like a cupboard with character, a signature wardrobe piece like an exquisite evening clutch or maybe a great set of luggage (this one is to-die-for….a girl can dream, right?!), or even a collection of love letters from long ago.  The possibilities are endless, and by taking the time to cherish and take care of something special now, you can have something meaningful to pass on later.

Click through the slideshow above to find up a few ideas for heirloom gift ideas.  I’d love to hear what you hold special from the past, and what you hope to share later down the road.  I think you’ll agree that the memories and life that these items symbolize are all worth celebrating!  Cheers, Kat

My mom has a beautiful pine jelly cupboard, passed down from my great aunt, that I hope to have someday. A great piece with good bones will transcend generations to come, and is a nice idea for an investment in the home.

Travel can open up a world of once-in-a-lifetime memories, and the souvenirs (big and small) collected on trips are great keepsakes. I recently found a handful of old matchboxes that my grandparents collected from hotels in Europe when they were younger, and they're so neat!

Lastly, jewelry makes the loveliest of heirloom gifts, and quality pieces can tie together generations of families. I have a beautiful opal ring, handed down to me on my eighteenth birthday by my mom, who also received it when she turned eighteen years old. The ring box may also be my favorite part; it's an aged, detailed navy blue box with crushed velvet...swoon!
